Primary Enrichment Outreach Programme Summer 2019
Years 3-6
Welcome I am delighted to introduce the University of Exeter’s Primary Enrichment Outreach Programme for Summer 2019. This prospectus outlines the exciting and comprehensive range of activities that we offer across Key Stage 2, from Years 3 to 6. Our Outreach Programme was first established in 2007 and in that time we have brought together the knowledge, expertise and experience of our tutors and lecturers to provide high quality teaching and learning experiences. Our programme aims to encourage and develop the progression, attainment and aspiration of school-age pupils and is specifically aimed at engaging pupils who demonstrate a particular interest, skill or potential in a specific subject area. Our hope is that pupils further their passion and understanding for their subject; feel inspired by practical, hands-on learning activities and meet like-minded peers, all within the context of a Higher Education setting. We look forward to welcoming you!
Our Pupils: We welcome Key Stage 2 children from all backgrounds, from state education to home schooling, and in particular those children who demonstrate a particular interest or aptitude for a subject. We are committed to supporting children from disadvantaged or under-represented groups, and are therefore pleased to offer free places to children from low income or Pupil Premium backgrounds. Please contact us to apply for a place.
Pupil safety: All members of the Primary Enrichment Outreach team hold an enhanced DBS certificate and all students participating in events are supervised by a member of our team. All activities held at the University of Exeter undergo a risk assessment before they take place, and we have fully trained first aiders on site.
How to book: Courses are £35 each, with free places available to those from low income or Pupil Premium backgrounds. To book a place please visit our website and follow the link to our online store: www.exeter.ac.uk/socialsciences/education/enrichment For individuals wishing to apply for a free place, or for schools wishing to make block bookings and pay by invoice, please contact us at enrichment@exeter.ac.uk before proceeding with payment.
School Absence: If attending this course means that your child will be missing school, please follow their absence procedures. Authorised absence can not be assumed.

Problem Solving - Please note
this is a repeat of a course that was run in Spring and is back by popular demand
Course description This workshop is designed for pupils to engage in a range of problem solving activities and in particular to develop their algebraic thinking. Pupils will solve specific problems and then explore ‘what if...?’ questions - leading towards generalising. Emphasis will be placed on developing pupils’ mathematical reasoning skills - moving from visual to more abstract problems. We will explore a range of problems that will require pupils to be systematic. Peer talk will be a key feature of the session as pupils explain their approaches to problems. The workshop is ideal for pupils who enjoy, and have an analytical approach to, problem solving. Part of the session will consider the basics of algebra using letters as unknowns and variables. The workshop is aimed at pupils who are able to use abstract thinking and who enjoy generating rules and problems for others to solve.

Mucky Materials
Course description For the pupils: If you like messy or challenging hands on experiments, including working with chemicals, then this course is for you. During the day we will try to decide what a ‘material’ is and explore what different materials can do; but can we make sense of what we discover? For the grown-ups: The National Curriculum states that ‘The principal focus of science teaching in lower key stage 2 is to enable pupils to broaden their scientific view of the world around them. They should do this through exploring, talking about, testing and developing ideas about everyday phenomena…..’ This year 3/4 course is designed to take students beyond the National Curriculum for their age group, giving them an opportunity to explore some materials from a chemistry-based perspective, although other aspects of science will be included. The course will be messy, so rough clothes and sensible, closed footwear (not open sandals) to be worn please.

Volcanoes
Course description This exciting course is all about volcanoes! How is it that there are volcanoes in the world? What are volcanoes? Are all volcanoes the same? Why is it that some parts of the world have volcanoes and others don’t? We will explore these questions and through laboratory demonstrations and hands on experiments discover why some volcanoes explode so spectacularly. In the afternoon you will make a volcano, using the knowledge you gained from your earlier experiments. Children will learn about basic anatomy of the earth, tectonic plates and how this leads to the development of volcanoes. Students will run experiments and watch demonstrations of controlled explosions and use this learning to make a volcano of their own in the afternoon.

Course description A really fun days’ workshop developing all the basic skills of cricket through playing the different games of Kwik Cricket, adapted to suit the skills and number of players available. Kwik cricket can be enjoyed by all children including those who don’t understand the rules of cricket beyond hitting a ball with a bat and shouting howzat! Kwik cricket is played with lightweight plastic equipment and a lightweight ball so no protective clothing is necessary. Kwik cricket can be made more difficult, or easier, by changing the pitch dimensions, such as increasing the distance between the wickets or pushing out or pulling in the boundaries. We will be playing many Kwik cricket games, including Pairs Kwik cricket, the Lords Game and Continuous Kwik cricket.

Frequently Asked Questions How many courses can I do? As many as you want. If you are applying for free places, your child can do two courses each term. How do I book a free place? Email us at enrichment@exeter.ac.uk and we will send you a code to use with your booking. You will need to provide evidence, such as an email from your school confirming that your child is eligible for Pupil Premium or your NHS exemption letter. Can my child miss school? You need to follow your school’s absence procedures. How do I find out about your new courses? Email us at enrichment@exeter.ac.uk and we will add you to our mailing list. We will send you our course brochure three times per year. How long are the courses? The courses last a whole day. We ask you to drop your children off at 9.15am and collect them at 3.30pm. They need to bring a packed lunch. We try to get them outside to play for a morning break and at lunchtime. My child is in Y2 but very able. Can they come? The courses are designed to stretch the most able children and so can be quite challenging. We don’t allow Year 2 children on our Year 3 & 4 courses so that Year 4 children still have a great experience. Your child will be very welcome next year. When should I book to avoid disappointment? We close the bookings 48 hours before the course starts. This gives the tutor time to prepare for the actual number of children who are coming and tailor the course to suit them. 19
