Primary Enrichment Outreach Programme Summer 2018
Years 3-6
Welcome I am delighted to introduce the University of Exeter’s Primary Enrichment Outreach Programme for Summer 2018. This prospectus outlines the exciting and comprehensive range of activities that we offer across Key Stage 2, from Years 3 to 6. Our Outreach Programme was first established in 2007 and in that time we have brought together the knowledge, expertise and experience of our tutors and lecturers to provide high quality teaching and learning experiences. Our programme aims to encourage and develop the progression, attainment and aspiration of school-age pupils and is specifically aimed at engaging pupils who demonstrate a particular interest, skill or potential in a specific subject area. Our hope is that pupils further their passion and understanding for their subject; feel inspired by practical, hands-on learning activities and meet like-minded peers, all within the context of a Higher Education setting. We look forward to welcoming you!
Our Pupils: We welcome Key Stage 2 children from all backgrounds, from state education to home schooling, and in particular those children who demonstrate a particular interest or aptitude for a subject. We are committed to supporting children from disadvantaged or under-represented groups, and are therefore pleased to offer free places to children from low income or Pupil Premium backgrounds. Please contact us to apply for a place.
Pupil safety: All members of the Primary Enrichment Outreach team hold an enhanced DBS certificate as do all of our student ambassadors who work at our events. All students participating in events are supervised by a member of our team. All activities held at The University of Exeter undergo a risk assessment before they take place, and we have fully trained first aiders on site.
How to book: Courses are £35 each, with free places available to those from low income or Pupil Premium backgrounds. To book a place, please visit our website and follow the link to our online store: www.exeter.ac.uk/socialsciences/education/

Course Title All Our Languages! A creative writing course for children who love stories and speak more than one language.
Course description Are you a language superhero? Do you know how to speak more than one language (even just a little bit of more than one language?) Do you speak a different language at home? Do you love reading, telling and writing stories? Then this course is for you!
Contact us E: enrichment@exeter.ac.uk Tel: 01392 724816
During this course we will use all of our languages to discover stories from different cultures. Together, we will use pictures, story maps and apps on the iPads to help us communicate in more than one language. Through games and activities outside (weather permitting!) we will play with the magic of words in English and our home languages. By the end of the afternoon we will create, perform and write our own multilingual stories and poems. This is a new course for children who speak more than one language, you don’t need to be fluent in a language other than English, or fluent in English to join us. Don’t worry if you are shy about using your home language – the group for this course will be small and there will be lots of multilingual adults on hand. Research tells us that confidence in using your home language helps you to acquire English quickly and efficiently. The quicker you progress in your home language, the quicker your English will improve. Bilingualism (or trilingualism!) is an amazing achievement and advantage so come along and spend the day working and having fun with other language superheroes!

Humanities and Thinking Skills: Food Glorious Food!
Course description This interactive and exciting course will help children develop their geography and thinking skills. During the morning we will be using infographics and videos to find out about food production around the world. We will think about where our food comes from and how it travels to our tables. During the afternoon, children will work in teams in a "real world" food simulation game, they will take on the roles of producers, farmers, wholesalers, retailers and customers. This will provide them with first-hand experience of the challenges of food production and lead to deep thinking about possible solutions. During the day we will use our mathematics skills, teamwork, our powers of persuasion and think about basic economics. This geography and thinking skills course is for children who love to discuss, debate and think about Big Real World questions.
