If you’re creative and you’d like to explore how your ideas could have real impact in the world, our Product Design BA/BSc(Hons) course gives you the chance to develop the skills to become an enterprising professional designer. So much goes into a finished product. The initial sketch, physical model making, prototyping, digital visualisation and animation. We’ll give you the chance to explore every element so you get to develop a range of design skills and competencies. While you’re working on the practical side, we’ll also encourage you to think about how to research a product, and what goes into product development and manufacturing. You’ll acquire listening skills to identify gaps in the market, people’s frustrations with everyday tasks and existing products and develop ideas to solve them. We believe design can improve people’s lives, aiding an individual or community’s wellbeing. Whether you’re designing solutions physically
or digitally, in sketch form or 3D, we’ll focus on end results that are capable of being mass-produced. Both the BA(Hons) and the BSc(Hons) routes of the course have the same programme for the first year. After that you’ll be able to choose which way to go in the second year, and our staff are on hand to help you make your decision. The BA(Hons) route is designed to help you gain the experience needed to work in large companies, where you’ll be working alongside technical staff and engineers and using your creative, visual and artistic skills to help develop products. The BSc(Hons) option aims to give you a wider skill set, including research, design and development skills in material and manufacturing technologies. It could help you go on to work in a small or medium sized business, where your role would cover a wide range of activities. 1

My student journey so far
Abigail Weegram
Interior Design BA(Hons)
“Going to New York with the University was a really memorable event,” says Abigail, Interior Design student. “It snowed for the full five days that we were there and it was up to our knees!”
“The first few weeks of University were so much fun. I moved into the student accommodation at Storthes Hall, made a lot of new friends, and enjoyed the Freshers’ Festival.
Abigail grew up in the coastal town of Hartlepool. “It’s a small town and pretty much everyone knows each other. Moving to Huddersfield was quite a big change as I was moving to a place where I knew nobody.
“When I was younger, I wanted to be a teacher.” So why did Abigail choose to study interior design? “I chose my course as I always preferred the art and design subjects at school. I once did work experience for an interior design company, and from then on I knew it was definitely the job for me.
I love being in the studio; I feel inspired by everything and everyone around me.
Abigail undertook a work placement with FITCH, London. She says of the experience, “I worked on live projects alongside both 2D and 3D designers. I learnt so much and improved all of my skills, learnt new programmes and also new styles and techniques. Overall, my experience at FITCH was amazing. I loved every minute of it.”

Meet our staff
Hear how Richard got into photography
Richard Mulhearn Course Leader and Admissions Tutor, Photography “My career in photography is something that built gradually,” says Richard. “I used to go to a small cinema where I saw a lot of European and World films. The images I encountered made a lasting impression, especially the narrative and sequencing. Having a 35mm SLR camera was all you needed to begin making images and constructing sequences with photography. It started from there.”
I worked for the best part of ten years making images for album artwork for music labels and magazines. During his degree Richard met a number of creative practitioners, designers and musicians, and spent time collaborating with them to influence his work. This continued when he began working as a freelance photographer, firstly in the music and then in the film industry.
18
“I worked for the best part of ten years making images for album artwork for a number of music labels and magazines,” he explains. “I remain proud of the work I was a part of, there’s a real sense of possibility and excitement bound up in those projects.” Whilst freelancing, Richard was asked to do some teaching on an Art Foundation Diploma course. “I really enjoyed being a part of a student’s development; encouraging, supporting and challenging them towards creative practice,” he says. What does Richard enjoy most about Huddersfield? “Here on the course we have a very high standard and level of investment in facilities, equipment and technical support, which alongside a good range of staff experience and expertise, means that our students can achieve high technical, creative and professional standards, thus gain the skills and confidence they need to move forward.”

We hope you’ve found all the information you need to inspire you to become a student here at Huddersfield. Now all you need to do is apply.
Apply to us UCAS If this is your first (undergraduate) degree and you want to study a full-time course, then you’ll apply via UCAS at ucas.com If you’re at a college or school right now, it’s probably already registered with UCAS. The best thing to do is ask your teacher or careers adviser to help with your application. Once you’ve applied we’ll keep in touch with you throughout the application process, so you’re up to speed with what’s going on. When to apply If you want to start your course in September 2018, you can apply to UCAS any time from 1 September 2017 onwards. Make sure UCAS receives your application by 15 January 2018.
Our course codes You have to enter the code for the course you want to study on your application form. You can find our course codes on each of the course pages in this brochure, or on the UCAS website. By the way, the institution code for Huddersfield is HUDDS H60. Interviews and portfolios For some of our courses, you may be asked to attend an interview and bring along a portfolio. A portfolio should demonstrate your existing design skills, creativity and capabilities in relation to your current course of study and specific course application. If we invite you to an interview, we’ll let you know what we expect you to bring with you.
