We’ll give you the chance to come at your subject from just about every angle. Genetics, cell biology, biochemistry. You’ll be able to find out about cloning, sequencing and modifying genes. So if you fancy yourself as a DNA fingerprinter or a cuttingedge research scientist, you’ll get to experiment with some of the most exciting 21st Century scientific disciplines and equipment.
Our staff have expertise in academia from a wide range of disciplines within biological sciences. Across the department there’s a strong interdisciplinary focus, with staff working across different areas. Depending on what you study, you may be able to interact with students from other sciences to spark ideas and further your thinking. In your second and final years you’ll also be able to use Labster, innovative technology that gets you involved in interactive lab simulations via gamification.

We give you the chance to focus on real life applications, finding molecular and cellular explanations for processes that help with medical diagnosis, treatments and cures. Biological Sciences is a fascinating subject area and it’s related to our everyday existence. It studies life and living organisms including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution and taxonomy. From the growth and division of simple bacteria through to the evolution, development, growth and adaptation of complex multi-cellular organisms, and the emerging role of genomics in personalised medicine and biodiversity in a changing world. On our Biological Sciences degree, you’ll have the opportunity to study core topics and consider contemporary issues in all major aspects of biology. Optional choices in each year of your course provide you with opportunities to specialise further in core areas of molecular cell biology, organismal biology, and ecology and environmental biology. Or alternatively, you can vary your choice of optional modules to keep your coverage of the biological sciences broad.

The search for new ways to diagnose and treat diseases is one of the most challenging and exciting areas of science. On our Medical Biology BSc(Hons) degree course, you’ll have the chance to explore cellular biology and molecular genetics and lay down the foundations for a fulfilling career in medical research, the pharmaceutical industry or other healthcare specialism. On this course, you’ll be looking at all aspects of pharmacology including neurodegenerative diseases and other conditions affecting ageing populations, as well as infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV-AIDS. You’ll also have the chance to study topics around public health and increase your understanding of emerging pathogens and those that are becoming resistant to antibiotics. In short, you could come away from the course with a wide knowledge and the practical skills to kick-start a fulfilling career. Studying for your Pharmacology BSc(Hons) degree with us, you’ll be guided by doctoral-level teaching staff on a modular course designed to help you follow your interests and
tailor your degree to suit your career aspirations. Alongside building your technical and scientific knowledge, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your deductive, analytical and communication skills – all vital when you venture out into the real world. On top of that, there’s the chance to gain hands-on experience in our modern biological sciences labs using the kind of instrumentation you’ll find in industry. “When I was younger my biology teacher got me interested in genetics. From then I knew I wanted to pursue genetics at university. I’m from Finland and have lived and worked in the UK for 15 years. Prior to my role here at Huddersfield, as Senior Lecturer in Molecular Biochemistry, I was a Research Fellow at the University of Liverpool. My PhD was a cell biology project in neural development.
“I grew up in South Yorkshire and took A Levels in all the sciences; physics, biology, chemistry and maths. I decided I loved chemistry and biology as I understood them better than physics. I found that these subjects had a lot of crossover and these were the areas that I was interested in, especially DNA and protein synthesis – the process from genes in DNA to a functional protein.
I’ve been interested in genetics from a young age. Now I find it really rewarding when I see my students understand and enjoy the topic themselves.
The staff are really great at Huddersfield. They’re dedicated, care about the students and always try to help.
“I now teach and research molecular genetics. I study mutations found in human patients that cause disease. I use a nematode worm as a model to study and understand the genetic basis of human diseases, specifically developmental, metabolic and neuro-endocrine disorders, in order to better understand the basis of disease and ultimately find cures. I use my research, and the research of others within my field, in my final year classes to enhance the learning of my students. “Science is really fascinating and when I see my students starting to understand and enjoy the topics themselves, I find this extremely rewarding.”
“I chose to study the Biochemistry with a Research Placement BSc(Hons) course here at Huddersfield as there is a good combination of biology and chemistry, plus the career options to go into later are wide and varied. “My most memorable event so far has definitely been my placement year at The Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine. I was part of a team looking at the blood clotting factor XIII. I worked on my own pilot project on coated platelet activation. I found that factor XIII wasn’t needed in the bonding of proteins to the coated platelet surface. This was really rewarding as my work has contributed to the knowledge about how blood clots. “My placement year has helped me to decide to go into cancer research. Whilst on placement, I managed to get a lab tour of the facilities at St James’s University Hospital and all the different types of cancer research they were doing. Now my dissertation project is on bladder cancer and after my degree I’m interested in doing a PhD in the field of cancer and then becoming a Lecturer at university.”
