Jamie Wordsworth Chemical Engineering BEng(Hons)
“I’ve always had a keen interest in science and my A Levels were in biology, chemistry and maths. At college I found out about chemical engineering through a visiting lecturer from the University of Huddersfield. I then based my extended project qualification on chemical engineering and worked with a Lecturer from the University on this. “I chose to study the Chemical Engineering BEng(Hons) course as it’s the perfect combination of chemistry and maths for me.
I’m a student ambassador for my subject area, so I help out at events such as Open Days, where I conduct tours of the facilities and demonstrations for students and parents who are visiting the uni.
“Plus, the career prospects are really flexible. At Huddersfield there’s also a focus on chemistry, so this keeps my options open and also helps to prepare me to speak to Chemists as part of my chemical engineering role. “I’m in the second year of my course, and my most memorable event so far has been a two week shadowing placement in my first year at a local chemical engineering company as a Process Engineer’s Assistant. I helped with calculations and also on a project to adapt and improve a current process. It was good to see the applications of what I’d studied in the first year of my degree in the context of the real world. I’m now hoping to get a placement in industry for the third year of my course. Once I graduate I’d like to do a Master’s degree here at Huddersfield in Chemical Engineering. “There’s a great balance of study and social life here and I’ve met lots of people and friends, especially at the Freshers events.”

Chemistry is relevant to many aspects of everyday life
Dr Lindsay Harding Senior Lecturer in Analytical Chemistry
“I’ve always been interested in how things work, which is why I’m a scientist. I became interested in my field of study at school as chemistry was my favourite subject at GCSE and A Level. Also chemistry is relevant to many aspects of everyday life. “I grew up in Berkshire and studied at the University of Kent at Canterbury for my undergraduate degree in Chemistry with Environmental Science BSc(Hons). After a period
I love keeping myself and my students up to date with the latest developments in analytical chemistry through my research and teaching.

of working I came to Huddersfield to study for my PhD, and in 2007 I became a Lecturer here. Before my PhD I had a job as an Analytical Chemist and I saw how the theory I’d learnt could be used in practice in a career. “My most memorable event here at Huddersfield was seeing my first students graduate. I felt immense pride at seeing the results of all their hard work and achievements. “What I enjoy the most about teaching my subject is relating to the students, explaining things to them and seeing that ‘penny drop’ moment. I love keeping myself and my students up to date with the latest developments in analytical chemistry through my research and teaching. I feel this can also help to contribute to their employability and future career prospects.”
