Our economics courses give you the chance to understand how economics underpins all of our everyday decisions and determines the health of the economy. The levels of interest rates, unemployment and inflation have direct consequences for all of us. We’ll look at macroeconomics, studying the effects of income, inflation, exchange rates and consumption on our daily lives. And we’ll look at microeconomics too, studying practices that happen in particular sectors, such as competition, regulation and intervention. Throughout our teaching there is an emphasis on the applicability and relevance of the economic theories that we discuss so you’ll be able to apply your economics knowledge in your career – this is a skill that employers are increasingly demanding. Studying an economics degree involves understanding increasingly complicated economic theories, often depicted diagrammatically or mathematically, as well as grasping statistical,

economic models. What makes these theories and models relevant for you is a realisation of their significance in the real world, and how, whilst at University and when you have graduated, you can use the tools of economic analysis to calculate anything from how many hours to study or the impact of rising interest rates. Studying for an economics degree gives you an in-depth knowledge of a subject that has been demonstrated to be valued by employers in terms of levels of graduate salaries. An economics degree also offers so many varied opportunities for careers for example in banking and finance, economics and management consultancy, government, work in developing countries, journalism and accountancy to name just a few. At Huddersfield we pride ourselves on the quality of our support and provision for students and appreciate that every student is unique.

*Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching.

Macroeconomics gives you the chance to explore how high level factors such as incomes, inflation and consumption affect each other. Microeconomics looks at how individual businesses and even households behave, and how to develop models to analyse them in even greater detail. Quantitative Economics is about developing a range of tools to analyse the statistics and the mathematics behind the theory.

During the course you’ll be able to choose option modules to explore what excites you about the business world. The modules could help you decide which areas to specialise in and what career choices to make.

Key information: UCAS code: L100 Duration: 3 years full-time 4 years inc. placement year

We don’t expect you to be fully versed in business or economics before your course begins, as we aim to build up your understanding from first principles. We’ll also be looking at how mathematic tools can be used to analyse economic decisions. So any mathematics is very much applied rather than pure.

Money makes the world go round. And Economics helps you understand how it all works. It’s a fascinating subject that takes a wide variety of factors into account, and it could lead to an exciting career in all manner of industries too, in the private or public sector. Economics is the science of decision making. It’s vital in situations where events like changes in the price level of goods or services, or changes in interest rates affect how decisions are made. That’s why economists study how people, households, firms and governments allocate scarce resources to meet the needs of the population. By studying Economics, you’ll have the chance to understand global problems such as widespread poverty and inequality, high unemployment and rising pollution. You might also be able to tease out some of the solutions too.

You should come away from the course being able to understand and respond to situations in the business world, using a framework that you’ve established during your study of economics.

Catherine Wall, Economics BSc(Hons), placement with Department of Education, in Sheffield “I’ve always been torn between studying a logical subject or something more creative. In the end I opted for economics which has mathematical components but also creative elements with the application and the theory. I enjoy learning about how the world works, and understanding theoretical models, economics is so relevant to everyday life, most relevant issues and real world problems have an economic element – and it’s great being able to understand the depth behind that.”

My student journey so far

Fahmida Nisa Economics BSc(Hons)

“I grew up in the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka. Moving away from home was a tough decision, but despite the big cultural difference, Huddersfield feels like home now. “I love how basic economic policies can make the world go round and how they’ve narrowed the gap between nations. “The Economics course at Huddersfield stood out to me because it had so many module options that I could mould the course into what suited me best.

I thought university would only be about studying. That’s definitely not the case!

“I have many great memories from my first year: becoming President of the Bangladeshi Student Society, participating in a charity fashion show, making friends who’ll last a lifetime. The most significant one has to be the happiness on my parents’ faces when I made the Dean’s list for meritorious performance. “I thought university would only be about studying and that I’d end up living in the library. That’s definitely not the case! Even after going to lectures and revising, I have plenty of time to socialise and work part-time. “For now I want to concentrate on my studies and building up my CV by securing a placement. After graduation, I’d like get some work experience before coming back for a Master’s, possibly even a PhD!”

Meet our staff

The subject is continually changing and reinventing itself

Robert O’Neill Senior Lecturer, Economics “When I was younger I studied to become a chartered accountant. However my interest in financial econometrics peaked when I worked in the financial services sector after leaving University. “I am originally from Heywood in Greater Manchester and came to work at the University in 2013. At the time I was working at the Office for National Statistics in the area of Index Numbers.

My biggest achievement to date has been advising the National Statistician.

“What I enjoy most about teaching is that the subject is continually changing and reinventing itself to reflect the concerns of the real world. It isn’t possible for us to detach our teaching from what is going on in the real world and I also enjoy the challenge of answering student’s questions, often they have different and intriguing ways of looking at things. “My most memorable event at the University of Huddersfield was my first lecture with my new class. I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was very enjoyable finally to meet my students. “My biggest achievement to date was advising the National Statistician as part of a consultation on the future of the RPI (Retail Prices Index).”
