So much goes into a successful costume. You’ll need an understanding of the textiles you’re using, an ability to analyse text, music and character to design something appropriate. And a mastery of technique to construct the finished article. Costume with Textiles BA(Hons) gives you the chance to build the skills you need. On the course we’ll look at different textiles and construction techniques to give you the chance to develop a thorough grounding in materials and design. We’ll also work through the key skills that costume designers and makers use, including research, critical reflection, design development, illustration, textile experimentation and costume construction. We’ll encourage you to take risks, to question and challenge your work and form an individual style. We look at the practical side of things, including embroidery and print as used in costume. Our costumes and textiles studios are home to a range of technology to help you bring your ideas to life, including computer aided design (CAD) embroidery, screen printing, printmaking, laser cutting, digital ink-jet fabric printing and pattern cutting equipment.
If you have the vision, we’ll try to make it happen. So if you want to mix up historical and contemporary styles, we’ll look at cut and construction techniques from a range of eras to get you thinking. We’ll also give you the chance to get out and about, with inspiring field trips to costume exhibitions, shows and galleries. The trips you are offered will depend on what’s currently available. Study visits are embedded within the course, and will be funded by the University. It’s all designed to inspire your creations and get you thinking. In your third year, you can also take optional placements out in the world of costume to gain hands-on, industry experience. At the end of the course you will have had the opportunity to design and make costumes for a wide range of performances, including theatre, opera, dance, film and television.

My student journey so far
Zarina Kavazova
Fashion Design with Marketing and Production BA(Hons) Zarina’s interest in fashion started as a child. “I used to put on fashion shows for my dolls made entirely from paper,” she recalls. “I grew up in a beautiful city in Bulgaria called Plovdiv, the 6th oldest city in Europe. But I wanted to study fashion in the UK. “I love how my course works; from the initial idea to how to sell your creations. And I love the support our tutors give us. It’s encouraging, especially when, like me, you are 4000km away from home.”
When you come to study fashion, you think you will make clothes all day long, but fashion is so much more.
During her course Zarina had the opportunity to spend a year’s placement as a Studio Assistant with The Left Bank, Huddersfield. She sums up the experience as ‘awesome.’ “I came away a completely different student. I surprised myself with my pattern making skills. And I met amazing artists. Huddersfield has its own art community and it’s so inspiring to work with all those talented people.” Zarina also loved working on her Major Project, a menswear brand called UNREST. “It’s inspired by riots and vandalism,” she explains. “Because I’m good at painting, I will paint on my clothes making them a wearable piece of art. I’m planning to work with dancers instead of models and make a video. It’s so much work, but I can’t wait to see the end result.”

Nicola Perren
Senior Lecturer and Admissions Tutor, Textile Practice “This is a subject that you have to be passionate about. You have to put your all into it,” explains Nicola Perren, Senior Lecturer. “My students are inspiring. I get excited by the weird and wonderful things they come up with. I’m particularly inspired by students who overcome challenges and hardships. It’s not always about what they achieve academically, but I feel very proud of the journey they’ve been on.”
My students are inspiring. I feel very proud of the journey they’ve been on.

With parents in the armed forces, Nicola had an interesting childhood. “Until I came to Huddersfield, I’d moved every two years,” she recalls. “And when I was younger I wanted to be a spy photographer in the army! I was interested in the arts and I was quite sporty, so in my mind it was a way of combining the two.” Nicola’s interest in the arts led her to study textile design at the University, before returning as a Lecturer, and she’s had some memorable moments. “When Sir Patrick Stewart became Chancellor of the University, I taught him how to use a loom! He came for a couple of hours and did some weaving. His mum used to work in the mills, so he felt quite at home.”

We hope you’ve found all the information you need to inspire you to become a student here at Huddersfield. Now all you need to do is apply.
Apply to us UCAS If this is your first (undergraduate) degree and you want to study a full-time course, then you’ll apply via UCAS at ucas.com If you’re at a college or school right now, it’s probably already registered with UCAS. The best thing to do is ask your teacher or careers adviser to help with your application. Once you’ve applied we’ll keep in touch with you throughout the application process, so you’re up to speed with what’s going on. When to apply If you want to start your course in September 2018, you can apply to UCAS any time from 1 September 2017 onwards. Make sure UCAS receives your application by 15 January 2018.
Our course codes You have to enter the code for the course you want to study on your application form. You can find our course codes on each of the course pages in this brochure, or on the UCAS website. By the way, the institution code for Huddersfield is HUDDS H60. Interviews and portfolios For some of our courses, you may be asked to attend an interview and bring along a portfolio. A portfolio should demonstrate your existing design skills, creativity and capabilities in relation to your current course of study and specific course application. If we invite you to an interview, we’ll let you know what we expect you to bring with you.
