My student journey so far

Aaron Buckland

Operating Department Practice BSc(Hons)

“I grew up in an ex-mining village in South Yorkshire, where I was always surrounded by my family”, explains Aaron Buckland, Operating Department Practice BSc(Hons) student. Aaron originally wanted a career in Information Technology, however he changed his mind in the final year of college. “I decided I didn’t want to work in isolation, as I wanted to use people skills and apply my communication skills to my profession. Initially, I considered the more well known healthcare related courses such as paramedic science, nursing and podiatry. Whilst doing so the University contacted me and asked whether I had considered Operating Department Practice (ODP), which at the time I wasn’t aware of. However, after some research I thought the course would be better fitting to my desires.”

Aaron, who chose to study the course at Huddersfield due to the placement connections, comments “the career excites me and I am able to support patients at the most vulnerable periods in their hospital treatment. I believe that ODP is the healthcare secret gem, as it’s still not a widely known profession. “In the future Aaron would like to pursue his interest in research and ODP through undertaking a PhD. “I have found something I am really interested in and grown a passion for.”

Neil Simmonite Head of the Division of Podiatry and Clinical Sciences

“I wanted to play sport for my country or be a lead guitarist in a band!” says Neil, recalling his childhood dreams. Neil who is originally from Somerset, first became interested in Podiatry after he returned home from University having graduated in Biology. “My mother worked in the hospital in Taunton and came back one day saying they couldn’t get a Podiatrist. I asked what that was, to which she

replied, specialists, who were in short supply. It seemed a logical step forward from Biology so I did some research and was inspired to pursue this avenue, where I could be involved in healthcare and make a real difference.” Neil then graduated from Podiatric Medicine in 1988 and has since gained experience working within the NHS, private sector and education. He has taken on practitioner, teaching and management roles and joined the University in 2014, to help raise the profile of podiatry.” It still amazes me how many people don’t know what podiatrists do,” comments Neil. “I have always felt privileged to be involved in helping inspire and shape the next generation of clinicians, educators, managers and leaders across the health professions. Meeting up with past graduates at events and hearing about their career progression is a very rewarding and pleasurable experience.”
