Perhaps you’d like to defend someone against a miscarriage of justice. Or go on to work as a legal adviser in an international corporation.

Study with us Huddersfield was one of the best universities for the course I wanted to study as it offers the incorporated Master’s degree and I won’t have to do a separate LPC. Megan Bedford, Law (Exempting) Master of Law and Practice (MLP), incorporating LLB(Hons)

Check this out! Networking Our pioneering Partners in Law scheme provides you with networking, mentoring and training opportunities via regional and internationally renowned legal firms.

A law qualification can lead to so many different career paths. Each one is different, exciting and rewarding in its own way. The Law LLB(Hons) and Master of Law and Practice (MLP) degrees from Huddersfield are designed to help you decide which way to go next and take your first steps in your career. Our courses aim to provide you with a good grounding in core legal concepts alongside an understanding of developments in the English and European legal system. As your knowledge develops, your interest in specific areas of law may too, which is why you’ll have the opportunity to choose specialist options in your second and third years. If you’re looking to establish a career in law we’ll give you the chance to gain as much experience as you need to stand out from your peers. For example, our Partners in Law scheme is a pioneering initiative that links you up with law firms in the region and further afield.**

100% The UK’s only University where all our permanent teaching staff are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy*

You might also have the chance to be part of our Legal Advice Clinic, where you work closely with practising solicitors and help them with real cases.*** The Clinic is located in the centre of Huddersfield and serves the local community, where you’ll be able to give real people legal advice to help them in their daily lives. You can’t beat hands-on experience like this to develop your skills and give you a feel for law in practice. Many of our tutors are qualified solicitors and have worked in senior legal positions; all of them focusing on the end goal of getting you into rewarding employment. In the past, graduates have gone on to work as barristers and solicitors, some reaching the top legal positions in the country, for example Queen’s Council (QC), and others have chosen to take up careers in personnel, industrial relations, finance, banking and business management.

*Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching.

Guest speaker, Michael Mansfield QC, is best known for participating in some of Britain’s most prominent and controversial court cases

**Some of the firms currently involved in the partnership include Pinsent Masons, DLA Piper, Eversheds, Ridley and Hall Solicitors, Ramsdens Solicitors and Eaton Smith. *** Available from Year 2 and subject to successfully completing a competency assessment.

Law (Exempting) Master of Law and Practice (MLP), incorporating LLB(Hons) The Master of Law and Practice (MLP) is an exciting Master’s degree that provides a clear route to professional qualification. The degree gives you an exemption from the Legal Practice Course (LPC), which is the second vocational stage of training you need to qualify as a solicitor, so it could see you well on your way to your chosen profession. The four-year Master of Law and Practice (MLP) course helps you meet all the academic requirements before going on to start your legal training, so once you graduate successfully, you can move on to train directly with a legal firm. By studying law in this way, you’ll be able to access tuition fee loans and other financial support, so you won’t have to fund a separate LPC course on top of your LLB(Hons). That could

save you quite a sum, and make all the difference when you’re trying to get established in your legal career. We keep things flexible. After your second year if you decide you’d rather do the three-year LLB(Hons) then that’s fine. Pass your LLB(Hons) and you’ll have a law degree that qualifies you to go on to train as a solicitor or barrister. To do that, you’ll have to complete a separate professional practice course, as well as a training contract or pupillage.

My student journey so far

Megan Bedford

Law (Exempting) Master of Law and Practice (MLP), incorporating LLB(Hons)

“I grew up in Leeds and I wanted the opportunity to move away from home and live by myself. “The transition from being at home to becoming independent was much easier than I thought. I really enjoyed living at Storthes Hall in my first year. It was what you’d expect from your time at uni and more. I had such a great time going to student events and living in a student village. I met some of my best friends here and I expect them to be friends for life.

I’ve learned so much during my time here and I was surprised at how much support I was given.

“From a young age I’d always thought about having a career in law. I went on to study law at A level. I really enjoyed it and it made me certain that it’s what I want to do. “Huddersfield was one of the best universities for the course I wanted to study as it offers the Master’s in Law practice degree and I won’t have to do a separate LPC. I’ve learned so much during my time here and I was surprised at how much support I was given. “After I graduate, I hope to gain a training contract as a conveyancer and build my career as a solicitor.”

Meet our staff

Open door policy for students

Katy Ferris Lecturer, Law “When I was younger I wanted to be a teacher, later on I became fascinated by issues of justice. I grew up in Scunthorpe. My father was a welder and my mum a book keeper, they instilled in me a great work ethic. “I wanted to work here because of the strong links between the Business School and the local community, the award winning Law Clinic and the open door policy for students. This means we get to know the students as individuals and on graduation day I am every bit as proud as their families of their achievement. “I became interested in teaching law as a way of sharing my enthusiasm for learning. I’ve since published widely on issues of justice in a number of publications and journals.

“My most memorable event at the University of Huddersfield was meeting Michael Mansfield QC when he gave a social justice lecture.

Engaging minds, debating the law and legal principles. “I love teaching law as I get to interact with young and engaging minds, debating the law and legal principles. ”My biggest achievement to date has been seeing my textbooks published.”
