The Law LLB(Hons) and Master of Law and Practice (MLP) degrees from Huddersfield are designed to help you decide which way to go next and take your first steps in your career. Our courses aim to provide you with a good grounding in core legal concepts alongside an understanding of developments in the English and European legal system. As your knowledge develops, your interest in specific areas of law may too, which is why you’ll have the opportunity to choose specialist options in your second and third years. If you’re looking to establish a career in law we’ll give you the chance to gain as much experience as you need to stand out from your peers. You might also have the chance to be part of our Legal Advice Clinic, where you work closely with practising solicitors and help them with real cases.*** The Clinic is located in the centre of Huddersfield and serves the local community, where you’ll be able to give real people legal advice to help them in their daily lives. You can’t beat hands-on experience like this to develop your skills and give you a feel for law in practice. Many of our tutors are qualified solicitors and have worked in senior legal positions; all of them focusing on the end goal of getting you into rewarding employment. In the past, graduates have gone on to work as barristers and solicitors, some reaching the top legal positions in the country, for example Queen’s Council (QC), and others have chosen to take up careers in personnel, industrial relations, finance, banking and business management.

Law (Exempting) Master of Law and Practice (MLP), incorporating LLB(Hons) The Master of Law and Practice (MLP) is an exciting Master’s degree that provides a clear route to professional qualification. The degree gives you an exemption from the Legal Practice Course (LPC), which is the second vocational stage of training you need to qualify as a solicitor, so it could see you well on your way to your chosen profession. The four-year Master of Law and Practice (MLP) course helps you meet all the academic requirements before going on to start your legal training, so once you graduate successfully, you can move on to train directly with a legal firm. By studying law in this way, you’ll be able to access tuition fee loans and other financial support, so you won’t have to fund a separate LPC course on top of your LLB(Hons). That could
save you quite a sum, and make all the difference when you’re trying to get established in your legal career. We keep things flexible. After your second year if you decide you’d rather do the three-year LLB(Hons) then that’s fine. Pass your LLB(Hons) and you’ll have a law degree that qualifies you to go on to train as a solicitor or barrister. To do that, you’ll have to complete a separate professional practice course, as well as a training contract or pupillage.

Whether you’re looking to become a solicitor or a barrister, the LLB is the main route that people take towards getting qualified in the legal profession. It’s your first step on the way to what could be a brilliant, dynamic and rewarding career. This course gives you the chance to gain a firm understanding of legal principles and core legal concepts. As you progress you’ll be able to start focussing on the topics that interest you, particularly in your second and third years, when you can choose from a range of specialised modules. Whichever side of law you go into, employers will be looking for a wide variety of skills, not just an understanding of law, but how to apply that understanding, how to put forward an argument, attention to detail, and the ability to work
in a team. We’ll help you to build your skills while you study and make yourself more attractive to potential employers. To help you take the first steps on your legal career we aim to give you as much experience as possible. MLP Route The four year MLP route gives you exemption from the Legal Practice Course (LPC), the second academic stage of training required for qualification as a solicitor. * Percentage of graduates from this course who go on to work and/or further study within six months of graduating (Destinations of Leavers Survey 2014/15). * The minimum standard for professional subjects required by the Solicitor Regulation Authority (SRA) are met.

“I grew up in Leeds and I wanted the opportunity to move away from home and live by myself. “The transition from being at home to becoming independent was much easier than I thought. I really enjoyed living at Storthes Hall in my first year. It was what you’d expect from your time at uni and more. I had such a great time going to student events and living in a student village. I met some of my best friends here and I expect them to be friends for life.
I’ve learned so much during my time here and I was surprised at how much support I was given.
“From a young age I’d always thought about having a career in law. I went on to study law at A level. I really enjoyed it and it made me certain that it’s what I want to do. “Huddersfield was one of the best universities for the course I wanted to study as it offers the Master’s in Law practice degree and I won’t have to do a separate LPC. Katy Ferris Lecturer, Law “When I was younger I wanted to be a teacher, later on I became fascinated by issues of justice. I grew up in Scunthorpe. My father was a welder and my mum a book keeper, they instilled in me a great work ethic. “I wanted to work here because of the strong links between the Business School and the local community, the award winning Law Clinic and the open door policy for students. This means we get to know the students as individuals and on graduation day I am every bit as proud as their families of their achievement. “I became interested in teaching law as a way of sharing my enthusiasm for learning. I’ve since published widely on issues of justice in a number of publications and journals.

The Oastler Building will be the new home for the Law School, the 6-storey, £27.5 million build includes new facilities such as high quality teaching rooms, study and social space, and a realistic mock court room; enabling students to practice their legal skills.
The Huddersfield Legal Advice Clinic won the Best Contribution by a Team of Students 2015 at the Attorney-General and LawWorks Awards presented at the House of Commons. Phil Drake, Senior Lecturer in Law and Director of the University’s Legal Advice Clinic. Phil was shortlisted in the category of ‘Most Innovative Teacher of the Year’ in The Times Higher Education Awards 2015.
