Every product, service and activity that you may consume and enjoy in your lifetime will have a supply chain and will rely on logistics and transportation to ensure customer satisfaction. This includes the food we eat, our journey to work and the electronic equipment we use for work and play. A wide range of knowledge, skills and experience is required for managers to work successfully in this sector and through our courses we aim to give you a thorough understanding of the commercial activity of transporting goods to customers. You’ll study core subjects like finance, economics, HR management, marketing and strategic management as well as choose your own specialist areas, like aviation, purchasing and supply, manufacturing operations, strategic supply chain management, project management, passenger transport or retail logistics. Many of your lecturers have worked in the commercial world. In the department there’s a range of experience across world-leading companies like American Express, IBM, Tibbett & Britten, DHL, Wincanton, Network Rail, Argos, Hallmark Cards and Unilever.
You can choose from a range of courses covering key areas in this dynamic sector. Each one focuses on business management but with an added insight into particular elements, such as air transport, transport, logistics operations or supply chain strategy. Choose Transport and Logistics if you’d like to study the management of the flow of people or goods and services, or Supply Chain Management if you’d like to understand how raw materials end up being goods on our shelves, and how mankind can sustainably reuse products that have been discarded. The emphasis is on giving you a chance to secure a great career. That’s why we have also developed two courses in partnership with key companies within the industry. Both these courses offer guaranteed work placements and a guaranteed graduate job through the NOVUS scheme.*** With a globalised world, whichever subject you choose, you could be in an ideal position to start your career journey.
* Excluding Supply Chain Management with Logistics (Top-up). ** Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching. *** To qualify for the guarantee you will need to graduate with a 2.1 degree and achieve satisfactory references from your placement employer and your personal tutor at the University.

My student journey so far
Mark Keresztes Supply Chain Management BSc(Hons)
“I was born in Hungary and moved to the UK when I was 13. I went to school in Bristol before moving to university. Having studied business at A Level, I knew I wanted to get a degree in this area. Logistics appealed to me because it’s a very dynamic industry with excellent employment opportunities. “Huddersfield offers the best logistics courses in the country and once I’d spoken to the lecturers it was clear to me that it would be be my first choice. “When I moved to Huddersfield I knew nobody, but it was surprising how easy it is to fit in and find new friends.
It was surprising how easy it is to fit in and find new friends. “The highlight of my time in university so far is travelling to the Czech Republic for the International Sustainable Logistics Conference with a group of my course mates. We competed against other universities, visited industrial sites and attended guest lectures.

I enjoyed 20 rewarding years in the industry
David Leach Senior Lecturer, Logistics, Transport and Supply Chain Management “Growing up on the south coast with a keen interest in nature, becoming a marine biologist was my childhood ambition. “While at university my interest in supply chain was captured by a lecturer who was passionate about the subject. I went on to study for an MSc in logistics and then enjoyed 20 rewarding years in the industry, finding out first hand about the excellent career opportunities on offer. “Joining the University was a case of the right opportunity in the right place at the right time. My most memorable event so far is presenting my research to a committee in an oak panelled room in the House of Lords, another is driving across the Trans Kalahari Highway to attend a conference.
It is really satisfying when you witness students click with something they have been struggling with.
“Logistics is an exciting industry that I can see myself working in for life. My dream is to become a senior director in a large company by the age of 30.”
“I love teaching and for me it is all about getting your message across in a lively and engaging way. It is really satisfying when you witness students click with something they have been struggling with.
