My student journey so far
Mike Wood Psychology BSc(Hons)
“I grew up in Otley, an old Yorkshire market town just north of Leeds. I’m from a proper Yorkshire family” explains Mike Wood, Psychology BSc(Hons) student. “I was always interested in science and I had a lot of pets when I was younger, so I wanted to be an astronaut or a vet!” It was Mike’s interest in science which eventually led him to studying Psychology at the University of Huddersfield. “The human brain is one of the least understood things on the planet. We know so little about it. We can study thought processes, human reactions, the way we form ideas about the world and how we develop from a young age. We all start off as just a few cells, and over such a short period of time we become humans. I find it fascinating.”
Mike dreams of continuing his fascination with psychology by entering the professional arena of academia. “My plan for the future is to do a PhD. I hope to then move into teaching and lecturing, and to contribute to the research world. “Freshers’ Fair is always fantastic! I’m the captain of the cycling team here at the University, so I ran a stall at the fair.”

Meet our staff
From surfing ambitions to developmental psychology
Paige Davis Lecturer, Psychology
“I wanted to be a pro surfer!” says Paige, recalling her childhood ambitions to travel around amazing surf spots like Jay Bay and the Gold Coast “I kept the surfing and abandoned the dream. Now I surf Beadnell Bay and Tynemouth off the Northumberland coastline.” Born outside of Philadelphia in the USA, Paige went to University in America where she majored in Psychology. Working in an inpatient psychiatric hospital for children in Florida led to her postgraduate study in England. “I loved living in the UK, I preferred the academic atmosphere of England and Huddersfield was the perfect fit for me in terms of research programmes, international feel, and its beautiful campus. “Developmental Psychology and Psychopathology has always interested me even as a young child. I started a babysitters club, and was a nanny throughout high school.
12
I was fascinated with the development of language and cognition which lead me to learn French and Arabic.” Paige is now a Lecturer across our Psychology courses at the University, “Here at Huddersfield I have the chance to look into children’s imagination play and how that relates to language, cognition, and social development. “What I enjoy most about teaching is being able to explain Developmental Psychology to students in a way that will inspire them to love the subject as much as I do. One of my favourite moments is when you see a student have a light bulb moment. That’s what keeps me teaching.”
I enjoy inspiring students to love the subject.
