Do you want to know what really goes on in the mind and the body during physical exercise? Many national governing bodies of sport and professional sports clubs now employ sports scientists, strength and conditioning coaches, and sports psychologists. They’re looking for those precious `marginal gains’ that can help their athletes compete to their full potential. This course could give you the skills to support people in achieving their best possible performance, while minimising their risk of injury.

Every day there’s another story in the news about how physical exercise can improve people’s wellbeing – not just physically, but mentally too. Meanwhile, the number of people with diseases linked to inactivity and poor nutrition is rising dramatically. This course looks at the science behind the stories to help you develop expertise in a discipline that many employers are looking for.

This course is endorsed by SkillsActive, the Sector Skills Council for sport and exercise, enabling you to pick up some very useful industryrecognised qualifications while you’re studying with us. The course is also endorsed by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), and you could become a member of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs).

Leading an unhealthy lifestyle doesn’t just affect a person’s wellbeing, it has economic effects on society too. The course looks at two key areas, physiology and psychology, giving you the chance to explore why people behave the way they do and how the body works. By looking at both aspects, you’ll have the opportunity to develop professional skills and knowledge to promote physical activity as an intervention, helping people achieve a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle.

You’ll be able to take advantage of some great facilities, including our biomechanics and physiology labs, as well as our recently built sport and fitness centre. You’ll also have the chance to go on a work placement in your second year, giving you real-world professional experience. Previous students have undertaken placements with Primary Care Trusts, schools, colleges, local authority sports development units, private gyms and private sports providers.

Whether you want to teach or go on to become a physical activity coordinator, sports development officer, personal trainer or exercise referral specialist, this course will stand you in good stead once you move onto employment. Emma Sanford, graduated Sport, Exercise and Nutrition Sciences 2016, undertook her work placement at Newsome High School PE Department “My work placement was very fulfilling. I undertook a wide range of responsibilities and gained real insight into the life of a PE teacher, which built my confidence and developed my knowledge of all curricular sport. It has made me a more rounded candidate when entering the real world of work.”

On the course you’ll explore three main areas: physiology, psychology and biomechanics. Physiology looks at how the body responds to exercise and physical activity, what factors might hold back an athlete and how appropriate training can improve performance. Sport psychology looks at how a person’s way of thinking might affect their performance, and how they can use psychological skills to improve it. Biomechanics focuses on applying the laws of physics to human biological systems.

You’ll be taught by lecturers who are experts in their fields, including strength and conditioning, elite sport testing, physiotherapy and coach education. And you’ll be able to use some excellent facilities, including our biomechanics and physiology labs, as well as our recently built sport and fitness centre. Facilities like these are part of the reason why our Sport, Exercise and Nutrition Sciences courses scored 97% for learning resources in the National Student Survey 2016. Aaron Green, graduated Sport, Exercise and Nutrition Sciences 2014, now Strength and Conditioning Coach at Thongsbridge Tennis Club “The course was ideal as I wasn’t sure what I wanted to specialise in, it covered a range of areas but the assignments and tasks were easily manipulated to my area of interests. The placements gave me first-hand experience of what I needed to be successful in this industry and gave me practical skills to go out and collect data from athletes which I have carried on doing in my career.”

My student journey so far

Precious Oladipo Exercise Science BSc(Hons)

“I used to play with my toys and pretend to teach them!” says Precious Oladipo from SouthEast London, recalling her childhood dream of becoming a teacher. “I also wanted to be a professional gymnast, but I stopped doing gymnastics when I was 12.” Her early interest in sport led her to studying Exercise Science BSc(Hons) at the University of Huddersfield. “My mum’s a dietician and I wanted to be like her, and I’ve always been interested in health. I saw the course content for Exercise Science, and it seemed really practical and hands-on. The anatomy content appealed to me a lot because I like that side of biology. “I did a work placement with a physiotherapist, and also worked in a nursery”, explains Precious. These experiences have led to her future goals.

“I’m planning to do a Master’s in physiotherapy, and then work in rehabilitation and physical activity with children and pregnant women. It’s really important because pregnant women play a massive role in the development of fat cells in their foetus. If they don’t exercise, the foetus’ fat cells can grow in size. “Since I’ve come to University, I’ve made some great friendships. I also like the scenery around here. It’s a really nice area to be in.”

I saw the course content and it appealed to me a lot.

Meet our staff

From the Armed Forces to academia

Matt Haines

Senior Lecturer, Sport, Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Matt is a Yorkshireman and lives with his family in his home city, Leeds. After leaving school, he joined the Armed Forces. “I was drawn to the physical and mental challenge of serving as a Royal Marine. It was a fantastic experience which was ultimately cut short by an injury. However, my passion for exercise was established.” After completing a Master’s degree and teaching in colleges, Matt then joined the University of Huddersfield in 2008. He’s now a Senior Lecturer on the University’s Sport, Exercise and Nutrition Sciences courses, and a BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist. “My passion for sport and exercise developed into a fascination for how the human body worked, in particular the physiological aspects of how the body responds and adapts to exercise. Studying sport and exercise science greatly developed my

12

interest in science – to the point where I now consider my primary interest to be science, rather than sport and exercise. “The breadth of topics covered in the science of sport, exercise and health don’t form a single disciplinary context. They are properly understood within a matrix of disciplines from anatomy, biochemistry, biomechanics, philosophy, physiology, psychology, sociology and beyond. I consider it a privilege to be an educator, researcher and practitioner in this field.”

Graduation day for my students is always a memorable event.
