If you choose one of our Accountancy and Finance courses,** your qualification will equip you with a range of professional exemptions from the main accountancy bodies.*** Academic learning, professional know-how plus excellent work experience; it could all add up to a spectacular career. Whatever course you study, our Partners in Accountancy scheme links our students with major accountancy firms. We currently have nine firms taking part: RSM, BDO, Grant Thornton, Wheawill and Sudworth, KPMG, Kirk Newsholme, PwC, Revell Ward and Simpson Wood. These companies are on hand to offer careers advice and mentoring and also get involved on campus, working with you in seminars to give you a great insight into the profession.

International Accountancy (Top-up) BA(Hons)

A qualification in Accountancy could help you find employment not just with businesses in the UK but with global businesses too. This one-year top up course puts traditional accountancy into a global context. It could be ideal if you’ve already studied accounting and want to explore contemporary issues in an international setting.

You’ll look at management accounting and international business. At the start of the year you’ll be able to choose the optional modules that interest you to build your own career path. Options include audit framework, strategic management, investment management and tax framework.

If you’re going to be an accountant in the UK or abroad it’s vital you understand how organisations are financed and managed. That’s what’s at the core of our degree. We’ll give you invaluable insights into how international companies are run, and then give you the chance to specialise in particular areas.

Dr Kay Smith

Senior Lecturer, Accountancy and Finance “I always wanted to be a teacher, and initially trained to teach in a secondary school, however my interest in finance meant that it was more appealing to teach in further and higher education. “I am local, originally I am from Holmfirth, and have worked in further and higher education for over 12 years in Barnsley and Doncaster, teaching on courses at all levels, but I particularly enjoyed working with undergraduate and postgraduate students. In September 2007 I took an opportunity to join the Accountancy and Finance team at the University of Huddersfield to teach Quantitative Analysis and Finance and I have never looked back.

I became interested in teaching because of my lack of confidence when being taught maths. “I became interested in teaching because I lacked confidence when being taught maths from a very early age. I decided that there must be a better way for students to learn about maths, so that they would find the subject more interesting and useful, although accountancy is not just about the numbers. “My most memorable events are seeing the students inspired and enjoying learning about accountancy. It’s fantastic to see students graduating with us and going onto successful careers.”

“I grew up in a small town called Morley just outside of Huddersfield and I decided to stay at home, which hasn’t stopped me from getting involved with the social events.

“I also chose this course because there was a placement year, allowing you to not only gain a degree but also work experience which is a great advantage when applying for graduate jobs.

“I chose accountancy and finance because I wanted to go into a course that I would enjoy and challenge me. It appealed to me as I am interested in finding out the financial side of a business.

“My placement year was with the NHS, I was extremely proud in successfully gaining a placement and I got to attend a placement Awards event where I was awarded with a certificate.

One of the main things that has surprised me about university is how friendly the staff and students are.

“My dream for the future is to complete my professional qualifications to become a chartered accountant. And find a challenging career where I can progress to my full potential. “One of the main things that has surprised me about university is how friendly the staff and students are. I also have found the social side of things much better than I expected and there are so many opportunities you can get involved in.”
