Architecture and the Built Environment helps you get under the skin of buildings to understand how they are created conceptually and physically. You’ll learn how all sorts of disciplines like design and social planning come together to create a cityscape. It’s as much about hopes and dreams as bricks and mortar. So many things go into creating a successful building, which is why we aim to help you develop diverse skills. You’ll be encouraged to think critically and creatively to solve tough challenges. And you’ll build up the practical skills you’ll need on the job. At the end of your course you should be able to come up with ingenious solutions to building challenges that could make you extremely employable. It’s not all on the drawing board either. We aim to get you out into the real world, with links to industry and commerce in the UK and overseas. We also offer opportunities to work on real world projects, with some big name developers and architects. Every step of the way, we focus on the skills that the building and construction industry needs. From architects to architectural technologists,

from surveyors to construction project managers – we can help you prepare for your ideal career. You’ll get to study in some inspiring surroundings. Our contemporary studios are kitted out with advanced 3D technology like Computer Aided Design (CAD) and 3D computer visualisation. You’ll be able to use multi material 3D printers too, creating 3D models. Expert technical staff will help you get your visions down on paper, into 3D or virtual reality. And if you want to understand how inspiring places get built, or have ambitions to design or construct the next Pompidou Centre, you’ll be offered all the support you need. * Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching.

Architecture/Architecture (International) (RIBA Part 1) BA(Hons) There are so many inspiring buildings and environments – not just in Europe, but across the world. This course takes a unique approach to architecture by enabling you to look at places and cultures on an international scale. We’ll look at different regions and the cultural context behind their architecture, and give you the chance to create your own designs in response. We focus on helping you to create designs that are sustainable and inspiring. And we’ll also give you the chance to develop your skills through the latest technology, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM). There are two sides to the course - Architecture explores the complex regional, cultural, ethical and environmental issues that underlie the built environment. And Architecture (International) allows you to put into practice what you’ve learned through an extended overseas field study visit** to a location beyond Europe.

It’s also validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). In fact, if you graduate you will then gain exemption from RIBA’s Part 1 Professional Examinations. That’s the first of three examinations you need to pass to qualify and register as an architect, all of which you can undertake here at Huddersfield.

Architectural Technology BSc(Hons)

Are you practically minded? Do you enjoy being creative, and do you have a vision for the buildings and cityscapes of the future? Our Architectural Technology degree could help you on your way towards a dynamic and fulfilling career. You’ll have the chance to gain a thorough understanding of construction and develop some sought-after skills too. This course is part of our integrated suite of architecture and built environment courses, which has some great links with the sector in the region. We focus on making the course as relevant to industry as possible, so you’ll have the chance to equip yourself with the skills you need.

Recent graduates have visited Vietnam, Malaysia, India and China. The course is recognised by the Architects Registration Board (ARB). That’s good news if you’re hoping to continue on to be an architect, as you have to register with the ARB to be able to practise using the title ‘architect’ in the UK.

You’ll gain a thorough understanding of construction techniques and architectural detailing. The aim is for you to be able to apply your expertise in architectural technologies to the design of cost-efficient and sustainable buildings. So you’ll have

the opportunity to develop your creativity while understanding the materials, components, structural systems and environments behind the world’s best buildings. We’ll look at every stage of a construction project, from the development of the client brief through to design, procurement, construction, operations and maintenance of build assets. You’ll be able to build your leadership skills too, as well as skills in Lean Construction and Building Information Modelling (BIM) from world-leading industry practitioners and academics. You’ll have the chance to work on projects with peers from other disciplines like Architecture, Construction Project Management, Building Surveying and Quantity Surveying. All with the aim of enabling you to gain the skills you need to work in collaborative, multidisciplinary teams across the globe.

Construction Project Management BSc(Hons)

Turning a building design into a completed project takes a huge amount of work. You have to carefully manage experts from a range of professions and trades, and liaise with clients, end users and designers to make sure it all goes smoothly. This course aims to give you the skills to take a project to completion, on time and on budget.

We will also look at BIM, to show you how it could help deliver better value too. BIM enables clients, constructors and other parties to collaborate on projects, physically and virtually, wherever in the world they happen to be based. That means that projects can be managed more effectively, generating better value for clients and having less impact on society.

Construction is a global industry, and we want to give you the skills to be able to make your mark in your chosen profession. We’ll help you develop an understanding of what goes into global construction at each stage of a project.

Surveying (Building Surveying) BSc(Hons)

With a thriving global construction industry, a career in surveying could open up new horizons to you across the world. Our Surveying (Building Surveying) BSc(Hons) focuses on the latest UK and international surveying practices and could help you gain the qualification and experience you need to find employment in this exciting industry sector. Building Surveyors can take on a number of roles in the construction industry. Surveying property, diagnosing defects, designing and altering premises and providing professional advice to clients. This course gives you the chance to explore all sides of the profession, building up your technical, professional, legal and managerial skills as you go. One particularly important part of building surveying is complying with regulatory requirements for refurbishments and new build projects. So we’ll look at legislation like the 2015 Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations.

Governments across the world are also encouraging the construction industry to introduce Lean Construction and Building Information Modelling (BIM). Lean Construction aims to manage and improve the whole process of design, construction and end-use of a building project to achieve minimum cost and maximum value. And Building Information Models help to manage the costs of materials and labour for a project, which can help Building Surveyors manage the building environment through its lifecycle. The degree is part of our suite of architecture and built environment courses. So you’ll be studying with peers from other subjects such as Construction Project Management, Architecture, Architectural Technology and Quantity Surveying. Surveying (Quantity Surveying) BSc(Hons)

The Quantity Surveying BSc(Hons) course at Huddersfield looks at the latest surveying practice, both in the UK and internationally. The course focuses particularly on the role of Quantity Surveyor, aiming to give you the skills and experience to find employment in the global construction industry. Quantity Surveyors can take on a number of roles in the construction industry. Managing costs and value during design and construction, managing construction contracts, advising on procurement, managing risks and quantifying construction work. This course gives you the chance to develop the skills you need to work in construction teams, applying the latest processes and technologies. Two crucial tools for today’s Quantity Surveyor are Lean Construction and Building Information Modelling (BIM). Our course will give you the chance to explore both areas and understand their relevance to construction.

Lean Construction focuses on delivering minimum cost and maximum value for a construction project, looking at how the process of design, construction and end-use of a building is managed. Building Information Modelling is used to enhance Lean Construction, giving surveyors tools to manage the costs of materials and labour in projects. A brand new backdrop to your studies From 2019, students from across our art, design and architecture courses will be co-located in an exciting, brand new facility – the Barbara Hepworth Building. Experimental and forward-thinking in its design and function, the £30 million building will set the scene for creativity and multidisciplinary learning. It will provide an adaptable internal space with technology at its heart, bringing digital and physical innovation together in one space, and offering state of the art making facilities. It will house contemporary studio spaces, upto-date Apple Mac suites and PC labs, laser cutting workshops, facilities that offer advanced 3D technologies and a state of the art digital lab providing the latest technologies in augmented reality, virtual reality, motion capture and high performance visualisation. Named after the famous West Yorkshire born sculptor, the building’s main frontage will overlook the picturesque Huddersfield Narrow Canal that runs through the heart of the University’s campus. Jade Reed-Williams Architecture (International) (RIBA Part 1) BA(Hons)

“Where I live, it’s just fields and sheep!” exclaims Jade Reed-Williams, bemoaning the lack of architecture in her hometown of Denbigh, North Wales. Jade’s interest in the built environment developed from visiting new places.

Her childhood interest in buildings led Jade to studying Architecture at the University of Huddersfield. “It’s a really interesting course. Technology is always evolving and pushing the boundaries.

“I remember going to London when I was quite little. I’ve always found it interesting to see different places. Wherever you go, the buildings are completely different.”

“Our final year study visit is a three-week trip to Vietnam. We’ll do an urban study, looking at everything from the building typology to the social history of the area. Then when we come back, we’ll design a building that we think is suitable for the place.

“I have a love for medieval gothic architecture, but I also like very contemporary buildings as well. I dread to think what my house would look like!”

Danilo Di Mascio Lecturer in Architecture

“I really enjoy the highly creative atmosphere of the design studio, the constructive dialogue with students and supporting them to develop their designs and representations. I always try to bring out the best in students and trigger their curiosity about architecture and related disciplines. I believe it’s important to develop research projects and teaching activities that I’m passionate about, then we can work together to communicate this passion and students can find what they’re passionate about too.”

Danilo grew up and graduated in Architecture in Italy, where he’s also a licensed architect. His PhD was awarded with a Doctor Europaeus Award in 2012 (fulfilling the four requirements established in 1992 by EUA, the European University Association). Danilo has undertaken research projects about the comprehension, analysis and documentation of tangible and intangible features of architecture in five different countries: Belgium, England, Italy, Scotland and United States. “My international academic experience provides me with knowledge from various cultural contexts, and this feeds in to all my teaching, research and creative activities.” Danilo participated, as author and speaker, at various international conferences in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. During the CAADRIA Conference held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2010), he received the Young CAADRIA Award for his research. “The University of Huddersfield supports my research and creative activities and encourages experimentation, innovation and multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches.” After more than twelve years of academic experience, Danilo joined the University of Huddersfield in September 2017. Danilo says; “The outstanding achievement of the University of Huddersfield in teaching and the continuous investment in high-quality research-led teaching and learning environments made this University the perfect choice to develop my career and the careers of our future students.”
