My student journey so far
Abbie Hollister Business Management BA(Hons)
“I grew up in a small village called Littleborough in Lancashire. I’m very close to my family, so when it came to choosing a university I wanted to stay near to home. “Throughout school I studied art, design and textiles, but I chose Business Management because I wanted to gain a degree in something versatile that would be useful in whichever career I choose. I think having a creative background helps, particularly with all the presentations and exhibitions that we’ve had to do.
I didn’t realise how confident I was until I came to university!
“I didn’t realise how confident I was until I came to university! I’ve had many live projects working with companies where I’ve had to lead my team and I loved it. It’s a lot of work, but the projects and essays are very exciting which makes it feel worthwhile and keeps me interested. “Besides successfully completing my projects, one of my biggest achievements has been winning the ‘Best Student of the Year’ award on my course in both year one and two. “After I graduate, I’d like to gain some work experience in a creative area of business, like marketing or branding, and then come back for a Master’s degree. I’m really excited for the future!”

Teaching my subject allows me to really draw on a range of real-life examples
Dr Shelley Harrington Lecturer, Business and Management “When I was younger, I was convinced that I wanted to be a vet. However, during some work experience at a vets during my teenage years, I watched an operation on a rabbit and promptly fainted - so that was the end of that career choice!
I particularly enjoy looking at how CEOs and their behaviour patterns can make informed decisions.
“As a youngster I was also always interested in psychology, and as an adult I have gravitated towards psychology in business. I particularly enjoy looking at how CEOs and their behaviour patterns can make informed decisions. “I am originally from Marlborough, Wiltshire and I came to work at the University in 2015 after completing my PhD. My greatest achievement was getting my PhD, as it has enabled me to have a career that I love! “What I enjoy most about teaching is engaging with students and getting them passionate about the subject. Teaching my subject allows me to really draw on a range of real-life examples and case studies which can create great debate! My favourite event are the graduation ceremonies, as they are always a really special occasion.”
