In the past chemical engineering has quietly (or sometimes noisily!) served the material and energy needs of society. But in the 21st century, in the face of global challenges of climate change and fossil fuel depletion, the need is for chemical engineers to change the world by changing the ways in which we meet our needs for food, water, energy and materials. Chemical engineers transform the visions of chemists and biochemists into industrial-scale reality, to make the benefits of new products and processes available to the world. At Huddersfield you’ll be able to develop your interests, with a choice of degrees across mainstream chemical engineering, or combining chemical engineering and chemistry, that could help you to gain real-world experience and enhance your career prospects. This could be the vital first step into a career in an industry such as chemical manufacturing, environmental consultancy, nuclear engineering, scale-up and plant design, process plant trouble shooting, oil and gas, water and energy, research and development, and patent law and teaching. To nail a job, you’re going to have to show that you’ve got the practical skills to deliver. That’s why our courses focus on practical applications, as well as chemical engineering equations. world too. All our courses have optional or compulsory placement years in the third year. You could work in a cutting-edge industry or a research institute – to build up a compelling CV. So what are your prospects after Huddersfield? Well, the chemical industry is an important industrial sector employing many chemical and process engineers, and chemical engineers are unique in being able to design chemical processes. Chemical Engineering BEng(Hons)

On our Chemical Engineering BEng(Hons) course provides in-depth coverage of modern, industryrelevant chemical engineering material from the basics of organic and physical chemistry to the finer points of process design. Along the way you’ll get the chance to develop your understanding of the legal and environmental concerns that also play an important role in the industry. Supported by experienced doctoral level academics, you’ll learn through a mix of lectures, tutorials, workshops and practical lab sessions. Underpinning all of our teaching is an emphasis on transferrable skills, so whether you’re getting to grips with instruments in the lab, using industry-specific software packages or working on a group presentation, you’ll get a whole range of opportunities to get

Chemical Engineering MEng

Building on our three-year BEng(Hons) degree, this course offers you the chance to benefit from a further year taught at the Master’s level. During the course we’ll cover modern, industry-relevant chemical engineering material from organic and physical chemistry to the finer points of process design. Along the way you’ll get the chance to develop your understanding of the legal and environmental concerns that also play an important role in the industry. Supported by experienced doctorallevel academics you’ll learn through a mix of lectures, tutorials, workshops and practical lab sessions. Underpinning all of our teaching is an emphasis on transferrable skills, so whether you’re getting to grips with instruments in the lab, using industry-specific software packages or working on a group presentation, you’ll get a whole range of opportunities to get hands-on

experience and maximise your employability. Studying on the MEng you’ll have the chance to expand on the solid foundations you’ll get from your Chemistry, Maths and Design modules in your first three years, to complete advanced modules and an advanced research project. It’s a course designed to help set you up for a career in chemical manufacturing, environmental consultancy, nuclear engineering, scale-up and plant design, process plant trouble shooting, oil and gas, water and energy, research and development, patent law and teaching and many other industries, but also to offer that extra breadth and depth of study and research associated with Master’s level courses.

Chemical Engineering and Chemistry BSc(Hons)

From fuel and clothing to pharmaceuticals and phones, chemistry is the central science that makes our modern everyday lives possible. Chemical engineering delves into how chemical reactions can be scaled up for industrial manufacturing. Evenly split across these two distinct but interlinked subjects, this course gives you the chance to become fluent in both areas and set yourself up for career opportunities in a wide range of industries that rely upon the ability to integrate both disciplines. Designed with a four-way split between core chemical engineering, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, this course also weaves problem-solving and logical reasoning through all the modules. We’ll show you how to take an imaginative approach to the subjects, so you’re not just learning the facts, but building the real-world knowledge and mastering the key skills that will help stand you in good

stead for your future career. In our chemical sciences labs you’ll have the opportunity to learn using the kind of instruments used in industry. And with an optional work placement in the UK or abroad in Year 3, you’ll find everything in place to help gear your study towards boosting your employability. On the course you’ll be taught by academics in specialist areas of chemistry and chemical engineering who are all educated to doctoral level in their subjects and involved in forward-thinking research. This ensures we keep our courses challenging, exciting and thoughtprovoking and helps prepare you well to start your own career.

Sean Duffy graduated from Chemistry MChem in 2017 and is now a Senior Research Technician (Nanomaterials and Composites) at the Centre for Process Innovation “The skills that I learned through my degree have allowed me to integrate successfully into a dynamic team. I now work in all different areas of nanotechnology with a main focus on graphene and its real life applications such as concepts for flooring and aeroplanes. This could contribute towards a more economical and cost efficient world.”

I got to learn about analytical techniques used in industry. This will help develop my final year thesis for my experimental design project.”

Getting stuck into the four main disciplines of biology, chemistry, maths and physics, you’ll have the chance to get a grounding in the scientific knowledge you’ll need no matter which route you eventually decide to take. But it’s not just about theory here. Our professional, dedicated and friendly staff are on hand to help reshape the way you learn, challenge you to rethink your own practices and equip you with the skills that will be the foundations for your further studies. Taught through lectures, tutorials and laboratory practicals in our modern

facilities, you’ll get the benefit of the staff’s expertise in both academia and industry. Optional drop-in sessions offer a great opportunity for you to strengthen your knowledge and make sure you’ve got a clear understanding of all the material as you go along. On successful completion of this year (you must pass all six modules), you’ll be able to start the first year of your degree in the subject areas of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering*, Forensic Science or Pharmacy.**

** Progression onto Pharmacy MPharm is dependent on meeting stringent performance levels in the Science Extended Degree. You must pass all six modules with an overall pass mark of at least 70%. Dr Daniel Belton

Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering “I’ve been interested in chemical engineering since I was a teenager. A family member worked with chemical engineers and told me all about it. He said, “Chemical engineers work on a wide range of projects”. I also visited a chemical engineering plant and was fascinated by the idea of taking low-cost raw materials and processing them to produce high value products.

Chemical engineering touches every aspect of life, from the water we drink and the food we eat, to the materials of tomorrow. “I really loved maths, physics and chemistry at school so I chose these for my A Levels. At university chemical engineering was one of the few areas where I could combine all three of these subjects. As an undergraduate at the University of Manchester I completed two industrial placements, as a process engineer, which gave me important experience at that stage in my career. After university I studied for a PhD in chemical engineering and analytical science. “I always wanted to go into teaching and had experience of teaching in a secondary school as part of my PhD, so when the opportunity came up at the University of Huddersfield as a Lecturer I took it. “My most memorable event here at Huddersfield is being proud of my students when they graduate and go into the world of work to make a difference. “I view student learning as a collaboration between the lecturer and student. I want students to gain the knowledge and skills that will set them up for their future careers. I am also using my research into graphene to develop exciting and interesting projects for final year MEng students.”

My student journey so far

Jamie Wordsworth Chemical Engineering MEng “I’ve always had a keen interest in science and my A Levels were in biology, chemistry and maths. At college I found out about chemical engineering through a visiting Lecturer from the University of Huddersfield. I then based my extended project qualification on chemical engineering and worked with a Lecturer from the University on this.

During my placement year I gained hands-on chemical engineering experience and saw the theory I’d studied in my degree translated into real world scenarios. “I chose to study the Chemical Engineering MEng course as it’s the perfect combination of chemistry and maths for me. Plus, the career prospects are really flexible. At Huddersfield there’s also a focus on chemistry, so this keeps my options open and also helps to prepare me to speak to chemists as part of my chemical engineering role. “My most memorable event has been my industrial placement year as a Junior Process Engineer at Manrochem in Yorkshire. I gained hands-on experience in chemical engineering design and conducting hazard and operability studies (HAZOP). It was good to see the applications of what I’d studied in my degree, such as heat transfer and fluid flow, in the context of the real world. Once I graduate I’d like to further develop my career path, gaining a greater depth of knowledge and experience in a variety of chemical industries such that I am then able to progress on to become a Chartered Chemical Engineer. “There’s a great balance of study and social life here and I’ve met lots of people and friends, especially at the Freshers’ events and the societies I’ve joined.”

Leah Bentley Chemical Engineering BEng(Hons) “I studied chemistry, physics and maths at A Level, which I chose because I’ve always had a strong interest in science and thought this combination of subjects would open up lots of opportunities for me in the future.

I’ve been offered a graduate job at Tata Steel in North Wales, where I completed my placement year. It’s a position similar to my placement role but with more responsibility. “When looking into different degrees, chemical engineering seemed much more industry-based than other science and engineering courses I’d seen. I liked that it combined all of my A Level subjects, but also gave me the chance to experience something completely new. “I applied to the University of Huddersfield through clearing as I didn’t get the A Level results I’d expected. My Sixth Form Tutor advised me to apply to Huddersfield because of its strong focus on placements and employability skills. I then attended the Clearing Open Day, which included a tour of the Chemical Engineering facilities and I was impressed with what I saw. “I developed lots of professional skills during my placement, which I’m now using in my final year. I worked in manufacturing and process management for pre-finished steel products, with a focus on problem solving, quality management and process safety. “I’m now in my final year and one of my most memorable events has been attending the annual ‘Frank Morton’s Day’, a national event where chemical engineering students from UK universities get together to play sports, attend a careers fair and socialise. It’s a great opportunity to network and find out about future employment prospects as well as being a lot of fun! “Whilst at Huddersfield, I’ve also had the chance to act as student ambassador, course representative and have a role in the Chemical Engineering Society committee. I would say to anyone thinking of studying Chemical Engineering at Huddersfield to go for it!
