Chemistry is fundamental for the manufacture of so many products, including everything from pharmaceuticals to fuel, while chemical engineering deals with the factors involved in large-scale chemical reactions and industrial manufacturing processes. We offer a range of degrees across both subjects that could help you gain real-world experience and enhance your career prospects. You may have already begun to specialise in key areas of study. At Huddersfield you’ll be able to develop your interests, with a choice of degrees across mainstream chemistry, chemical engineering and pharmaceutical chemistry. Chemical Engineering and Chemistry BSc(Hons)
From fuel and clothing to pharmaceuticals and phones, chemistry is the central science that makes our modern everyday lives possible. Chemical engineering delves into how chemical reactions can be scaled up for industrial manufacturing. Evenly split across these two distinct but interlinked subjects, this course gives you the chance to become fluent in both areas and set yourself up for career opportunities in a wide range of industries that rely upon the ability to integrate both disciplines. Designed with a four-way split between core chemical engineering, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, this course also weaves problem-solving and logical reasoning through all the modules. Pharmaceutical Chemistry BSc(Hons)
Studying for your Pharmaceutical Chemistry BSc(Hons) degree with us gives you the chance to explore all the fundamentals of organic chemistry, biochemistry and pharmacology while providing you with the option to develop a specialism in pharmaceutics. Pharmaceutical Chemistry MSci
Designed for students targeting a career in the pharmaceutical industry, this four-year undergraduate Master’s course includes a placement in your third year where you can combine in-depth academic study with gaining real-world experience. Our Pharmaceutical Chemistry MSci degree gives you the chance to explore all the fundamentals of organic chemistry, biochemistry and pharmacology while providing you with the option to develop a specialism in pharmaceutics. Where this course differs from the Pharmaceutical Chemistry BSc(Hons) degree is that the third year of the MSci is a compulsory UK placement year in industry, a government agency or academic research group. We’ll support you to find a place that’s right for you and wherever you choose to go, you’ll complete academic assignments alongside your work experience.
From day one you’ll be building up your knowledge and getting to practise the skills that are sought after by a wide range of industries. Pharmacology

On this course, you’ll be looking at all aspects of pharmacology including neurodegenerative diseases and other conditions affecting ageing populations, as well as infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV-AIDS. You’ll also have the chance to study topics around public health and increase your understanding of emerging pathogens and those that are becoming resistant to antibiotics. If you don’t have the appropriate qualifications for direct entry to one of our science based degrees, you can apply to our Science Extended Degree. Getting stuck into the four main disciplines of biology, chemistry, maths and physics, you’ll have the chance to get a grounding in the scientific knowledge you’ll need no matter which route you eventually decide to take. But it’s not just about theory here. Our professional, dedicated and friendly staff are on hand to help reshape the way you learn, challenge you to rethink your own practices and equip you with the skills that will be the foundations for your further studies. Taught through lectures, tutorials and laboratory practicals in our modern
facilities, you’ll get the benefit of the staff’s expertise in both academia and industry. Optional drop-in sessions offer a great opportunity for you to strengthen your knowledge and make sure you’ve got a clear understanding of all the material as you go along. On successful completion of this year (you must pass all six modules), you’ll be able to start the first year of your degree in the subject areas of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering*, Forensic Science or Pharmacy.**

Chemistry is relevant to many aspects of everyday life
Dr Lindsay Harding Senior Lecturer in Analytical Chemistry “I’ve always been interested in how things work, which is why I’m a scientist. I became interested in my field of study at school as chemistry was my favourite subject at GCSE and A Level. Also chemistry is relevant to many aspects of everyday life.
I love keeping myself and my students up to date with the latest developments in analytical chemistry through my research and teaching. “I grew up in Berkshire and studied at the University of Kent at Canterbury for my undergraduate degree in Chemistry with Environmental Science BSc(Hons). After a period of working I came to Huddersfield to study for my PhD, and in 2007 I became a Lecturer here. Before my PhD I had a job as an Analytical Chemist and I saw how the theory I’d learnt could be used in practice in a career. “My most memorable event here at Huddersfield was seeing my first students graduate. I felt immense pride at seeing the results of all their hard work and achievements. “What I enjoy the most about teaching my subject is relating to the students, explaining things to them and seeing that ‘penny drop’ moment. I love keeping myself and my students up to date with the latest developments in analytical chemistry through my research and teaching. I feel this can also help to contribute to their employability and future career prospects.”

“At school I liked the sciences and was good at maths, so I combined them all by studying biology, chemistry and maths at A Level, as this provided a good basis for a wide variety of choice across various degree courses.
Plus the Tutors I met were really interested in me as a person and not just what results I would achieve. Also the facilities and campus were brilliant. I could really tell that the University invested in facilities for students.
“I chose to study Chemistry BSc(Hons) as I really liked chemistry at A Level. There’s lots of areas to go into, the job prospects are good and I still got to do maths. I chose the University of Huddersfield as I really liked that the teaching of chemistry included frequent practical lab sessions, which I thought would help me gain really useful experience for my future career.
“My most memorable event has been my presentation about my placement year at Nissan in Sunderland as a Paint Engineer. I gained a lot of confidence on my placement. Also how to work with different people and to present at meetings with different audiences. After my degree I’d like to study for a Master’s in environmental chemistry as I want to work for an environmental agency monitoring pollution.
