Our economics courses will provide you with the understanding of how economics underpins many of our everyday decisions and determines the health of the economy. The levels of interest rates, unemployment and inflation have consequences for all of us. We’ll look at macroeconomics, studying the interactions of income, inflation, exchange rates and consumption alongside microeconomics, studying practices such as competition, regulation and intervention. Studying an economics degree involves understanding increasingly complicated economic theories, often depicted diagrammatically or mathematically, as well as grasping statistical, economic models. What makes these theories and models relevant for you is a realisation of their significance in the real world, and how, whilst at University and when you have graduated, you can use the tools of economic analysis to calculate anything from how many hours to study or the impact of rising interest rates.

An economics degree offers so many varied opportunities for careers, for example in banking and finance, economics and management consultancy, government, journalism and accountancy to name just a few. This degree has been demonstrated to be valued by employers and benefits from a higher than average graduate salary. At Huddersfield we pride ourselves on the quality of our support and provision for students and appreciate that every student is unique. Throughout our teaching we place an emphasis on the applicability and relevance of the economic theories that we discuss so you’ll be able to apply your economics knowledge in your career – this is a skill that employers are increasingly demanding.

*Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching. **This applies to undergraduate courses of more than 12 months duration.

Businesses are hungry for people who understand the core principles of economics. This specialist expertise can help businesses grow, develop and succeed. Our Business Economics aims to give you a good grounding in the key concepts of the subject, getting you ready to apply economics in the business arena. The course focuses on three key areas: Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and Quantitative Economics. Macroeconomics gives you the chance to explore how high level factors such as incomes, inflation and consumption affect each other. Microeconomics looks at how individual businesses and even households behave, and how to develop models to analyse them in even greater detail. Quantitative Economics is about developing a range of tools to analyse the statistics and the mathematics behind the theory.

During the course you’ll be able to choose option modules to explore what excites you about the business world. The modules could help you decide which areas to specialise in and what career choices to make. We don’t expect you to be fully versed in business or economics before your course begins, as we aim to build up your understanding from first principles. We’ll also be looking at how mathematical tools can be used to analyse economic decisions. So any mathematics is very much applied to real world problems. You should come away from the course being able to understand and respond to situations in the business world, using a framework that you’ve established during your study of economics.

Money makes the world go round. And Economics helps you understand how it all works. It’s a fascinating subject that takes a wide variety of factors into account, and it could lead to an exciting career in all manner of industries too, in the private or public sector. Economics is the science of decision making. It’s vital in situations where events like changes in the price level of goods or services, or changes in interest rates affect how decisions are made. That’s why economists study how people, households, firms and governments allocate scarce resources to meet the needs of the population. By studying Economics, you’ll have the chance to understand global problems such as widespread poverty and inequality, high unemployment and rising pollution. You might also be able to tease out some of the solutions too. The course aims to give you an in-depth study of microeconomics, which includes sector specific practices such as competition, regulation and intervention.

You’ll also study macroeconomics, which focuses on the importance of aggregate consumption, investment, and what fuels economic growth. During your studies you will be able to tailor your degree by choosing optional modules such as accounting and environmental policy. Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to study statistics, quantitative methods and econometrics. All of which could help equip you with the tools used by professional economists to analyse economic policies. We don’t expect you to be fully versed in economics before your course begins, as we aim to build up your understanding from first principles. We’ll also be looking at how mathematical tools can be used to analyse economic decisions. So any mathematics is very much applied to real world problems. The course also gives you the opportunity to take a work placement in your third year, either in the UK or abroad.

“I’ve always been torn between studying a logical subject or something more creative. In the end I opted for economics which has mathematical components but also creative elements with the application and the theory. I enjoy learning about how the world works, and understanding theoretical models, economics is so relevant to everyday life, most relevant issues and real world problems have an economic element – and it’s great being able to understand the depth behind that.”

Meet our staff

The opportunities are so far reaching

Dr Sofia Izquierdo Sanchez Senior Lecturer, Economics “When I was younger I didn’t have a specific job that I wanted to do, but eventually settled on studying Economics, because I liked the broad range of opportunities that it has to offer. “I am originally from Zaragoza in Spain, where I studied both my degree and my master’s degree. When I started my studies, I was fortunate enough to enter into the Erasmus program, which is something we also offer at Huddersfield. However, my interest in Economics was really cemented whilst studying at Bristol – it’s amazing the influence that good lecturing can have on your future decisions.

It is easy working at Huddersfield Business School, as everyone is extremely kind, friendly and helpful, making it a great place to work. “I believe Economics is really important and relevant for everyone. I love teaching my subject because the opportunities that Economics can offer students are so far reaching; it’s great to think that we may be educating the next local MP or a future CEO or someone in the Bank of England. Of course, studying economics is not a sure ticket to change the world, but it does give you that chance. “It is easy working at Huddersfield Business School, as everyone is extremely kind, friendly and helpful, making it a great place to work. My biggest achievement to date is my first publication because it was the start of my career, hopefully a career with further and bigger achievements in the future.”

My student journey so far

Fahmida Nisa Economics BSc(Hons)

“I grew up in the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka. Moving away from home was a tough decision, but despite the big cultural difference, Huddersfield feels like home now. “I love how basic economic policies can make the world go round and how they’ve narrowed the gap between nations. “The Economics course at Huddersfield stood out to me because it had so many module options that I could mould the course into what suited me best.

I thought university would only be about studying. That’s definitely not the case!

“I have many great memories from my first year: becoming President of the Bangladeshi Student Society, participating in a charity fashion show, making friends who’ll last a lifetime. The most significant one has to be the happiness on my parents’ faces when I made the Dean’s list for meritorious performance. “I thought university would only be about studying and that I’d end up living in the library. That’s definitely not the case! Even after going to lectures and revising, I have plenty of time to socialise and work part-time. “For now I want to concentrate on my studies and building up my CV by securing a placement. After graduation, I’d like get some work experience before coming back for a Master’s, possibly even a PhD!”
