My student journey so far

Muhammed Sulayman Childhood Studies BA(Hons) “I didn’t really know what I wanted to do when I finished school and so took on an apprenticeship in plumbing at Bradford College. I very quickly realised that this wasn’t for me. At the same time I was also helping out at a local Youth and Community Centre – helping set it up and running some of the activities – I really loved this. “My involvement with the Centre, a family tragedy and not enjoying my apprenticeship made me think hard about what I wanted to do next.

The Childhood Studies course was the perfect choice as I wasn’t sure in which direction I wanted to take my future teaching career. The reward I got from volunteering and working with young people was really obvious so teaching was the natural choice. “A mentor at the Centre helped me with my application to university. The Childhood Studies course was the perfect choice as I wasn’t sure in which direction I wanted to take my future teaching career. Since starting the course I’ve met such amazing people – the tutors here are so friendly and I’ve learnt so much. “My future plans are to achieve a 2:1 or higher, and study for my PGCE – but first I’ll need to decide where my teaching career lies.”

Meet our staff

Bringing real-life experiences into the classroom

Amanda Crow Senior Lecturer, Early Years

“I’ve always been passionate about the development of children – seeing each child as an individual as well as part of their own family network – so, after working for 30 years in nurseries, children’s centres and on community projects my move into teaching seemed like a natural progression. The skills and knowledge I’ve gained throughout my career absolutely influence my teaching. It means that I bring real-life experiences to lectures and seminars. The importance of working with children, their parents and nursery practitioners is also the focus for my doctoral research and I’m able to share with students the importance of combining research, theory and practice; all essential skills that early years practitioners need to improve outcomes for the children they support.

I’m lucky enough to work with an extremely knowledgeable Early Years team. We’ve just celebrated the publication of our new book entitled ‘Work-based practice in the Early Years – a guide for students’, which underpins the majority of our teaching here at Huddersfield. “Having a positive placement experience is as important as achieving academically. As placement tutor, supporting students to get the most out of their placements is another really satisfying part of my role. “I’m lucky enough to work with an extremely knowledgeable Early Years team. We’ve just celebrated the publication of our new book entitled ‘Work-based practice in the Early Years – a guide for students’, which underpins the majority of our teaching here at Huddersfield. As part of my wider role I’ve also attended meetings on the future of family services in Westminster and presented at conferences in the UK, Finland and China. “The highlight of the job for me is seeing my students flourish in both their academic abilities and developing the skills to be confident early years practitioners.”
