With hard work comes reward. And that’s certainly the case in the events, hospitality and tourism sector. It can take months of planning to stage one event but if you get it right, it can be an incredibly fulfilling experience.

My placement year was a blast and I got a huge role in a great company. I look back on our very first event, where we organised a Christmas party and it was the first time I’ve got that big buzz by pulling off an event that everyone enjoyed. Rory Capel Events Management BA(Hons)

Meet our staff
My biggest achievements to date are the amazing work experiences I have had around the world!
Dr Adam Dennett Senior Lecturer, Tourism, Hospitality, and Events Management
“When I was younger I wanted to be a scientist or a policeman. I was always fascinated with how things worked or trying to overcome problems – particularly if it involved undertaking an experiment. I suppose I ended up being a social scientist, and enjoyed trying to unravel the complexities of certain social situations.
I became interested in working in this area as, like many others, I love to travel. “I originally came to the University of Huddersfield in 2005 as a student on the Tourism and Leisure Management course. I worked hard during my time as a student, and after a number of fantastic experiences, I had the opportunity to undertake a PhD at the University. Following the completion of my PhD, a job opening came up within the department and the rest is history. “I became interested in working in this area as, like many others, I love to travel. As I matured, I took a real interest in the travel and tourism industries, and the impact that my travel choices and behavioural decisions had on the destination and local community. Instead of just enjoying the travelling and experiencing new cultures, I was inquisitive to how the operations of the industry worked on a much deeper level. “What I enjoy most about teaching is the students, their passion, and commitment; it is a great privilege to see our students develop into aspiring professionals. “My biggest achievements to date are the amazing work experiences I have had around the world; from Australia, to China, to Walt Disney World USA!”

Dominica Kesanova Travel and Tourism Management BA(Hons)
“I grew up in a tiny little town very close by Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia. I moved away from home because of my little brother! When he got accepted to study at the University of Huddersfield, we came for a visit and I liked it so much I decided that I wanted to also come here and study.
It is challenging, it requires creativity, innovations and it is so complex that you never get bored.
“The most memorable event at the university was the Food and Drink festival for sure. It is amazing to see all the cultures at one place, trying to educate each other about their homes while having a good time. “In the future I would like to become a destination manager. Being responsible for development of tourism products, organising special events and festivals is what I will be looking for in the future. “The thing that has surprised me most about being at University is was to see how friendly everyone is. It encouraged me a lot to stop being afraid and ask for a help because there is always someone willing to help.”
“When I was choosing a course, I pictured myself working in the tourism field and I liked it. Tourism is such an interesting field to study, the nature of it is constantly changing. It is challenging, it requires creativity, innovations and it is so complex that you never get bored. To hear Dominica talk about her student journey visit hud.ac/profiles

“I grew up in West Somerset near Minehead, I moved away from home because I wanted to step outside my comfort zone and gain some independence. My decision for my chosen course was a late one, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but as I ran events for my sports team alongside being in the 6th form it was only natural that I was directed
The best experience of university was definitely my placement year as it helped me develop as a person.
towards event management. After reading about the course and with Huddersfield’s impressive reputation in the last few years it seemed a no brainer for me to choose to come here. “My placement year was a blast and I got a huge role in a great company, I look back on our very first event, where we organised a Christmas party and it was the first time I’ve got that big buzz by pulling off an event that everyone enjoyed. It is a truly magical feeling which increases the bigger the event you do. “In the future I would love to start my own events company, focusing on the sporting side to start with and then try and extend out to other sectors of events. “The best experience of university was definitely my placement year as is helped me develop as a person and I came back for my final year with a much more mature view on everything, from my studies to just general student life.”

Vicky Chan
Hospitality Business Management BA(Hons) “My family migrated to the UK from Hong Kong many years ago. We live in Hatfield, but I decided to come to Huddersfield because of the Hospitality Business Management course. I liked how it focused on the business side of hospitality rather than just the practical aspects. This gave me the opportunity to study economics, finance, human resources and marketing, broadening my career prospects for when I graduate.
I went to the USA for my placement. It’ll be a great memory to look back to!
“One of my favourite projects has been running a one-day event selling food to real customers. It was very challenging, but in the end we were very successful and completely sold out. “Another highlight of my course has been our class trip. It was a great opportunity to experience the hospitality industry in real life, but there was also plenty of time for exploring and experiencing a different culture together. “Coming to university has definitely boosted my confidence and convinced me that change is not necessarily a bad thing. I proved to myself that I can be independent by moving away from home. I even went to the USA for my placement and really enjoyed my time there. It’ll be a great memory to look back on!”
