Health Professions and Social Care is a huge subject. From nursing to social work, and from podiatry to operating department practice, we offer a range of courses to help you get started in your chosen career. They’ll give you the chance to develop the knowledge and practical experience needed. Our lecturers have close links with the health and social care sector. In fact, many of them will have done the job you’re training to do. Whilst you’re studying, you’ll be able to use state-of-the-art simulation equipment and purpose built environments. We have facilities designed to look like hospital areas and rooms in patients’ homes, so you can develop a feel for the environments you will be working in, and gain real insight into your chosen profession before you start your career.

Memberships Upon successful graduation on one of our health professions courses, you may be eligible to apply and register with your profession’s regulatory and professional body.

Our placements will give you the chance to put the skills you’ve learnt into practice. Depending on the course you choose, you could be working in a hospital, clinic, charity, school, in the community and with many health and social care providers – whatever you need to further your career chances. Our Health Professions courses are recognised by the relevant associated regulatory body. Once you’ve successfully graduated you’ll be able to register with them and take the next step in your career. Within Health Professions and Social Care there are so many careers that are possible. Health and Social Care MSci

This is an integrated four year Master’s degree. The course is designed to combine both undergraduate and postgraduate study into a single degree to equip you with the necessary skills, abilities and knowledge to meet the rapidly expanding and changing environment in health and social care.

Taking a hands-on approach you’ll have the opportunity to put your theoretical skills into practice through undertaking a work placement in your third year. This will support and enhance your learning, increase your future employability prospects and give you the chance to make useful contacts in industry so that you can reach your full potential.

Throughout the course you’ll be taught by a very supportive and experienced teaching team who have worked in a range of health and social care roles. They’ll use their expertise to bring their teaching to life with real-life case studies.

This course aims to give you the knowledge, understanding and core skills required to pursue a wide range of careers in a variety of statutory or non-statutory, community or residential health and social care settings. You’ll also be supported in exploring and identifying career choices for yourself. Graduates may work in specialist areas such as drug and alcohol use, housing, women’s centres, domestic violence and disability.

You’ll look at different aspects of health and social care, from looking at how to assess needs to being introduced to law, social policy, assessment and care planning. You’ll explore your own values in relation to working with diverse groups, and engage in becoming a reflective practitioner.

Our Midwifery Studies degree is designed to help you become a competent, confident and autonomous practitioner with the knowledge and skills to pursue a successful career. Learning from experienced midwives and gaining real-world experience in a variety of healthcare settings, you’ll be able to prepare to make a difference in the lives of women and their families. Many different cultural, social and health-related influences affect child-bearing women. On this course, we know just how important it is for midwives to learn about midwifery in context, to gain a broad perspective on the delivery of care and to be supported by enthusiastic lecturers who know exactly what it’s like to be a midwife. That’s why this course is designed by midwives for midwives. Gaining clinical experience is key to your professional development.

It’s also vital to build a deep understanding of how to work in a team alongside other healthcare professionals. That’s why the course includes undertaking clinical practice working across a range of settings including birth centres, midwife-led units, labour suites, antenatal/postnatal wards, as well as in the community. Throughout the course you’ll have the opportunity to build excellent knowledge of the theory of midwifery. Across all areas of teaching, we focus on the promotion of normality, health and the safe management of pregnancy, to ensure the best possible outcomes for parents and the newborn. We’ll also help you learn how to provide individualised care for the mother and baby throughout pregnancy, labour, childbirth and the early days of parenthood.

Learning disability nursing involves working with people who have a range of learning disabilities, providing hands on care in relation to a person’s complex physical, social and psychological needs. Learning disability nurses work in a number of settings, including the individual’s own home, schools, respite units, hospitals and secure services. They work independently and in multidisciplinary teams, learning how to respond to the needs of someone with a learning disability. Occupational Therapists work collaboratively with people to help them engage in those activities (occupations) which they need or want to do, enabling them to lead fulfilling and healthy lives. Occupations are practical and purposeful activities that allow people to live independently and have a sense of identity for example self-care, work or leisure tasks. Working with people of all ages in a variety of areas, you’ll assess an individual’s needs, devise treatment and provide interventions to maximise quality of life. Our Occupational Therapy BSc(Hons) degree is accredited by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You’ll learn how to integrate theory and principles whilst applying what you learn to different areas of practice. On this course you’ll have the opportunity to develop vital knowledge and practical skills. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of Occupational Therapy through

placements in different settings including areas such as an individual’s home, hospitals, schools, charities and prisons. We’ve also got a purpose-built occupational therapy skills lab where you can learn in authentic simulated environments. Occupational Therapists work interprofessionally and therefore you will study alongside other healthcare students including Physiotherapists, Nurses, Midwives, Operating Department Practitioners and Podiatrists. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop both the teamwork and autonomous practice skills required to work in a rapidly changing health and social care context. Upon successful graduation you could work for the NHS, social services, charities, social enterprises, community interest groups or in independent practice. There may also be opportunities in education, research or overseas as Occupational Therapists are also needed internationally.

Operating Department Practice BSc(Hons)

Do you like the idea of working in a dramatic and exciting environment, where you’ll be part of a dynamic team in an operating theatre? Then perioperative practice could be a great career option if you want to open up a whole host of opportunities for your future. Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) work alongside surgeons, anaesthetists and other medical staff to provide care for patients at all stages of the surgical process. On our Operating Department Practice degree you’ll get a strong grounding in the theory exploring what’s involved in the three interconnected aspects of the role: anaesthetic, surgical and post anaesthetic. The course is regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) so you’ll benefit from experienced staff, specialist labs and great links to NHS Trusts.

Placement Clinical placements are undertaken throughout this course.

You’ll have the opportunity to practise your skills in our simulated operating theatre, enabling you to experience the operating theatre environment. We know that learning on the job is often the best way to pick up new skills. That’s why we’ve designed the course to give you valuable hands-on experience in a wide variety of clinical placements. You’ll get the chance to work in the real world as part of interdisciplinary teams in a variety of care settings, so you’ll be able to see how ODPs contribute to all sorts of specialist areas, and be inspired about where your career could take you. From the very beginning, you’ll be supported in your learning by academic staff and qualified practitioners who understand what it’s like to be an ODP. As the course progresses, you’ll move beyond the fundamentals to delve into the role research plays in perioperative practice and explore leadership and management strategies.

Are you fascinated by how our muscles, joints and bones work together to make us move? On our Physiotherapy degree you’ll get the chance to delve into all the science behind the practice and build the skills and understanding you need to work in this hands-on and rewarding profession. This course is accredited by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council, so you can be confident it has independent approval. Throughout the course you’ll learn in small groups so you can take advantage of the high levels of support on offer. Exploring all aspects of practice from musculoskeletal physiotherapy and health management to neurological conditions and working with vulnerable client groups, you’ll have the opportunity to build a wide knowledge base.

As you progress through the course, you’ll study how to assess, advise and treat individuals with a variety of conditions including spinal and joint problems, respiratory difficulties, neurological problems, and those recovering from strokes and other chronic conditions, accidents and operations. Working in our physiotherapy practical rooms and biomechanics laboratory, you’ll have the opportunity to practise your skills in massage, joint manipulation and hot and cold treatments, as well as electrotherapy, movement analysis and rehabilitation. Crucially, you’ll also get the chance to benefit from our excellent links with local healthcare providers and sports clubs through undertaking placements. Podiatrists are allied healthcare professionals who assess and treat the lower limb and foot. On our Podiatry BSc(Hons) you’ll have the opportunity to build the knowledge and hands-on skills you need whilst learning in specialist clinical facilities. We aim to give you the skills to improve the mobility and quality of life of your patients. As a qualified podiatrist, you could work in a number of specialist areas with people of all ages including musculoskeletal podiatry, sports injuries, biomechanics and gait assessment, orthotics and nail surgery. Your work could include the management of foot health, routine care, specialist wound care and minor operative procedures. You could also contribute to the wellbeing of patients with diabetes, rheumatism, vascular or neurological disorders. During the course, we’ll support you to get to grips with the theory of podiatry and practise the hands-on skills you’ll need to pursue a successful career. You’ll have the

opportunity to get vital experience using our fully equipped on-site Podiatry Clinic, surgical theatre suite, biomechanics gait analysis equipment and orthotics laboratory. Clinical placements will also form part of your studies, so you can put what you’ve learnt to the test in the real world. Practicing podiatrists often work as part of a multidisciplinary team. The course helps to prepare you for this, as you’ll take part in interprofessional learning alongside physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nursing students. You’ll also have the opportunity to qualify with a certificate in local anaesthesia and prescription only medicines (POMS) annotation. Many podiatrists undertake further training to become a Podiatric Surgeon or Forensic Podiatrist. Whilst others set up their own consultancies, so if you’re looking for a career in healthcare working independently and developing your entrepreneurial skills, then podiatry could be a good choice for you.

Working closely with local authority partners you’ll be exposed to employment opportunities and post-qualifying social work progression pathways. Lewis Nurney

Podiatry BSc(Hons)

“When I was younger I always wanted to become a Formula 1 Driver, travelling around the world to different countries, however I soon realised this wasn’t a realistic career choice for me and decided to follow my interest in healthcare,” says Lewis Nurney from Barnsley. Podiatry was a profession that Lewis was unaware of until he had a football injury and was referred to a podiatrist by his GP. “The podiatrist made me a custom pair of orthotics for my football boots which worked fantastically, as through wearing these and doing some exercise my problem was fixed. I found this really interesting and on my follow up appointment I asked if I could shadow the podiatrist whilst I was at college in order to find out more and gain some work experience.”

My goal is to study the Theory of Podiatric Surgery MSc and eventually become a podiatric surgeon.

Lewis found the work experience very beneficial, as he comments “I was shown the vast scope of practice within podiatry and the rewarding career prospects, which confirmed this was the career pathway I wanted to focus on.” He is surprised how much he has developed whilst studying on the Podiatry BSc(Hons) at Huddersfield, “The experiences I have had so far will shape my career and have really helped me to develop as a person. The atmosphere at the University is brilliant and the support available from lecturers and academic skills teams is invaluable.” In the future Lewis would like to specialise in podiatric surgery “My goal is to study the Theory of Podiatric Surgery MSc and eventually become a podiatric surgeon. I know this is a long and tough process but I feel I am determined and willing to put in the work in order to achieve my goal.”

Sheena Miller

Senior Lecturer and Field Leader for Learning Disability Nursing

“I wanted to be a vet, as I’ve always loved animals,” says Sheena recalling her childhood dreams. Sheena who is from Halifax first developed a passion for helping and working with people whilst undertaking a degree in Psychology. “During my degree I really enjoyed the modules about behaviour. I then decided to take my interest further and study Learning Disability Nursing at Huddersfield, which is the best decision I ever made.”

Learning disability nursing is such a vital profession to the people who use it.

After graduating in 1999, Sheena then gained experience working with a wide range of people with all sorts of needs in nursing home and community settings, through roles with St Anne’s Community Services and the NHS. In 2006 Sheena returned to the University to work as a Lecturer Practitioner and after six months became a full-time member of the lecturing team for Learning Disability Nursing. “I find the topics we cover on the course to be fascinating and particularly enjoy discussing equality, social justice and social inclusion. Learning disability nursing is such a vital profession to the people who use it, and while I loved working as a nurse, I always felt as though I could only change the world for one person at a time. In education, I have the opportunity to influence a generation of nurses who can all change the world for many people.”
