We’ll give you the chance to shape your studies to your interests, whether that’s the medieval period, the Tudor era or modern European history. Our modules are geographically diverse too. And you can combine History with Economics, English Literature, English Language, Politics or Film to cast a whole new light on what you’re studying. We make sure the world of work is never far away. You’ll take a five-week work-related project in Year 2. Plus you could choose to take a year-long optional placement on our History BA(Hons). It’s a great way to build up your skills and your contacts too. Previous placement students have worked for organisations such as the Royal Armouries Museum and Kirklees TV. You might be surprised by just how creative our History courses are, with opportunities to design exhibitions or podcasts on your subject. From the Crusades to the First World War, and from regicide to revolution, our courses give you the chance to choose your pathway according to your interests. Perhaps you want to study the history of a particular country, or take an international view to see patterns and connections between national stories. During your studies you’ll be able to engage with a range of approaches to history, and investigate the periods that fascinate and inspire you. We have a friendly, hands-on approach to delivering our courses. All of our modules aim to equip you with the skills that employers are looking for: good communication and analytical skills, independent and team working, and problem solving. Previous students have gone on to work in a range of interesting places like the British Library, West Yorkshire Police, The Department for Education and Emerald Group Publishing.

We never forget that your studies should lead on to a rewarding career, so we make sure the real world is never far away. The five-week work-related project in Year 2 and the year-long optional placement after the second year both provide the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience, insight into your chosen career and open up your graduate employment prospects. Previous placement students have worked for organisations such as the National Coal Mining Museum, Opera North, Barclays Group Archive, the Isle of Man Motor Museum and West Yorkshire Archives. Our History course is really creative too. You could have the chance to design a marketing pitch for a historical film, or an interactive soundwalk. There are opportunities to study abroad, and explore our innovative award-winning archive at Heritage Quay. You could also join the Student History Society, and organise trips, debates and social events.

While you’re here you could build up some very useful and transferable skills: to analyse and communicate; to put together a convincing argument; to gain the self discipline to work on your own; and to work with others to assess challenges and respond to them. You can build up the skills that employers are looking for. On the Politics side of the course, we’ll encourage you to roll up your sleeves and get truly involved. Of course, we’ll look at the theory behind the politics, but then we’ll give you the chance to apply it in the working environment, with an invaluable work placement in your chosen field.

From working for an MP to helping at a non-governmental organisation (NGO), educational institution or media outlet, you’ll be able to gain some practical experience in a professional setting in the second year of your course. You’ll also gain a critical understanding of political processes and institutions, focusing specifically on British politics. You could look at political parties, leadership, policy-making and elections, as well as political philosophy and global political issues. Then, in your second and third years, you can choose from a range of specialist modules to gain a deeper understanding of the aspects of your subject that interest you the most. While you’re studying you can get involved in a range of extra-curricular activities. From time to time we have guest lecturers such as MPs and political figures, and we also often hold student debates and encourage students to get involved with political blogs. You could also join the Student Politics Society to get really immersed in your subject and gain practical experience.

History and English Language BA(Hons)

For the History side of the course, you’ll have the opportunity to shape your studies to your interests. Our modules are historically and geographically diverse, so you can pick the periods and places that fascinate you the most. You’ll be able to engage with a range of approaches to history, and work with primary source materials too. While you’re here you could build up some very useful and transferable skills: to analyse and communicate; to put together a convincing argument; to gain the self-discipline to work on your own; and to work with others to assess challenges and respond to them. You can build up the skills that employers are looking for. In your English Language studies, you’ll be introduced to the basic concepts and theory of different branches of linguistics, like phonetics and morphology. We’ll also encourage you to study the role of language in society and how it helps humans understand things: how we acquire it, the way it changes, and the way it forms an array of ways to communicate.

We’ll carry out conversation analysis, sociolinguistics and stylistics to get under the surface of the spoken or written word and understand more about what’s really going on. In each year of your course you’ll be able to choose option modules to focus on topics that interest you. In your second year you’ll go on a work placement, which is designed to enhance your skills ready for employment and to help you gain useful contacts in your chosen field. We also offer innovative assessments for both subjects in your course, so you could find yourself analysing children’s speech development, pitching an idea for a historical video game or creating a visitor trail for a national museum. By taking a creative approach, we give you the chance to develop your skills and look at your subjects in a new and inspiring way.

Economics and History BA(Hons)

This course will set you up with core skills in both History and Economics, which you’ll follow through a range of optional modules, enabling you to pick what suits your interests. You’ll learn how to combine historical context with current awareness of major global trends and challenges, and evaluate evidence of various kinds.

In your second year you’ll undertake a work-related project, and have the chance to take a year-long optional placement in your third year. These experiences will help you develop the workplace knowledge that employers are looking for, and start building those all-important networks in your chosen field.

Your choices on the History side are historically and geographically diverse, and you can focus on what fascinates you the most. You’ll be able to explore the cultural, social and political impact of events and eras, in Britain, Europe and across the world, from medieval to modern times. You’ll get to grips with a wide range of approaches to history, and get hands on experience with primary sources.

Communication and analysis are at the heart of both Economics and History, and it is precisely these skills which our creative teaching and learning will foster in you. We have a friendly, hands-on approach to delivering our courses, involving you in independent and team work, problem solving and digital literacy.

In your Economics studies, we’ll introduce you to the basics of economics, at both macro and micro levels. You’ll then apply the concepts you have learned to contemporary social, economic and historical problems, such as poverty reduction and inequality measurement, high unemployment and rising pollution. Hopefully you’ll figure out some of the solutions too. * Whilst this is a new course and therefore there are no graduate statistics available, 90-95% of graduates from courses in these subject areas at Huddersfield go on to work and/or further study within six months of graduating (Destinations of Leavers Survey 2015/16).

A degree in Economics and History offers so many varied opportunities for careers, for example in banking and finance, teaching, economics and management consultancy, government, work in developing countries, the media and accountancy to name just a few.

English Literature and History BA(Hons)

Our English Literature course spans hundreds of years of inspiration, from the English Renaissance of the 16th century right up to the present day. So whether you love Jacobean drama or contemporary poetry, you’ll be able to indulge your tastes and hopefully gain some new ones too. Your choices on the History side of your degree are equally wide ranging. We’ll cover the cultural, social, historical and political impact of events and eras that have had a huge impact on today’s civilisation. Along the way you’ll be able to study conflicts, empires, upheavals and more, from the medieval period right through to contemporary society. The course is an equal mixture of both subjects. In your first year in History you’ll have the chance to learn more about early medieval Europe and 20th-century Britain. And in your Literature modules you’ll start looking at a wide range of literature, as well as literary criticism and theory.

The topics we cover aren’t just exciting and rewarding to study, they could help you develop some transferable skills that employers are looking for as well. You could go on to a career in fields such as teaching, librarianship, archives, the media, the voluntary sector, PR, law and accountancy. In your second year, you’ll also have the opportunity to take a five-week placement. Recent graduates have taken placements at Pen and Sword Books, Wilsons Solicitors, Kirklees Library Service, West Yorkshire Archives Service and The Royal Armouries Museum. While you’re studying you can also take part in extra-curricular activities. You could join the Student History Society and enjoy trips or social events, or attend stimulating talks by guest speakers in Literature.

Film Studies and History BA(Hons)

On your course you’ll be able to choose from a range of optional modules in both Film and History. We aim to give you a wide spectrum of topics to consider, so you can build up a strong foundation in both subjects, before moving on to what really fascinates you. Studying Film, we’ll look at a wide range of cinematic forms. From popular cinema through to challenging avant-garde works, you’ll become familiar with a rich and varied selection of genres. We’ll also look at topics like national cinemas and the work of individual filmmakers. You could look at adaptation, and how great works of literature are adapted to the big screen. Screenwriting, music and performance are all also part of the curriculum.

With History, we’ll give you the chance to shape your studies to your interests. Our modules are historically and geographically diverse, so you can pick the periods and places that interest you the most. Where we can we’ll work with primary source materials, and give you all the support you need during your studies. While you’re here you could build up some very useful and transferable skills: to analyse and communicate; to put together a convincing argument; to gain the self discipline to work on your own; and to work with others to assess challenges and solve them. These are all vital skills that employers are looking for, and you could develop them on this course, while studying subjects that fascinate you.

But it’s not all theory. We’ll also give you the chance to try your hand at filmmaking too. If you choose one of our documentary filmmaking modules you could get behind the camera and start exploring.

Meet our staff

Sharing her passion for history

Dr Sarah Bastow Subject Leader, History

Dr Sarah Bastow is the subject area leader for History. Sarah teaches on a range of history courses, but is a specialist in the early modern era. She has always loved history and her passion for it grew stronger throughout her studies as an undergraduate. “My research interests are in the field of religious history of England in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. I have published work on religion in the north of England, early modern masculinity and the importance of reputation in early modern society.” Sarah says, “I love that I get to share my enthusiasm for history with students who have the same passion.” The highlight of the academic year is seeing students achieve their goals. The graduation ceremonies are great and “I really enjoy seeing our students receive their degrees at the end of their studies, happy and excited about the future.” So, why should people choose to study history at Huddersfield? According to Sarah, “Our academic standards are so strong in the History department and we really focus on preparing our students for their future careers – all the staff love what we do and this makes it a great place to work and study.”

I love that I get to share my enthusiasm for history with students who have the same passion.

My student journey so far

Claire Hudson History BA(Hons)

“The course covers a wide variety of time periods and it was nice to be able to choose which areas of history I wanted to specialise in,” explains Claire. The thing Claire values the most however, is the people. “My lecturers make the subject what it is. They are really approachable and genuinely want you to do your best. They provide prompt feedback allowing you to respond and improve your grades.” She adds, “We also benefit from their research activity which they bring into the classroom. We get a good mix of lectures, seminars, workshops and interactive sessions.” Claire has made the most of the work experience opportunities. “In the ‘Hands on History’ module I worked on a project called ‘Geography of the Mind’ which was put on display at The Mental Health Museum in Wakefield to be viewed by the public.” For her work placement Claire secured a role at Kirklees Local TV. “I was asked to produce a video on a study of my choice and I chose Slaithwaite Brass Band. I created all the content, directed, produced, and consulted on the editing of the video which was circulated on social media and the TV station’s website.” This has helped shaped Claire’s future plans. “After possibly completing a Master’s in History, I would love to produce history material for TV.” Claire has also become a student ambassador. When asked why, she replied: “I have enjoyed my time here so much I wanted to share my enthusiasm and encourage people to come and have the same experience.”
