Law (Exempting) Master of Law and Practice (MLP), incorporating LLB(Hons) The Master of Law and Practice (MLP) is an exciting Master’s degree that provides a clear route to professional qualification. The degree gives you an exemption from the Legal Practice Course (LPC), which is the second vocational stage of training you need to qualify as a solicitor, so it could see you well on your way to your chosen profession. The four-year Master of Law and Practice (MLP) course helps you meet all the academic requirements before going on to start your legal training, so once you graduate successfully, you can move on to train directly with a legal firm.
MLP Route The four year MLP route gives you exemption from the Legal Practice Course (LPC), the second academic stage of training required for qualification as a solicitor.
By studying law in this way, you’ll be able to access tuition fee loans and other financial support, so you won’t have to fund a separate LPC course on top of your LLB(Hons). That could save you quite a sum, and make all the difference when you’re trying to get established in your legal career. We keep things flexible. After your second year if you decide you’d rather do the three-year LLB(Hons) then that’s fine. Pass your LLB(Hons) and you’ll have a law degree that qualifies you to go on to train as a solicitor or barrister. To do that, you’ll have to complete a separate professional practice course, as well as a training contract or pupillage. Whatever you choose to do, our Partners in Law scheme is a pretty unique service that could give you all the support you need. We can provide you with networking, mentoring and training opportunities through our links with regional and internationally renowned legal firms.

“Studying Law at the University of Huddersfield not only allowed me to obtain the academic knowledge required when working within the legal profession, but also allowed me to also develop invaluable practical skills that have proved crucial in my work as a Trainee solicitor and a Paralegal for Pinsent Masons. The tutors cannot do enough for you and are always available to offer any required help or support.”

My student journey so far
Megan Bedford
Law (Exempting) Master of Law and Practice (MLP), incorporating LLB(Hons)
“I grew up in Leeds and I wanted the opportunity to move away from home and live by myself. “The transition from being at home to becoming independent was much easier than I thought. I really enjoyed living at Storthes Hall in my first year. It was what you’d expect from your time at uni and more. I had such a great time going to student events and living in a student village. I met some of my best friends here and I expect them to be friends for life.
I’ve learned so much during my time here and I was surprised at how much support I was given.
“From a young age I’d always thought about having a career in law. I went on to study law at A level. I really enjoyed it and it made me certain that it’s what I want to do. “Huddersfield was one of the best universities for the course I wanted to study as it offers the Master’s in Law practice degree and I won’t have to do a separate LPC. I’ve learned so much during my time here and I was surprised at how much support I was given. “After I graduate, I hope to gain a training contract as a conveyancer and build my career as a solicitor.”

Meet our staff
My biggest achievement in my career is qualifying as a solicitor
Natalie Gibson Senior Lecturer, Law “When I was younger, I knew that I wanted to be a solicitor one day. This was cemented when I secured work experience at the Huddersfield firm Holroyd & Co Solicitors, during my time at Greenhead College. I went on to train as a solicitor with this firm, immediately after completing my degree and Legal Practice Course at the University of Huddersfield. “I have lived in Huddersfield my whole life. I studied for my LLB degree, Legal Practice Course, and LLM at the University and I am currently undertaking my PhD here. Following changes to legal aid funding in family law cases in 2014, I made the decision to shift from practice to academia and it has been the best decision I have ever made.
Without a doubt, it is the time I get to spend with my students that I enjoy the most.
“My most memorable experience has been my role as the Honorary Secretary for the Huddersfield & Dewsbury Incorporated Law Society. This role not only allows me to maintain links with the local legal profession, but also provides me with the opportunity to organise the Law Society Dinner. The dinner is attended by University staff and students, as well as local practitioners, many of whom are our alumni. “Without a doubt, it is the time I get to spend with my students that I enjoy the most. Seeing them progress throughout the course and graduation, and then on to employment, is tremendously rewarding. It is particularly pleasing when students who have studied my family law modules go on to practice in that specialism. “My biggest achievement in my career is qualifying as a solicitor.”
