Every product, service and activity that you may consume and enjoy in your lifetime will have a supply chain and will rely on logistics and transportation to ensure customer satisfaction. This includes the food we eat, our journey to work and the electronic equipment we use for work and play. A wide range of knowledge, skills and experience is required for managers to work successfully in this sector and through our courses we aim to give you a thorough understanding of the commercial activity of transporting goods to customers. You’ll study core subjects like finance, economics, HR management, marketing and strategic management as well as choose your own specialist areas, like aviation, purchasing and supply, manufacturing operations, strategic supply chain management, project management, passenger transport or retail logistics. Many of your lecturers have worked in the commercial world. In the department there’s a range of experience across world-leading companies like American Express, IBM, Tibbett & Britten, DHL, Wincanton, National Police Air Services, Argos, Hallmark Cards and Unilever.
You can choose from a range of courses covering key areas in this dynamic sector. Each one focuses on business management but with an added insight into particular elements, such as air transport, transport, logistics operations or supply chain strategy. Choose Transport and Logistics if you’d like to study the management of the flow of people or goods and services, or Supply Chain Management if you’d like to understand how raw materials end up being goods on our shelves, and how mankind can sustainably reuse products that have been discarded. The emphasis is on giving you a chance to secure a great career. That’s why we have also developed two courses in partnership with key companies within the industry. Air Transport and Logistics Management BSc(Hons)
We live in a globalised world where people travel further and more often for business and for pleasure. That places more and more demand on airlines. The course will give you the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills required for an exciting and challenging career in airlines, air freight, freight forwarders, express couriers and general logistics or supply chain management. You’ll study core subjects like finance, economics, HR management, marketing and strategic management. We’ll also look at the specialist knowledge required for a career in the various parts of the air industry. So you can begin to shape your own course and create your ideal career path. We focus on real-world practice and look at real examples of how businesses do it. Thanks to our contacts, you’ll be able to hear some great guest lectures, go on site visits and also have the chance to take work placement opportunities. Transport and Logistics Management BSc(Hons)
Transport is the lifeblood of successful economies. Our journey to work, business-related travel and the movement of goods require safe, efficient and reliable transport. Modes used include air, sea, rail, road and pipeline whilst airports, ports, rail and bus terminuses, warehouses and distribution centres act as nodes within transport networks. Transport and logistics managers aim to make sure that goods can flow successfully through the supply chain. Other equally important players in a business are the logistics analysts, customer service managers and purchasing managers. Transport operators ensure that our rail, bus and coach services are run safely, efficiently and on time. The course aims to give you a thorough grounding in all aspects of transport, logistics and distribution services. We’ll touch on a varied range
of sectors, including train operators, bus and coach companies, third party logistics operators, consultancies and even the armed forces. We’ll also get you looking at the operational and economic aspects, including passenger transport. We’ve developed a large number of contacts in the industry like Cross-Country Trains, DHL and Royal Mail. You’ll have the chance to hear some inspiring guest lectures, or go on site visits. But most importantly, you’ll have the opportunity to take an optional work placement with a business in the transport and logistics industry. “I was born in Hungary and moved to the UK when I was 13. I went to school in Bristol before moving to university. Having studied business at A Level, I knew I wanted to get a degree in this area. Logistics appealed to me because it’s a very dynamic industry with excellent employment opportunities. “Huddersfield offers the best logistics courses in the country and once I’d spoken to the lecturers it was clear to me that it would be be my first choice. “When I moved to Huddersfield I knew nobody, but it was surprising how easy it is to fit in and find new friends.

Dr Nick Hubbard Principal Lecturer, Logistics, Transport and Supply Chain Management “When I was younger I didn’t really have an idea of what I wanted to do but I had a keen interest in Geography so that’s what I studied at university. I was particularly interested in environmental geography which combines physical and human geography and concerns the interactions between the environment and humans. This led on to a fascination with tourism and I secured an MPhil scholarship from the English Tourist Board to undertake research into the occupancy performance of hotels in Yorkshire and Humberside.
It is really satisfying when you witness students click with something they have been struggling with. “I originally came to work at the University in 1987 and this is where my passion has extended into the field of transport and logistics. I have taught in several countries, including Denmark, Egypt, Hong Kong, Hungary, Norway and Malaysia and I am a long standing member of the European Forum of Logistics Education and a committee member of the Logistics Research Network. “I love teaching and for me it is all about getting your message across in a lively and engaging way. It is really satisfying when you witness students click with something they have been struggling with.”
