Perhaps you’re inspired by awesome feats of engineering, or you’ve got a knack for working out what things do, and their potential. Engineering is all about rising to a challenge with an innovative and ingenious solution. So if you want to invent new ways of doing things, and work on some amazing projects, we’ll give you the chance to succeed.
Study with us I’m with such likeminded people and I’ve made friends for life. I will keep in touch with the staff too and probably ask them for advice when I’m in industry. Ryan Day, Mechanical Engineering MEng

Get the basics right and everything else will follow. That’s why our 3-5 year courses start with the foundations of engineering principles. In Year 1 we give you the support to get to grips with the fundamentals so you can go on to your specialist area with confidence. From Year 2 onwards you’ll specialise in your chosen field: energy, automotive, mechanical: so much is possible and we support you in the areas that you’re passionate about. We offer four course levels: • MEng – Integrated Master’s course lasting four years (five with a placement year). Extends your undergraduate studies to Master’s level within a single course. • BEng(Hons) – Bachelor’s degree course lasting three years (four with a placement year). • Top-up – for those who’ve already completed two years of Higher Education study in a related subject.
The University has strong links with industry through collaborative projects and there’s the opportunity for you to develop your own links by applying for a year in industry. So you could build up the skills – and the contacts – you might need in the future. Throughout your time with us you’ll be studying in state-of-the-art facilities; you’ll have access to design and analysis software, an advanced automotive laboratory with vehicle and engine test facilities, a railway locomotive test facility and a wind tunnel. All as used by the professionals. You’ll also have the chance to work with students from other engineering disciplines on projects – like the Institute of Mechanical Engineers Railway Challenge and Formula Student competitions. Previous graduates have gone on to work for companies like Jaguar Landrover, BAE Systems, Weir Power & Industrial, BP and Cummins Turbo Technologies.** Who knows where you could end up? *Engineering UK 2017 report.
• Foundation Year – preparation year for undergraduate study.

Engineering Foundation Year leading to a BEng(Hons) Key information: UCAS code: H108 Duration: year 0 of a 4-5 year degree Entry requirements: CC at A Level MPP at BTEC 64 UCAS points from a combination of Level 3 qualifications including one A Level pass Additional criteria: GCSE Maths at grade 5 or above, or grade C or above if awarded under the previous GCSE grading scheme
This Foundation Year has been designed to give you an excellent route into studying engineering. Perhaps you’re fascinated by engineering, but have never formally studied the subject. Or you may have decided on a career change. It could also be ideal if you do not have the usual academic qualifications to study at degree level. The Foundation Year isn’t a standalone course, but makes up the first year of your studies leading to a BEng or MEng degree in our Electronic or Mechanical Engineering course suites at Huddersfield. To go on to a degree, you must gain an average mark of 50%, and have passed each component of your Foundation Year.
On the Foundation Year you’ll have the chance to develop the academic knowledge and study skills you need to study at university. We’ll explore mathematics and engineering science, and we’ll also introduce you to electronic, electrical and mechanical engineering. By looking at each discipline in turn, we could help you decide which degree is right for you. During your studies you’ll have the chance to develop a range of transferable skills, including research, report writing and presentations. All these skills could prove useful in any career.
Scholarships Eligible Engineering Foundation Year students can get scholarships of up to £1000 - see hud.ac/ EFYscholarship for details.
Kris Entwistle graduated from Mechanical Engineering BEng(Hons) in 2015 and is now a Junior Aerodynamic Designer at Williams F1. “I hugely recommend the foundation year. I gained a good understanding of basic engineering principles and it even gave me an advantage on others in some areas, such as CAD and report writing. I had the opportunity to sample the various disciplines to decide on the right career path. When I finished the year, I went on to complete the BEng course.” For detailed course and employability information, including full entry requirements, please visit courses.hud.ac.uk

My student journey so far
Charlotte Pattison Mechanical Engineering BEng(Hons) “I grew up in Newcastle, so I knew I wanted to stay up north, partly because the people are so friendly and welcoming, and Huddersfield seemed to fit with me. I knew I wanted to go somewhere that felt homely and not too busy, and that’s one of the reasons I chose Huddersfield. “At school I loved maths and physics, and I wanted to continue to study these topics at uni, so Mechanical Engineering seemed like a perfect fit. It allowed me to expand in both these areas, whilst also expanding my technical knowledge in many other ways that I wouldn’t have gotten had I only studied maths or physics.
Being on placement helped me to realise that everything I’ve learnt on the course is so relevant and useful, so it’s great to know when I get a job, I’ll already have the knowledge I need. “After my first year I was awarded the IMechE Best Student Certificate, which I was so honoured to get. When I collected the award, many other students from other years and engineering courses were also getting awards, and it was great to see that the university recognises hard work and dedication. The award really helped to build my confidence in my own abilities, and gave me motivation to try just as hard during the rest of my course. “During my third year I went on placement at Baker Hughes, a GE Company (formally GE Oil & Gas). It was a brilliant experience because I was able to see how the theory we learnt at university fit into the practical engineering world. My favourite thing about my placement was being able to learn and experience the ‘real world’ and being able to work on real projects. I contributed to teamwork and even led a few projects myself, which was a great confidence booster! “After uni I hope to get a graduate job as an engineer in a design or project specific role. I plan to achieve chartered status in the near future, and to eventually become an engineering manager.” To hear Charlotte talk about her student journey visit hud.ac/profiles

Meet our staff Loves to share her passion for maths with her students
Ann Smith Senior Lecturer
“When I was younger I wanted to be an author as I loved reading then and now, I enjoyed discovering and going on adventures in books and real-life! “I teach first year maths and my interest in the subject started really early, it was always one of my favourite subjects alongside English and French. So my interests were quite broad but I loved maths the most, I even took additional maths in School! Unlike most people, the introduction of Algebra made maths more interesting for me. It was the fact there are puzzles to solve with definite answers, unlike writing an essay where the debate is interesting but you’re never quite sure if you’ve done enough.
It’s great seeing how students gain in confidence throughout their course and how they blossom and develop and I feel so proud watching them graduate. “Straight from sixth form I went to study maths at university. I loved my course and being a student, but when I graduated I had no idea what I wanted to do! Needing a break from academia I worked for the Post Office for a while until I realised I wanted to work in education teaching adults, so I enrolled for my teaching qualification. I did teaching practice locally at Kirklees College, and I also spent the Summer working at a college in Neubrandenburg, Germany. This wasn’t long after the Berlin Wall had fallen so it was a fascinating place to be. “After starting teaching at Huddersfield I discovered my passion for statistics. I completed my Master’s qualification distance learning shortly after I had my second child. My Master’s project focussed on near patient testing of blood glucose levels which was a particularly interesting medical application. Currently I am studying for my PhD in the area of condition monitoring, specifically detecting and diagnosing faults in mechanical processes – both applications using statistics and that’s the beauty of statistics, it’s so exciting and can be applied to a variety of different areas. “I love meeting our students and the diversity of them, seeing them grow, helping them through the process. Having experienced studying at all different points in my life – direct from school, studying whilst having children, studying as a single mum and as a mature student, I feel I can really empathise with our students. “One of my lasting memories from my time here is the resourcefulness and humour of the HUD Engineering Society members baking and selling cakes to make up the shortfall for a trip to Jaguar Land Rover.”
