Welcome to Pharmacy Welcome to Pharmacy here at the University of Huddersfield. We’re a dynamic and innovative teaching and research environment within the School of Applied Sciences. You could join our transatlantic exchange programme with Wilkes School of Pharmacy in Pennsylvania.**

If you’ve already decided that you might like a career in pharmacy or health related area, our Pharmacy MPharm degree could give you the skills and experience you need to create the future you’re looking for. Our Pharmacy MPharm degree gives you the chance to gain a strong foundation in the pharmaceutical sciences, and the knowledge and skills to support you in a career in pharmacy. Accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), we combine science and professional practice over the whole four years of the course. Once you’ve finished the four years of your MPharm degree, you then have to do a preregistration year before you can register as a Pharmacist. We’ll help you apply for places where you can do your pre-registration, and let you know about other options too. On our Pharmacy MPharm course you’ll benefit from a series of compulsory work placements.

So if you want to experience working in different healthcare settings, including hospital or community based pharmacies, or GP surgeries, we’ll give you all the chances you need, every single year. You could go far. As far as the USA in fact, thanks to our transatlantic exchange with Wilkes School of Pharmacy in Pennsylvania.** Pharmacy offers a variety of interesting careers. Pharmacists can work in a range of positions across the various sectors within pharmacy including community, primary care, hospitals and industry. Interested in learning all about how drugs work to fight diseases? Want to play your part in discovering new treatments in a fast-paced industry responding to a rapidly changing world? Our Pharmacology BSc(Hons) course offers an advanced programme of learning designed to give you the solid grounding you need to set off on your chosen career path, whether it’s in pharmaceutical industries, the health sector or research.

*Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching; research degrees applies to those on contracts of more than half-time. **There are four places available each year on the exchange programme with Wilkes School of Pharmacy; selection is by interview with those who express an interest. If successful, you would need to cover the costs of your three week trip, which in recent years has been approximately £1500 per student.

Chemistry A Level is essential. If you’re not studying Biology, then Maths or Physics are accepted but must be high grades ie. AAB would be expected. Offers based on 3 A Level subjects in the region of AAB/ABB and are influenced by subjects being studied, predicted grades and performance at a selection day. DDD at BTEC (not inc. Early Years) acceptable only when combined with other Science related qualifications. Accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), our Pharmacy MPharm degree is designed to offer a varied learning experience while giving you the chance to gain a strong foundation in the pharmaceutical sciences. So by learning with us, you’ll be able to combine studying the theory of science with developing and trying out the practical and professional skills you’ll need to launch your career.

Throughout this four-year course, you’ll be focusing firmly on medicines and patients. As you progress, you’ll have the chance to get to grips with all aspects of the profession, from understanding the development and design of drugs to investigating the role of pharmacists in society. While you’re here, you’ll be able to work in our formulation laboratory where medicines are made. Beyond the lab, we also help you build your understanding of how the work you do will have a real impact on people. By working with prescriptions and thinking about patients right from the start, you’ll be able to focus on the end goal of your studies and prepare for scenarios you’re likely to come across as you take your first steps as a healthcare professional.

Key information: UCAS code: B2C1 Duration: 3 years full-time 4 years inc. placement year

On this course, you’ll be looking at all aspects of pharmacology including neurodegenerative diseases and other conditions affecting ageing populations, as well as infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV-AIDS. You’ll also have the chance to study topics around public health and increase your understanding of emerging pathogens and those that are becoming resistant to antibiotics. In short, you could come away from the course with a wide knowledge and the practical skills to kick-start a fulfilling career.

Entry requirements: BBC** at A Level inc. a min. grade B in Chemistry, or a grade C in Chemistry plus a grade B in another relevant Science subject. DMM at BTEC in Applied Science. Alternatively a BTEC Health and Social Care is acceptable but must be accompanied by another Science A Level at a min. grade C. 112 UCAS points from a combination of Level 3 qualifications inc. a min. grade B in Chemistry, or a grade C in Chemistry plus a grade B in another relevant Science subject.

BSc(Hons)

Studying for your Pharmacology BSc(Hons) degree with us, you’ll be guided by doctoral-level teaching

staff on a modular course designed to help you follow your interests and tailor your degree to suit your career aspirations. Alongside building your technical and scientific knowledge, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your deductive, analytical and communication skills – all vital when you venture out into the real world. On top of that, there’s the chance to gain hands-on experience in our modern biological sciences labs using the kind of instrumentation you’ll find in industry. And if you want to get even more insight and up-to-the-minute experience, you can opt to do a work placement for the duration of your third year.

Science Extended Degree

leading to a BSc(Hons) degree

MMP at BTEC. This does not need to be in a technical or Science subject. 80 UCAS points from a combination of Level 3 qualifications. As part of the selection process applicants are normally required to complete an aptitude test and interview.

* Progression onto Chemical Engineering BEng(Hons) is also dependent on achieving a minimum pass mark of 60% in the Foundation Maths module. Progression onto Chemical Engineering MEng is also dependent on achieving a minimum pass mark of 60% in the Foundation Maths module, plus an overall pass mark of at least 70%. ** Progression onto Pharmacy MPharm is dependent on meeting stringent performance levels in the Science Extended Degree. You must pass all six modules with an overall pass mark of at least 70%. Plus at least 70% in the Chemistry in Action module and 70% on the maths element of the Foundation Maths module. You must also successfully undertake an interview with the Pharmacy admissions staff.

If you don’t have the appropriate qualifications for direct entry to one of our science based degrees, you can apply to our Science Extended Degree. Getting stuck into the four main disciplines of biology, chemistry, maths and physics, you’ll have the chance to get a grounding in the scientific knowledge you’ll need no matter which route you eventually decide to take. But it’s not just about theory here. Our professional, dedicated and friendly staff are on hand to help reshape the way you learn, challenge you to rethink your own practices and equip you with the skills that will be the foundations for your further studies. Taught through lectures, tutorials and laboratory practicals in our modern

facilities, you’ll get the benefit of the staff’s expertise in both academia and industry. Optional drop-in sessions offer a great opportunity for you to strengthen your knowledge and make sure you’ve got a clear understanding of all the material as you go along. On successful completion of this year (you must pass all six modules), you’ll be able to start the first year of your degree in the subject areas of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering*, Forensic Science or Pharmacy.**

Jamie Higgins Pharmacy MPharm

“I’m from Huddersfield and was keen to stay here due to my athletic background as a race walker for team GB. Since I was about 14 I’ve wanted to do something linked with the use of medicine, and how this helps people, and chemistry. I found out about pharmacy as a potential career when I was about 16 from a placement I went on at my local community pharmacy. It really interested me and I immediately started researching universities that offered pharmacy courses.

I feel prepared for the workplace and I’m coached on how to be professional right from the start of the course.

“I attended several interviews and open days at other universities, but when I saw the facilities here and met the staff, I immediately chose Huddersfield. I get the support I need as an individual as well as being positively encouraged to be an independent learner. I like that in the lectures, the skills and training offered are not just the theory, but cover the wider practical and professional skills required to help me be successful in my career. “My most memorable event so far has been my dispensing exams, where my professional practical skills were assessed in timed tests. Also the role-playing I’ve done as preparation has really helped my communications skills when dealing with different patient and prescription scenarios. “After my degree I’d like to complete my pre-registration training in a hospital. I’d like to progress through a hospital pharmacy career and gain a diploma in clinical pharmacy. I’m interested in specialising in oncology and anti-cancer agents.”

My student journey so far

Danielle Brown Pharmacy MPharm “I went to high school near York before coming to the University of Huddersfield. I was drawn to Huddersfield by the friendly staff and close knit atmosphere, and felt instantly part of that from day one and even before when I came to the Open Day. I’d already looked around several other university pharmacy courses and I’d liked a couple, but as soon as I came to Huddersfield I knew this was where I wanted to study. I could tell the staff were interested in knowing me as a person and I was going to be supported as an individual in all aspects of my studies.

I know people from all four years of the course and the lecturers really care about you doing well. “I’ve always wanted to be in a profession where I could help people and have wanted to be a Pharmacist since I was about 14. Being a Pharmacist will help me to combine my passion for science in a profession where I can help people. Plus, I’ll be in a career where there are opportunities for clear progression routes and I can constantly improve myself. “My most memorable event at University so far has been my placement at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania, USA. I gained new knowledge and an insight into pharmacy practice in another country and also made new friends. It’s been such an inspiring and valuable experience. “I plan to pursue a career in hospital pharmacy as I like the clinical aspect of it and the breadth of patient contact. Dr Kofi Asare-Addo Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutics “I’ve always enjoyed chemistry and been interested in how drugs work, so at university I studied pharmaceutical science. I’m originally from Ghana and went to college and university here in the UK. I joined the University of Huddersfield in 2012, upon completing my PhD as a Research Assistant, and since 2014 I’ve been a Lecturer in Pharmaceutics.

What I enjoy the most about teaching my subject is when my students are really engaged with their learning. “Whilst studying for my undergraduate degree I really enjoyed the pharmaceutics aspect of it. I also spent time in a secondary school and summer schools where I helped to teach science and maths. I realised that I enjoyed teaching and helping students to learn, so I decided to a make a career out of it. One of the reasons I studied and completed my PhD in Pharmacy was to help me in my career as a Lecturer in Higher Education. “What I enjoy the most about teaching my subject is when my students are really engaged with their learning. I try to incorporate my research into my teaching as much as possible, including taking small experiments into the classroom. This helps my students to see the practical applications of what I teach them. “One of my most memorable events at Huddersfield was when we were complimented on the quality of students that we have at the University. It made me really proud to be a part of the team here.”
