The UK’s only University where all our permanent teaching staff are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy.*

The number of teachers we train every year together with our partners.

Great teachers aren’t born. They’re made. And we’ve been helping to make them since 1947, when we first started training teachers. Whether you want to go into early years, primary, secondary or lifelong learning, we will help you get the professional training and experience it takes. Teaching isn’t always about the results. But here’s one we’re proud of. We are ranked 4th in the country for Education in the Guardian Guide to Higher Education 2018. This puts our education programmes amongst the very best in the UK along with Cambridge, Durham, Reading and Birmingham. So if you want to be pushed and inspired by tutors who really know their stuff, Huddersfield could be your ideal choice.

We’ll make doubly sure of that with your placements too. Thanks to our links with schools, colleges, early years facilities and local authorities, we can give you the chance to get out there and get teaching. Depending on the subject and the age range, competition for teaching posts can be really high. So we give you the chance to stand taller than the rest, with the latest research, cutting-edge teaching and exciting placement opportunities. *Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching; research degrees applies to those on contracts of more than half-time.

We never forget what the end goal is – to get you in front of students so you can develop their talents. So we make sure there’s always plenty of opportunity to do just that. Even in your course work you’ll be able to use mock classrooms for Early Years and Primary practice, and we also offer a science lab and music room. You should feel right at home in the school environment.

My student journey so far

Rosie Grant

Primary Education PGCE with QTS “I chose to study my Primary Education PGCE with QTS at the University of Huddersfield because of the great reputation it has for teacher training. Since graduating, I now work as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) at Earlsheaton Infant School – the school where I did my first placement.

During assessment visits, my tutors were always really positive and would give very specific and practical advice to help improve my practice. “The support I received from my link tutor throughout my placements was amazing. It’s really quite a nerve-wracking experience walking into different schools and classrooms, but the tutors recognise this and are always

there to support you whenever you need them. During assessment visits, my tutors were always really positive and would give very specific and practical advice to help improve my practice. “I couldn’t have been better prepared for starting my first year of teaching. The staff at Huddersfield ensure that you know what to expect, what questions to ask and provide ongoing support through drop-in sessions, conferences and email contact with an NQT lead. I’ve also decided to complete my full Master’s qualification during my first year of teaching as I feel that my assignments allow me to continue to reflect on my own practice and approach to teaching. “I absolutely love working with children; they make me laugh and their excitement to learn new things ensures that every day is different and fun. I look forward to seeing the children every day and feel very lucky and privileged to have been offered my first teaching job at such a beautiful school!”

Developing outstanding teachers of the future

Susan Timmins Senior Lecturer

“My biggest achievement in my career so far has been gaining my PGCE. Gaining this qualification has opened so many doors for me and meant that I’ve been able to build a career doing something I absolutely love! “My subject specialisms are ICT, Computing and Business – areas that have evolved hugely over recent years and today have much broader remits and present far greater challenges. My doctoral studies focus on the evolution of these subject areas within school settings and will help to tell the stories and challenges that my peers have had to overcome.

Our combined expertise, practical support, subject specific mentoring and sharing our research interests mean that our trainees are given the tools and confidence to go out and become outstanding teachers of the future.

20

“I’ve always been passionate about working with young people. Before teaching at the University I’ve been a youth worker and taught in a range of roles within secondary schools, including Advanced Skills Teacher, Head of Key Stage 4 and as part of the Senior Leadership Team. As part of my teaching roles I’ve loved mentoring newly qualified teachers and so my progression to my role at the University felt really natural. “It’s a real privilege to share my knowledge and be part of someone else’s development journey. Our ethos here is to build close relationships with our trainees, work with individuals to support them to achieve. Our combined expertise, practical support, subject specific mentoring and sharing our research interests mean that our trainees are given the tools and confidence to go out and become outstanding teachers of the future.”
