Depending on the subject and the age range, competition for teaching posts can be really high. So we give you the chance to stand taller than the rest, with the latest research, cutting-edge teaching and exciting placement opportunities. *Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching; research degrees applies to those on contracts of more than half-time.

We never forget what the end goal is – to get you in front of students so you can develop their talents. So we make sure there’s always plenty of opportunity to do just that. Even in your course work you’ll be able to use mock classrooms for Early Years and Primary practice, and we also offer a science lab and music room. If you’re striving to become a primary school teacher for Foundation and Key Stage 1 pupils, then this course will help you on your way. The course focuses on developing the skills you need to teach children from ages three to seven and upon successful completion we’ll recommend Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). During the first two years of your course you’ll study a range of compulsory modules covering the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, National Curriculum subjects, professional development and behaviour management. practical experience across our partnership schools. In fact, you’ll undertake a range of longer and shorter enrichment placements every year. As part of your placements you’ll be able to observe experienced teachers, gain practical, hands-on experience and benefit from one-to-one mentoring. It’s all designed to help you develop your skills and move on to become an outstanding teacher. While you’re studying at Huddersfield, you’ll be able to access our extensive professional and academic network, not to mention our excellent facilities and specialist equipment, including our mock Early Years and Primary classrooms designed to help you prepare for the real world whilst you study. Upon successful completion we recommend Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) be awarded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership.

Tom graduated Primary Education (Early Years and Key Stage 1) BA(Hons) with QTS in 2017 and is now teaching Year 3 at Belgrave St. Peter’s CofE Primary School.

Upon successful completion, all our courses lead to the required professional status to start your first teaching year within your chosen sector. For many, studying one of our undergraduate teaching courses is the quickest route to entering the teaching profession.

If you’re hoping to go into teaching within sixth forms or further education colleges, or you see yourself taking up a career in adult education or informal education roles, then this course could be ideal. It’s focused on training to teach within the lifelong learning (post-14) sector. You don’t need previous teaching experience, just an industry skill, an appropriate entry qualification and a passion for teaching and training others. Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be eligible to proceed to gain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status, following a process of professional formation through the Society for Education and Training. Your QTLS is the full professional status for teachers in the Lifelong Learning sector.

We know there’s no substitute for the classroom environment, so we’ll give you the opportunity to go on placement with one of our partnership institutions. On your placement you’ll be able to observe experienced teachers, gain practical hands-on experience and benefit from one-to-one mentoring to help develop the skills you’ll need to become an outstanding and effective teacher.

This course is ideal if you’re already in a learning support role within a school, college or other educational setting and would like to enhance your knowledge and skills in this specialist area.

I absolutely loved this side of the job as through this work it felt like I was truly having an impact on what was taking place in the classroom.

“After teaching for nearly 20 years, including six years as a Headteacher, I decided to return to university and study an MA in Early Childhood with the ambition of becoming a teacher trainer. Graduate Employment (part-time)

If you’re wanting to become an early years specialist and train to teach babies and young children from birth to five years, then this course could be for you. The course is offered on a part-time basis for those that are already working within the sector. On successful completion of the course we recommend Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) be awarded by the National College of Teaching and Leadership on behalf of the Department of Education. You’ll have the opportunity to gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of early childhood, looking at the role of play, considering different curriculum

models and examining the impact of early childhood research and theories on current government perspectives and policies. A significant amount of your learning takes place whilst on placement. We work in partnership with a strong network of providers to deliver the Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS). This helps ensure your practical knowledge is enhanced and that you’ve got the skills required by future employers. Upon successful completion we recommend Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) be awarded by the National College of Teaching and Leadership.

Ruth Marsh graduated Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYTS) in 2014 and is now Early Years Teacher for Burton Green Butterflies Pre-School, York.

If you’re looking to become a primary or secondary school teacher, then you can choose from a number of options all of which lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). University-led training One year full-time PGCE courses which (for secondary) allow you to specialise in a range of subject areas. You’ll be taught on campus, have the opportunity to work with other trainees and also spend a significant amount of time on placement.

Primary Education PGCE with QTS “I chose to study my Primary Education PGCE with QTS at the University of Huddersfield because of the great reputation it has for teacher training. Since graduating, I now work as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) at Earlsheaton Infant School – the school where I did my first placement.

During assessment visits, my tutors were always really positive and would give very specific and practical advice to help improve my practice. “The support I received from my link tutor throughout my placements was amazing. It’s really quite a nerve-wracking experience walking into different schools and classrooms, but the tutors recognise this and are always

“My biggest achievement in my career so far has been gaining my PGCE. Gaining this qualification has opened so many doors for me and meant that I’ve been able to build a career doing something I absolutely love! “My subject specialisms are ICT, Computing and Business – areas that have evolved hugely over recent years and today have much broader remits and present far greater challenges. My doctoral studies focus on the evolution of these subject areas within school settings and will help to tell the stories and challenges that my peers have had to overcome.

Our combined expertise, practical support, subject specific mentoring and sharing our research interests mean that our trainees are given the tools and confidence to go out and become outstanding teachers of the future.
