Welcome to Computing Computing is a dynamic, ever-growing field and our courses at the University of Huddersfield reflect that dynamism. Our courses have been designed to equip you with all the practical and theoretical skills you’ll need to really make an impact in the industry, whatever your area of interest. During your time with us you’ll have support from staff who have a wealth of professional experience both in industry and in research. Our staff are undertaking research that’s relevant to the world around us, research that they can bring into their teaching. You’ll also have access to inspiring facilities in a creative and supportive environment.

Almost all of our courses are accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), which is the Chartered Institute for IT. Accreditation is independent recognition that the course meets the high standards set by the IT industry and so you can be certain what we teach at Huddersfield is contemporary and relevant to industry. We offer invaluable real-world experiences via the optional placement year as well as endless opportunities for learning, development and creativity. Only your imagination sets the boundaries!

If you’re doing a full-time, 3-4 year course you have the option to spend a year on placement. Helping you to gain that all-important industry experience, broadening your horizons and your prospects. We offer Integrated Master’s (MComp, MEng and MSci) courses too, which let you study for an extra year to go even deeper and gain a postgraduate qualification. Technology never stands still, so we make sure our kit is at the cutting edge. High end PCs with dual monitors, Windows and Linux workstations, Adobe Suite and Autodesk 3ds Max, they’re all here. Also, many of our staff have got years of experience in the industry, so you’ll be taught by people who know what businesses are looking for. Computer Science with Cyber Security BSc(Hons)

There are many reasons why Cyber Security is fast becoming one of the most important aspects of Computing. The monetary value of data has led to an increase in cyber-crime, meaning computing professionals with Cyber Security knowledge and expertise are in high-demand. This course aims to prepare you for an exciting and impactful career in the Computing industry. Many aspects of Cyber Security rely on the fundamental principles of Computing Science: designing secure software systems, implementing cryptographic techniques for secure data transfer, and auditing systems for vulnerabilities. In this course you will be taught both theoretical and practical aspects of Computing Science and Cyber Security.

Many of the big challenges in the cyber security field need the novel use of Computing Science and Software Engineering techniques to develop the next generation of security products. Your tutors will encourage you to tackle challenging problems, and particularly those at the forefront of research, to ensure you are in the best position to make a real impact in the Computing sector. In Year 1 you will follow the core computing programme to give you a broad understanding. Then from Year 2 onwards you will take specialist Cyber Security modules, cover topics such as Cryptography, Biometrics and Access Control, and Vulnerability Assessments.

Computer Science with Games Programming BSc(Hons)

Computer games development is an innovative and thriving industry in the UK. This course aims to help you develop and gain the core knowledge and skills to become a well equipped graduate for this exciting sector. Your course is built on the core topics of computing science and software engineering that apply across the computer games and general software industry. In addition, you will study both theoretical and applied topics underpinning the development of modern computer games. These topics will progress from fundamental games programming techniques to developing various core game sub-systems and game production processes. During your third year you have the opportunity to take a year-long placement. Thanks to our links with a range of leading employers, you could end up working for a big name. Previous students have taken placements with Sega Europe Ltd, Rebellion Studios, Rockstar Leeds and Red Kite. Or you could have the chance to take a placement at the University’s Canalside Studios, working as part of a team researching and developing games for a range of platforms. Our Enterprise Placement Year ** scheme also affords you the chance to set up your own company (individually or in a group). You’ll have support from business advisors and a games industry mentor.

Computer Systems Engineering BEng(Hons)

Computer systems are all around us, from home entertainment packages and mobile phones through to car control systems and complex communication networks. We aim to give you the skills you need for a career in this thriving industry sector. We’ll introduce you to a range of computer systems. From desktop and workstation computers through to high performance computer systems, we aim to give you a thorough background in a wide range of areas. If you’re hoping to be a computer systems engineer, potential employers will be looking for you to understand software programming techniques, computer systems architecture and electronics. This course focuses on these three core aspects to give you the chance to build your knowledge and skills.

We want to give you as much practical experience as possible. So in your third year, for example, you’ll have the chance to go on a year-long placement to put your skills into practice. The course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council. When you finish your studies, you could become registered as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), which could be a feather in your cap when you’re looking for your first exciting role in the industry. The course could also lead on to you gaining Chartered Engineer (CEng) status following further study.

Businesses across the world are looking for computing graduates who know their stuff. We could help you show potential employers that you’re the person they need, with this integrated Master’s course. The course is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS). The Computing MComp course builds on our Computing BSc(Hons) degree. You’ll spend an extra year studying to gain a Master’s level qualification, and an even deeper knowledge of your subject. The course features option modules, so you can select the topics that you want to focus on. Typical options include computing science, software development, information technology and multimedia.

We’ll also give you the chance to gain real-world experience while you’re here. You’ll be able to spend your third year working on a year-long placement in the industry. In the first year of your course you’ll be studying alongside students doing our Computing Science BSc(Hons)/MSci, Computing BSc(Hons) and Software Engineering BSc(Hons)/MEng courses. They all share the same first year, but then move on to look at different areas. So if you find in your first year of studies that one particular area interests you more than others, you may be free to transfer between courses.**

Businesses are looking for graduates who have an in-depth knowledge of computing. They want people who know their way around information technologies (IT) – but they also want people who know about business. This course aims to help you develop your understanding of both disciplines and how they are interlinked, and to build up your skills for future employment. To become a computing professional in a competitive and fast-paced environment, you need a range of skills and a good understanding of business, so we’ll look at both areas. We’ll give you the chance to design and develop computer systems and websites – and we’ll get you thinking

about the issues that a business has to take into account when developing new information systems. We’ll look at finance systems, how user-friendly a system should be, and the strategic business needs of an organisation. You’ll spend most of your time studying in the School of Computing and Engineering, but some of your modules will be provided by our Business School too. During your studies you’ll also have the chance to spend a year working in industry. You could gain some great experience and pick up some useful contacts that could help you take the first steps in your career.

Computing enhances the quality of our lives and aims to meet the challenges of the modern world. This integrated Master’s course is based on our successful Computing Science BSc(Hons) course and includes an extra year that leads to a postgraduate level MSci qualification. The thinking behind the Computing Science MSci course is to give you the chance to cover the subject in more depth. Our aim is that once you’ve completed the course, you should be able to go on to a career in research or in industry as a computing scientist or software manager. Information Technology (IT) professionals help businesses and organisations use any information they store digitally. Gain a qualification in IT and you could work with computer-based technology, integrating communications with computer networks to benefit organisations in the public or private sector. We aim to give you the knowledge and skills to help organisations identify their IT needs and then design, produce and operate computer-based information systems. During your studies we’ll give you the opportunity to gain a thorough grounding in the principles of IT, including best practice in developing web technologies. You’ll also study

advanced skills in developing database-enabled applications. The focus is on giving you the skills to perform strongly in a graduate level information systems position, and prepare you for a career in this dynamic area of computing. We want to give you lots of opportunities to put what you’ve learnt into practice, and we work closely with industry. You could also spend a year on placement, which could really help you develop your experience and your contacts. The course is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), the chartered institute for the IT industry. BCS accreditation is awarded to courses that provide a solid foundation in computing.

Software engineering is all about finding practical solutions to real problems. Computer software is all around us, from commercial activities like online retailing, to educational and personal use, it plays a part in so many industries and activities. Employers will want you to be able to produce software that is robust, reliable and attractive to use – all at a reasonable cost and to a certain timeframe. This course aims to give you an understanding of what’s possible, and where your skills could take you.

In your third year you’ll have the opportunity to take a placement year, putting into practice the techniques you’ve learnt. The Software Engineering BSc(Hons) course shares a common first year with a number of other courses: Computing BSc(Hons)/MComp, Computing Science BSc(Hons)/MSci and Software Engineering MEng. That means you have the flexibility to transfer from one course to another during your first year.**

You’ll have the chance to explore contemporary methods and techniques in software development. We’ll also encourage you to develop the flexibility and adaptability needed for a long-term career. On campus we have high-standard and contemporary computing facilities. In our laboratories you’ll find a range of machines running a variety of operating systems and software.

This course has been designed to provide you with a deeper, specialist knowledge of software engineering than the BSc(Hons) version of the course. Web Programming with Cyber Security BSc(Hons)

There are many reasons why Cyber Security is fast becoming one of the most important aspects of Computing. The monetary value of data has led to an increase in cyber-crime, meaning computing professionals with Cyber Security knowledge and expertise are in high-demand. This course aims to prepare you for an exciting and impactful career in the Computing industry. Web-based systems are particularly vulnerable to malicious attacks due to the ability to connect remotely. Industry needs computing professionals who have both technical expertise to deliver new impactful solutions for end-users, but also those with Cyber Security knowledge to reduce the likelihood of solutions being compromised.

This course aims to provide you with skills and experience to help you develop new web-based technological solutions for organisations. This involves looking at web, desktop, and mobile-based solutions. In addition, you will be taught how to analyse cyber-security risks and how to take necessary steps to mitigate. This will involve looking at aspects of cryptography for data security, biometrics for access control, and mechanisms to identify and test vulnerabilities. To help develop your programming abilities, you will learn many common and essential programming languages, such as JavaScript and PHP. You will also learn frameworks like Bootstrap. In your third year you will also get the opportunity to undertake a work placement where it will be an excellent opportunity to put your new knowledge and skills into action.

If you already have quite a lot of knowledge of computing, and want to build on your studies so far this course could be for you. We’ll expect you to have completed at least two years of university or higher education study in a related subject.

If you have studied Information Technology for at least two years at university or higher education level, this course helps you build on your knowledge and skills to gain a degree. This one-year top-up course aims to give you the knowledge and skills you need to help organisations specify, design, implement, operate and exploit information systems. On your course we’ll give you the chance to work with sophisticated software tools to develop information systems for people.

It could help you develop your creativity and imagination as well as your technical competence. We also want to encourage you to be an independent learner and develop the transferable skills that employers are looking for. The aim is to support you in gaining the talents and abilities you need to follow a career in computer-based information systems. My student journey so far

Sam Vidler Information and Communication Technology BSc(Hons)* “I grew up in a city called Brighton. I moved away because I wanted to experience living away from home. The thing which has surprised me the most about coming to University is how quickly you make new friends especially if the University is a long way from where you are from and if you have no friends up here. “When I first started doing ICT at school it was something I really enjoyed and from that I wanted to improve and develop my skills further by doing it at college and then University to study it as a degree.

I felt very proud and privileged to have an offer at the University of Huddersfield. When I came to the University on an Open Day it was somewhere I really wanted to study, as I loved the look and feel of the place. “The piece of work I am most proud of was an assignment for my Web Design and programming module in my second year where we had to design and develop a website using PHP. I had never used PHP before meaning I had to learn from scratch how to use it. I managed to get an A for that assignment which I was really pleased about. “My favourite facilities would be the computer labs as they have all the software programmes on there which I use as part of my course. One of the computer labs is now open 24 hours meaning I can come in anytime of the day and do work, whether that be in the evenings after teaching hours or at weekends. “My advice to students thinking of studying ICT is that you will develop and learn lots of new skills. You will get help and advice from tutors who are very well qualified in what they do. You will also have the opportunity to do a placement and from that have a higher chance of getting a graduate job after you finish University. My dreams and plans for the future after graduation would be to get a graduate job in the Web industry.” * Course now offered is Information Technology BSc(Hons)

Encouraging women into computing

Dr Diane Kitchin Senior Lecturer, Department of Informatics “Growing up I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be. At one point I liked the idea of being a TV researcher, looking up facts for programmes – and part of my job now involves research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Planning. I have had research papers appear in some of the top journals and been to conferences around the world to present about my work in AI Planning.

It’s wonderful to see a student’s sense of achievement, I feed on seeing the penny drop and their understanding developing. “Computing appealed to me as there are definite answers and I wanted something that would get me a well-paid job and an interesting career. I feel many women miss out on a career in computing and I’m really keen to combat this, especially through initiatives like Athena Swan. I’m a member of the School Athena Swan Committee and the University currently holds the Bronze Award. “After my Master’s I had the opportunity to undertake a funded PhD. I taught part-time during my studies and got a job as a Research Assistant when I had completed, and after a year I got my lecturing job. “In my current role I teach across Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. I’m also the Admissions Tutor and Course Leader for our Computing BSc(Hons) course. So I’m sure we’ll get to meet if you come to an Open Day! “I love my job, it’s wonderful to see a student’s sense of achievement, I feed on seeing the penny drop and their understanding developing.”
