Chemistry with Forensic Science BSc(Hons)

Chemistry with Forensic Science BSc(Hons) Your course On this course you’ll get the chance to see chemistry and forensic science in action and build a broad range of skills that’ll stand you in good stead for a science-sector career. In our modern labs, you’ll get to grips with a whole range of instruments with the aim of becoming skilled in chemical and forensic analysis. Techniques you could have the chance to try out include spot tests for blood, drugs and firearm residues, identifying glass and paint fragments and examining microscopic hairs and fibres. Building on the solid foundations from your chemistry and forensics modules, we’ll also give you the chance to spend a year in industry or research in Year 3. Not only is a placement year a golden opportunity to put your knowledge into practice, it could also help give that all important boost to your employability when you graduate.

BSc(Hons) Your course On the Forensic and Analytical Science BSc(Hons), you’ll benefit from career-focused teaching and a course that combines forensic science with the complementary area of analytical science. You’ll be supported by academic staff, who are experienced practitioners in forensic science, to focus on the theory and gain the practical skills that could set you up for a wide choice of careers across a range of industries. There’s a wide spectrum of topics taught through lectures, tutorials, lab classes and purpose-built crime-scene facilities. You’ll also be supported in gaining experience of how things work in the real world of the profession through mock criminal court hearings and organised outdoor crime scenes.

You can also extend your hands-on understanding by opting to complete a placement in Year 3 to equip yourself with the knowledge and skills required to help boost your employment prospects in one of the largest area of employment for graduates with chemical science-related degrees.

Forensic and Analytical Science/ Forensic and Analytical Science with Industrial Experience MSci Your course These undergraduate Masters’ courses offer you the opportunity to gain a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of forensic science whilst developing an in-depth knowledge of analytical science. Where the courses differ from each other is that in the third year of the MSci you’ll do a research placement in a university or research setting and with the MSci with Industrial Experience you’ll do a placement in an industry setting. This placement year could be the perfect opportunity for you to put the theory you’ve learned to the test and help boost your career prospects. No matter what career path you’ve set your sights on, these courses are designed to help you develop the practical and problem-solving skills you need. In our specialised labs and crime-scene facilities, you’ll be able to get to grips with the tools and processes used in real-life investigations and our simulated scenarios will challenge you to apply your know-how on the spot.

Your course If you don’t have the appropriate qualifications for direct entry to one of our science based degrees, you can apply to our Science Extended Degree. Getting stuck into the four main disciplines of biology, chemistry, maths and physics, you’ll have the chance to get a grounding in the scientific knowledge you’ll need no matter which route you eventually decide to take. Our professional, dedicated and friendly staff are on hand to help reshape the way you learn, challenge you to rethink your own practices and equip you with the skills that will be the foundations for your further studies. Taught through lectures, tutorials and laboratory practicals in our modern facilities, you’ll have the chance to benefit from staff’s expertise in both academia and industry. Optional drop-in sessions offer a great opportunity for you to strengthen your knowledge and make sure you’ve got a clear understanding of all the material as you go along.

Progression onto Chemical Engineering BEng(Hons) is dependent on achieving a minimum pass mark of 60% in the Maths component. Progression onto Chemical Engineering MEng is also dependent on achieving a minimum pass mark of 60% in the Maths component, plus an overall pass mark of at least 70%. **
Progression onto Pharmacy MPharm is dependent on meeting stringent performance levels in the Science Extended Degree. You must pass all six modules with an overall pass mark of at least 70%. Plus at least 70% in the Chemistry and Maths modules. You must also successfully undertake an interview with the Pharmacy admissions staff. ***

Facilities The University is investing £18.3m in new science facilities and laboratories for Applied Sciences students, expected to open in Autumn 2019. In the Joseph Priestley Building you’ll study in a modern learning environment using professional standard equipment, supported by staff with a blend of industry experience and research excellence.

Any subsequent changes to information will be published in the course information listings on our website www.courses.hud.ac.uk and you should check our website for the latest information before you apply. Changes to a course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment.
Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year.
Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.
Major changes
Termination of course
We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.
In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.
Changes to your course after you enrol as a student We will always try to deliver your course and other services as described. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below: Changes to option modules

For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment.
