Introduction Huddersfield Business School is developing its partnerships with both academic and commercial organisations internationally. Currently we have research partnerships with universities in every continent of the world. Our research on coffee production in Ethiopia is long standing and has made a major contribution to both practice and government policy. Our research on public relations has made a significant contribution to the development of that profession. Some of our students are located in China, Hong Kong and India where they study programmes which are taught by a mixture of Huddersfield and local staff. We have also recently opened a London campus and it is now possible to study some of our Master programmes in London as well as in Huddersfield.
Half our Bachelor degree students undertake a twelve month “sandwich” work placement in their third year. Some of these placements are with international organisations outside the UK. They make a big contribution to our UK based students’ inter cultural awareness and development. I hope that you’ll find this brochure helpful as an introduction to the School and in identifying whether or not we might be able to work together. If so, my colleagues and I would be delighted to hear from you. In the first instance, please contact Professor John Anchor, Associate Dean (International) for a preliminary discussion.
Professor Jill Johnes, Dean of Huddersfield Business School
Professor John Anchor, Associate Dean (International) John Anchor is Professor of International Strategy and Associate Dean (International) at Huddersfield Business School. Community forest management and enterprise development in Ethiopia
Degradation of tropical rain forests is causing devastating losses of biodiversity and stored carbon. It is also destroying the livelihoods of forest-using communities. Forest loss is driven by many factors including a lack of clear rights for local people, poor management arrangements and limited economic opportunities which fail to make forests an economically competitive land use.
Research Partnership for Community Forest Management From the late 1990s an inter-disciplinary research team led by Adrian Wood, Professor of Sustainability at the University of Huddersfield, has been conducting action research in southwest Ethiopia. This research is carried out in collaboration with Ethiopian partners, a local NGO (non-governmental organisation) EWNRA (The Ethio Wetlands and Natural Resources Association), established by an earlier Huddersfield Project, the government of Ethiopia’s Southern Region and the Federal Biodiversity Institute. Forest Rights and Policy Development Based on these findings the team helped the regional government develop a new forest law in 2012. This was the first truly participatory policy development process in the country, using a range of consultations across the region’s nineteen million people. The law allowed the introduction of a highly devolved form of community forest management, giving communities rights to their forests and allowing them to utilise sustainably the diverse forest products. The findings of these studies have shown that clear rights for local communities are needed, along with supportive government policy, as well as forestbased enterprises and local institutions to manage the forest and related trade.

Developing a Global Capabilities Framework
Professor Anne Gregory, in conjunction with the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, has led to an ambitious research project designed to identify the capabilities of Public Relations (PR) professionals worldwide. The purpose was to develop a new framework that would replace previous, mainly competency-based approaches, to offer a more usable, adaptable and updateable framework that would support the changing nature of and context of the profession. Professor Anne Gregory, Professor of Corporate Communication at the University of Huddersfield and Director of the project, assembled an international research group, with partners in eight countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, Sweden and the USA.
The overall research design was influences by ideas about capabilities put forward by leading thinkers about human development and social justice. Instead of asking what practitioners can already do, they were asked what the profession – collectively and individually – is capable of. The research and the resulting framework represents a seismic shift in the approach to understanding and developing the work of PR professionals around the world, and will shape the profession in years to come. Sounding out refugees
The research project ‘Sounding out refugees’ was carried out by an inter-disciplinary team of researchers from Huddersfield Business School (Dr Radi Haloub, Dr Deema Refai and Dr John Lever) and the School of Music, Humanities and Media (Dr Toby Martin) at the University of Huddersfield. The project worked with Syrian refugees in Jordan to explore their journeys and the challenges they face, focusing in particular on how these journeys and challenges lead them to engage in entrepreneurship. The research highlights the transitory stages that refugees go through, presenting their entrepreneurial journey as a liminal and contextualized one.
Despite the challenges that these refugees face, many of them present with high levels of vocational knowledge and expertise. Some have, and continue to demonstrate, successful examples of entrepreneurial engagement whereby they are able to overcome the challenges of their context through utilizing minimal resources, thus contributing to the formal and informal, economy.
“Over the last 2 years or so, we have worked across Jordan and the UK with Syrian refugees. In Jordan this has involved work in partnership with local agencies, and in the UK with the Refugee Agency and their partners, including Horton Housing in Bradford. We have all also made links with academic partners in Canada and other parts of Europe and will continue to expand this work going forward.” Dr John Lever

Business Development and Enterprise
Collaboration opens the opportunity to share knowledge and create meaningful partnerships and practical solutions. Huddersfield Business School has a number of ways in which we work with and support businesses to engage and benefit from collaborative working.
A two-year collaboration between Deluxe Beds, a Huddersfield based bespoke bed manufacturing company and Huddersfield Business School, resulted in savings of over £1.8million for the company. Months before the project was complete, the business had already exceeded the anticipated five-year defined financial targets and had witnessed a 100% increase in productivity.
During her time with the company, KTP Associate Dr Samar Javed has overseen multiple projects and successful funding applications. These have led to an increase in sales due to improved marketing, company outreach and networking. The company has also noticed improvements in its supply chain and has seen an increase in production through more efficient operations.
This successful project was supported by Innovate UK through their Knowledge Transfer Partnership programme (KTP). These are one example of how we can work with businesses to improve their competitiveness and productivity through the application of innovative knowledge, technology and skills.
“The KTP programme bridges a gap between industry and academia. The valuable insight received from this project allowed the company to access new research ideas as well as discover alternative funding options to create practical solutions.” Khatizi Bibi, Managing Director of Deluxe Beds Ltd
