My student journey so far
Newton Wobo Accountancy and Finance BA(Hons)
“I grew up in the Netherlands and moved to the UK when my father got a job here. “I never thought I’d end up studying accountancy and finance. In college I spent two years mastering how computers use algorithms, but then decided it just wasn’t for me. I love my course at Huddersfield and I’m convinced I made the right choice coming here. “I’m part of the Business School’s Student Ambassador team, interacting with potential students when they visit, listening and giving

advice. My role has put me in many different situations where I have had to step out of my comfort zone and I’ve learnt so much as a result. I’ve had the time of my life whilst working hard with a bunch of diverse and friendly people. “The thing that’s surprised me the most about university is that it’s restructured the way I think and do things. My course involves a lot of self-reflection which allowed me to really understand myself. Also, having to do a lot of presentations has boosted my confidence. I think the skills I’ve gained are really going to help me stand out to a potential employer among thousands of other applicants.”

Accountancy is not just about the numbers!
Kay Smith Senior Lecturer, Accountancy and Finance
“I always wanted to be a teacher, and initially trained to teach in a secondary school, however my interest in finance meant that it was more appealing to teach in further and higher education. “I am originally from Holmfirth, and have worked in further and higher education for over 12 years in Barnsley and Doncaster, teaching on courses at all levels, but I particularly enjoyed working with undergraduate and postgraduate students. In September 2007 I took an opportunity to join the Accountancy and Finance team at the University of Huddersfield to teach Quantitative Analysis and Finance and I have never looked back.
I became interested in teaching because of my lack of confidence when being taught maths. “I became interested in teaching because of my lack of confidence when being taught maths from a very early age. I decided that there must be a better way for students to learn about maths, so that they would find the subject more interesting and useful, although accountancy is not just about the numbers. “My most memorable events are seeing the students inspired and enjoying learning about accountancy. It’s fantastic to see students graduating with us and going onto successful careers.”
