Open door policy

100% The UK’s only University where all our permanent teaching staff are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy*

Economics underpins all of our everyday decisions, as well as determining the health of the economy, with the levels of interest rates, unemployment and inflation having direct consequences for all of us.

our students is a realisation of their significance in the real world, and how students and graduates can use the tools of economic analysis to calculate anything from how many hours to study or the impact of rising interest rates.

At Huddersfield we pride ourselves on the quality of our support and provision for students and appreciate that every student is unique. Throughout our teaching there is an emphasis on the applicability and relevance of the economic theories that we discuss so that graduates will be able to apply their economics knowledge in their careers – this is a skill that employers are increasingly demanding.

For most students, studying for a degree offers the challenge of learning to live and work more independently than ever before. However, it also allows you to immerse yourself in a subject that you are interested in and develop a lifelong passion for it. Studying for an economics degree gives you an in-depth knowledge of a subject that has been demonstrated to be valued by employers in terms of levels of graduate salaries. An economics degree also offers so many varied opportunities for careers, for example in banking and finance, economics and management consultancy, government, work in developing countries, journalism and accountancy to name just a few.

Studying an economics degree involves understanding increasingly complicated economic theories, often depicted diagrammatically or mathematically, as well as grasping statistical, economic models. What makes these theories and models relevant for many of

Economics is the science of decision making. It is prevalent in the world, where various economic indicators such as changes in the price level, interest or exchange rates affect how decisions are made. Therefore, economists are interested in how individuals, households, firms, and governments allocate scarce resources to meet the requirements of the population. Studying economics is a way to understand (and find potential solutions to) the world’s social problems such as widespread poverty and inequality, high unemployment, and rising pollution. The course offers in-depth study of microeconomics (including sector specific practices such as competition, regulation and intervention) and macroeconomics (the importance of aggregate

consumption, investment, and what fuels economic growth). There will be opportunities to further tailor your degree with various optional modules such as accounting and environmental policy. Throughout the course there will be training in statistics, quantitative methods and econometrics. These will help equip you with the tools used by professional economists to analyse economic policies. There are strong employment opportunities in areas such as economics, finance, management consultancy, multinational organisations and government agencies. Recent graduates from similar courses at the University have gone on to work for leading FTSE-100 companies, the government, media, industry and manufacturing.

The recent downturn in the world economy has emphasised the importance of understanding the financial system. Whether it is analysing if an investment is profitable, or learning how to mitigate financial risk, this course will offer you an opportunity to develop this understanding from an economics perspective. Additionally, this course will emphasise the application of financial theory to real world practice. This course will offer core training in economics via traditional modules such as microeconomics and macroeconomics, but will offer opportunities to enhance your understanding of both retail and investment banking, functioning of bond and stock markets, and the regulatory practices that impact the financial system.

My student journey so far

Fahmida Nisa Economics BSc(Hons)

“I grew up in the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka. Moving away from home was a tough decision, but despite the big cultural difference, Huddersfield feels like home now. “I love how basic economic policies can make the world go round and how they’ve shortened the gap between nations.

“I have many great memories from my first year: becoming President of the Bangladeshi Student Society, participating in a charity fashion show, making friends who’ll last a lifetime. The most significant one has to be the happiness on my parents’ faces when I made the Dean’s list for meritorious performance.

“I thought university would only be about studying and that “The Economics course at I’d end up living in the library. I thought university would only be about studying. That’s definitely not the case!

“For now I want to concentrate on my studies and building up my CV by securing a placement. After graduation, I’d like get some work experience before coming back for a Master’s, possibly even a PhD!”

It utilises numeracy, critical thinking and analysis

Johan Rewilak Lecturer, Economics

“When I was younger I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but my interests revolved around sports, geography and travel. The possibilities of an economics degree allowed me to satisfy all of the above. As an economist I do get to travel with my job, and in addition to my primary research field, I do take an interest in the economics of the sporting sector.

My biggest achievements to date are my publications in high quality, peer reviewed journals. “What I enjoy most about teaching economics is that it utilises many different skills, including numeracy, critical thinking and analysis, which are highly sought after by top employers. It certainly keeps me on my toes!

“I am originally from this area, but moved to the “My biggest achievements to East Midlands for a decade date are my publications in whilst pursuing my studies high quality, peer reviewed and work.
