Today we train over 1,500 teachers within the School of Education and Professional Development every year together with our local and national partners. We offer an exciting range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses that will help you to develop the skills and understanding needed to become an outstanding teacher.
We train over 1,500 teachers every year.
So whether you’re interested in teaching early years and primary children, want to inspire secondary school students or share your professional skills with learners in the lifelong learning (post-16) sector, then we’ve got the professional training courses to help you on your way. We also work with a range of local School Direct partners for those interested in training to become primary or secondary school teachers via this route.
Whatever course you choose to study, you’ll be taught by an outstanding team of teachers. In fact we’ve been ranked in the top five in the Guardian Guide for Education 2016 for the sixth year running. We combine the latest research, cutting-edge teaching practice and excellent placement opportunities to help ensure our trainees are able to equip themselves with the most relevant and up-to-date skills needed in the classroom. To help you put theory into practice we use our close links with schools, colleges, early years settings and local authorities. And when you’re not on placement you’ll be studying in one of our well-equipped teaching rooms containing the latest audiovisual kit and whiteboards, and open access computing suites. We also offer a range of specialist facilities, including mock primary and early years classrooms, a science lab and a music room.

Our postgraduate routes into teaching
If you’re nearing graduation, already working in education or looking to start a new career, we also offer a range of postgraduate options so you can get the qualifications you need to teach in the sector you’re interested in.
And if you’re looking to become a primary or secondary school teacher, then you can choose from a number of options all of which lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). University-led training One year full-time PGCE courses which (for secondary) allow you to specialise in a range of subject areas. You’ll be taught on campus, have the opportunity to work with other trainees and also spend a significant amount of time on placement. Changing the rules around Maths
