Our Sport and Exercise Sciences courses scored 91% for student satisfaction**
We believe that students come to University to prepare themselves for their future career. So that’s what we focus on. Supporting you to develop the skills, knowledge and attributes to become employable is right at the heart of our courses. How do we do it?
All our Sport and Exercise Sciences courses are endorsed by SkillsActive
Firstly, all our Sport and Exercise Sciences courses are endorsed by SkillsActive. This means that you could study additional industry recognised qualifications as part of your degree. Some of our courses are also endorsed by The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) or approved by the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr). Secondly, we support you to gain real-world experience. You’ll go on a work placement during your course, giving you the chance to develop your skills in a professional environment.
We’ll try to give you opportunities which match your career goals. Thirdly, our facilities give you the chance to learn practical skills. Whether you’re assessing body composition in the Bod POD, measuring reaction forces on the Kistler force plate, or capturing high speed movements using the 3D motion analysis system, our labs help you to get hands-on. And that’s not all. We’ve been the UK’s leading University for receiving National Teaching Fellowships to mark Britain’s best lecturers in Higher Education for the past eight years and we’re also the UK’s only University where 100% of permanent teaching staff are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy.* Wherever you see yourself in the future, you can be sure that studying a Sport and Exercise Sciences course at Huddersfield will support you in achieving your goals.
Supporting you to become employable is right at the heart of our courses. * Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching. ** N ational Student Survey 2015

The economic and personal burden of leading unhealthy lifestyles is clear. The number of people with diseases linked to physical inactivity and poor nutrition has increased dramatically. Equally there has been much made in the media and healthcare about how physical activity, sport and exercise can improve physiological and psychological wellbeing. This is a developing field in the UK and the demand for expertise in this area is increasing. This course focuses on two main areas, physiology and psychology, in order to understand how the body works and why humans

Sport science is a discipline that studies how the human body and mind work during physical exertion. Many national governing bodies of sport and professional sports clubs now employ sports scientists, strength and conditioning coaches, and sports psychologists to achieve the ‘marginal gains’ necessary for their players to compete to their full potential. This course aims to provide the tools to optimise sport performance and minimise the risk of injury. It involves four main areas of study: physiology, psychology, biomechanics and nutrition. Physiology examines how the body responds to exercise and physical activity, what

limits performance, and how appropriate training can improve performance. Sport psychology examines the relationships between a performer’s psychological characteristics, the ability to use psychological skills, and the impact on sport performance. Biomechanics concerns the application of laws and principles of physics to human biological systems, and sports nutrition considers the specific nutritional needs of sports performers for performance and recovery. The course includes a work placement in your second year, in an appropriate environment, helping you to relate theory to practice and develop skills in a real work context.

Eating a healthy diet and being physically active are essential for wellbeing. Nutrition also plays a key role in achieving optimal athletic performance. Experts in sport and exercise nutrition translate the most up to date scientific research into practical, evidence-based advice for competitive and recreational athletes, as well as groups and individuals wanting to improve their health, lose weight and be more active. Sports nutrition is a developing area not only in elite sport, but in personal training and community based physical activity interventions. This course covers sport science and nutrition, aiming to provide an in-depth understanding of biological sciences, nutrition, exercise and sports performance.

I completed my work placement with a company called Upbeat at Calderdale Council. During my time there I was able to lead and observe a range of classes from primary school physical activity and nutrition classes to adult cardiac exercise classes. My student journey so far
Precious Oladipo Exercise Science BSc(Hons)
“I used to play with my toys and pretend to teach them!” says Precious Oladipo from South-East London, recalling her childhood dream of becoming a teacher. “I also wanted to be a professional gymnast, but I stopped doing gymnastics when I was 12.” Her early interest in sport led her to studying Exercise Science BSc(Hons) at the University of Huddersfield. “My mum’s a dietician and I wanted to be like her, and I’ve always been interested in health. I saw the course content for Exercise Science, and it seemed really practical and hands-on. The anatomy
I saw the course content and it appealed to me a lot.
content appealed to me a lot because I like that side of biology. “I did a work placement with a physiotherapist, and also worked in a nursery”, explains Precious. These experiences have led to her future goals. “I’m planning to do a Master’s in physiotherapy, and then work in rehabilitation and physical activity with children and pregnant women. It’s really important because pregnant women play a massive role in the development of fat cells in their foetus. If they don’t exercise, the foetus’ fat cells can grow in size. “Since I’ve come to University, I’ve made some great friendships. I also like the scenery around here. It’s a really nice area to be in.”

Matt Haines Senior Lecturer, Sport and Exercise Sciences
Matt is a Yorkshireman and lives with his family in his home city, Leeds. After leaving school, he joined the Armed Forces. “I was drawn to the physical and mental challenge of serving as a Royal Marine. It was a fantastic experience which was ultimately cut short by an injury. However, my passion for exercise was established.”
