Your time on the course is split between university study and clinical practice. Clinical practice opportunities include working in midwife led units, birth centres, labour wards, antenatal/postnatal wards, neonatal care, community care and women’s homes.

Modern midwifery emphasises health promotion, ongoing assessment and planning of care in pregnancy, as well as working in partnership with women to ensure the best possible outcomes for them and their families.

In addition, we coordinate placements in other NHS healthcare settings to help broaden your midwifery journey. In the final year there are opportunities to have your own ‘caseload’ of women, as well as undertake an elective midwifery placement.

The course aims to develop competent autonomous practitioners, who are confident in the theory and practice of midwifery and interdisciplinary team working.

My student journey so far

Aaron Buckland Operating Department Practice BSc(Hons)

“I grew up in an ex-mining village in South Yorkshire, where I was always surrounded by my family”, explains Aaron Buckland, Operating Department Practice BSc(Hons) student. Aaron originally wanted a career in Information Technology, however he changed his mind in the final year of college. “I decided I didn’t want to work in isolation, as I wanted to use people skills and apply my communication skills to my profession. Initially, I considered the more well known healthcare related courses such as paramedic

science, nursing and podiatry. Whilst doing so the University contacted me and asked whether I had considered Operating Department Practice (ODP), which at the time I wasn’t aware of. However, after some research I thought the course would be better fitting to my desires.”

Aaron, who chose to study the course at Huddersfield due to the placement connections, comments “the career excites me and I am able to support patients at the most vulnerable periods in their hospital treatment. I believe that ODP is the healthcare secret gem, as it’s still not a widely known profession.“ In the future The career excites me Aaron would like to pursue his and I am able to support interest in research and ODP patients at the most through undertaking a PhD. vulnerable periods in their “I have found something I am really interested in and grown hospital treatment. a passion for.” To hear Aaron talk about his student journey visit   hud.ac/profiles

Hear from Tracy on Health and Community

Tracy Pottinger Senior Lecturer, Health and Community Development BSc(Hons)

“I wanted to be a vet or work in a post office!” says Tracy Pottinger, recalling her childhood dreams. “My family moved to Huddersfield when I was eight, and I’ve always considered Huddersfield to be my home. “After moving to London at the age of eighteen to study, I returned in my early twenties and worked in a number of community health roles. I then began my teaching career in 1995 at West Yorkshire College of Health, which was integrated into the University of Huddersfield.”

It was during her time working in public health that Tracy turned her attention to her current field of teaching. “I became interested in the social, environmental and political aspects of health and decided to focus on these rather than the medical causes. I enjoy teaching and learning from the diverse groups of students who choose to study Health and Community Development.”

Tracy’s most memorable moment during her time at Huddersfield? “I travelled to Ethiopia in 2000 to work on a project. I met my husband on Tracy left the University in 2001, the flight home!” initially moving to London to teach at Thames Valley University, followed by a period working at the Commission for I enjoy teaching and Health Improvement. She then learning from the diverse moved to Seattle, USA, before groups of students who returning to the University of choose to study Health and Huddersfield in 2009. Community Development.
