For my work placement, I spent time at Healthwatch Kirklees, an organisation which investigates healthcare complaints. It was really interesting to work with them in the build up to the 2015 Election, when the NHS was such a big issue. Ranked 4th in the country for politics**

We believe that politics is not a spectator sport. It isn’t simply something that happens within the Borough of Westminster, nor is it something just studied in a lecture theatre. We believe that to study politics, you have to live, breathe and participate in politics. That’s why we give you opportunities. We support you to experience a work placement in a political setting.

100%

Our Politics courses scored 100% for student satisfaction***

We encourage you to get involved on campus, through student-led debates, blogging and the active Student Politics Society. We even give some students the chance to study abroad in Europe, the USA or South East Asia. Now, choosing a university is a big decision. One of the biggest decisions you’ll make. Take control, and make your decision a great one. Choose to study Politics at Huddersfield.

We were ranked 4th in the country by The Guardian’s University Guide 2016 and scored 100% for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2015. And you’d be in the safe hands. We’ve been the UK’s leading University for receiving National Teaching Fellowships to mark Britain’s best lecturers in Higher Education for the past eight years. You can choose to study Politics as a single honours degree, or you could choose to study it alongside Sociology, Criminology or Economics. You could also choose to study International Politics, with the opportunity to learn a new language which could help to shape your understanding of global relations. Here at the University of Huddersfield, we aim to make each week count. After all, as Huddersfield-born former Prime Minister Harold Wilson once said, “a week is a long time in politics”.

We believe that politics is not a spectator sport.

This will involve training in statistics and quantitative methods, which are used by economists to analyse policy and international trends.

placement option in business Through the Politics modules you’ll be supported to undertake in-depth study of political institutions, as well as critical social and political issues at both the national and the global level. You’ll have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience by undertaking a work placement in a political field (including potential placements with elected representatives, charitable organisations and local government) and you’ll also have the option to undertake a year long placement as a full-time employee in business.

Steve Howe, Politics BA(Hons) graduate, undertook his work placement with Yorkshire and the Humber TUC “As a mature student with previous work experience I wasn’t sure the placement element of the course would be useful for me. However I had an excellent placement which gave me some great opportunities to try things I hadn’t experienced before and pushed me out of my previous comfort zone. It also enabled me to make some excellent connections which I have maintained through the course and beyond.”

“My time at the University of Huddersfield allowed me to undergo a lot of extra-curricular activities and work experience whilst studying a wide range of topics. As work experience was an integrated part of my course, and as the Politics Society was very active on campus, there were plenty of opportunities to get involved! My lecturers really encouraged me to play a part in both the local and student community. I was able to practise public speaking, help with people’s problems and gain a deeper understanding of real life politics.”

Politics and Criminology BSc(Hons)

Crime exists in every world economy and the nature of crime is constantly changing. This means, however, that demand for understanding crime and for crime reduction and control is high, and continues to rise as societies attempt to address criminal behaviours. The world of politics is inextricably linked to crime, justice and policing. By studying these two closely related disciplines together, you’ll have the chance to develop a strong understanding of political processes, the criminal justice system, and the linkages between the two.

You’ll study popular conceptions of crime in the media, and focus on criminal action ranging from petty theft to state sponsored terrorism. The course aims to give you the theoretical grounding and relevant knowledge to develop critical analysis skills both in relation to contemporary political issues and to the workings of the criminal justice system. You’ll have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by undertaking a work placement (in a field such as youth justice, charitable organisations, education, the media or politics).

My student journey so far

Yusuf Ukadia Politics BSc(Hons)

“I grew up in Dewsbury, which is a politically interesting town at the moment. It was a marginal seat in the 2015 General Election”, explains Yusuf Ukadia, a Politics BSc(Hons) student.

I hope to work in a job where I can make a difference.

At Huddersfield, we believe that getting involved is crucial to studying politics, and Yusuf has taken opportunities to do After being interested in exactly that. “I volunteer for my science as a child, Yusuf turned local Labour Party, helping out his attentions to politics during with canvassing”, he explains. the time of the 2010 Election. “I “For my work placement, was in year 10 at the time. Hear why Pete enjoys teaching politics

Pete Woodcock Head of the Division of Criminology, Politics and Sociology

“I wanted to be a footballer or a chat show host!” says Pete Woodcock, recalling his childhood ambitions. “But I was always interested in politics. I remember watching the 1987 General Election. I spent my pocket money on buying the manifestos, of which I didn’t understand very much to be honest.” Born in Cornwall, Pete grew up in Eastleigh before studying at the London School of Economics. “Whilst studying government I became particularly interested in political ideas. I did a Master’s in Southampton and developed my Master’s thesis into a PhD thesis on political theory in the English Civil War.” Having joined the University of Huddersfield, Pete now lectures in political theory.

I often learn just as much as the students do! “One of the good things about politics is that everyone has their own perspective and lived experience. Teaching politics is fantastic because it’s one of those subjects where people’s opinions can challenge preconceptions. I often learn just as much as the students do. “My most memorable event at the University was the hustings we held ahead of the 2015 Election. What I particularly liked was that the event was about real politics and what really mattered to people. I feel that the University is quite literally in the heart of the community. It was an event for everyone.”
