We want you to feel like you matter. Like you belong. And we want you to receive the best teaching, from experts in their fields.

Our Psychology courses scored 91% for student satisfaction**

Within our Psychology teaching team, current areas of expertise include the fascinating world of criminal psychology, clinical psychology, military psychology (considering human behaviour and decision making in morally challenging situations), neuroscience and the validity of the polygraph (lie detector) machine. On the Counselling side, our teaching team’s areas of expertise currently include existential counselling, coaching and mentoring. The list goes on.

Our Psychology courses are all accredited by the British Psychological Society

And that’s not all. We’ve been the UK’s leading University for receiving National Teaching Fellowships to mark Britain’s best lecturers in Higher Education for the past eight years.

Plus, we’re happy to say that our Psychology courses scored 91% for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2015. If that’s not whetted your appetite, let us tell you about the facilities here at Huddersfield. I’m sure you can pronounce electroencephalogram, but we tend to just call it the EEG machine. It looks like a hair net, but can measure electrical activity within the brain. The EEG can be found in our Psychology labs, along with the polygraph (lie detector), the eye movement tracker and the Oculus Rift (an immersive virtual reality headset). Our Counselling labs are fitted with cameras and microphones, giving you the chance to practise your skills and receive detailed feedback on how you’re progressing. Make Huddersfield your first choice.

Millions of people across the world are affected by mental health issues each year. As stigma surrounding mental health continues to be eradicated, the demand for qualified counsellors increases, with more people seeking treatment and support for a range of issues. Also, the nature of employability is becoming increasingly complex. Health and social care agencies, community development, business and enterprise agencies are all seeking to employ staff with key skills, knowledge and abilities associated with successful ‘helping’. There is significant evidence to suggest that the demand for mentorship across the professions is growing at an ever increasing rate.

Our strong personal tutor system will support you in your studies throughout the course

Our Counselling labs support your studies This course aims to provide you with an appreciation of Counselling and Mentoring as disciplines, focussing on three key areas: an understanding of the main theories behind Counselling; Mentoring, the practice of using helping and mentoring skills; and personal reflection/development. Each year of this course features at least one module devoted to personal development, designed to help you develop knowledge of yourself, the world of work and how to manage your future career effectively.

You’ll have the opportunity to apply for European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) accreditation as a practitioner upon graduation

Psychology BSc(Hons)

Psychology explores the role of mental processes and social behaviours, while seeking to understand the physiological and neurobiological processes that underlie certain functions and actions. It involves exploring perception, cognition, the unconscious mind, emotion, motivation, personality and interpersonal relationships. A key feature of this course is its applied nature. You’ll be encouraged to consider how

to apply psychological theories to real-world (sometimes controversial) issues and evaluate their implications. Our teaching staff are actively involved in research and their teaching is influenced by this expertise. This course seeks to give you an invaluable insight into the nature of human behaviour that can be applied to a large number of situations, careers and further study.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the University of Huddersfield and can confidently say that the course I studied equipped me well for my career so far. I chose to study Psychology with Counselling as I knew I wanted to work therapeutically post-graduation. My course helped me to feel confident working with clients using psychological theories and therapeutic techniques. My student journey so far

Mike Wood Psychology BSc(Hons)

“I grew up in Otley, an old Yorkshire market town just north of Leeds. I’m from a proper Yorkshire family” explains Mike Wood, Psychology BSc(Hons) student. “I was always interested in science and I had a lot of pets when I was younger, so I wanted to be an astronaut or a vet!”

I find it fascinating.” Mike dreams of continuing his fascination with psychology by entering the professional arena of academia. “My plan for the future is to do a PhD. I hope to then move into teaching and lecturing, and to contribute to the research world.

It was Mike’s interest in science which eventually led him to studying Psychology at the University of Huddersfield. “The human brain is one of the least understood things on the planet. From astronaut ambitions to psychology research

Alex Bridger Senior Lecturer, Psychology

Alex grew up in Cambridge, and as a child had dreams to be a Formula One driver or an astronaut. “However, when I reached my teens I read a book by Carl Jung which was an account of his journey into psychoanalysis. That book got me interested in psychology and therapy as a career path. “During undergraduate study, I didn’t feel convinced with mainstream psychological explanations about people’s attitudes and behaviours. Only when I came across critical social psychological theories and qualitative research methods did I really become inspired about studying people, culture and place. My research focuses on ‘mobile’ methods of research such as psychogeographical walking, ‘go-along interviews’ and

It’s my aim to get students to places where they can see that there are alternatives to the dominant order of things in psychology and that they can ‘do’ the subject differently.”
