Welcome to Drama, Theatre and Performance Drama has much to contribute to the way in which we understand and create the world we live in. Studying Drama, Theatre and Performance at Huddersfield will help develop your practical, creative and critical skills in your chosen area. All of our staff have extensive experience of making theatre and performance in a wide variety of contexts and work together to provide the best possible learning experience for you. We believe that a thorough understanding of the history and theory of drama will enhance your practice and vice versa and our courses provide a good mix of both.

We believe in teaching through practice and through the practical application of ideas, we want to see you develop your own individual creativity and to be able to understand how to use that to produce intelligent, thoughtful and innovative performance work. We also have contact with a number of companies and practitioners who contribute to the course by giving performances, running classes, or providing experience of working in a professional environment. Courses combine theory and practice with plenty of opportunities to perform in front of live audiences. Our focus is on helping you to develop your own individual creative capacity and supporting you to produce intelligent, thoughtful and innovative work. Each term you’ll be performing in, or directing and devising, high quality productions. Our staff have all worked professionally so understand the world that you want to go into. Their expertise covers a broad range of contemporary performance ranging from physical theatre, to magic, to experimental theatre. You’ll have the opportunity to develop and deepen your practical skills such as actor training, performance making, directing, applied theatre, writing and technical theatre, and stage management.

Rather than the traditional work placements, where students are often observers rather than participants, we bring the work placement to you. We bring in a professional theatre company, to work intensively with you for three weeks culminating in a professionally realised final production. You’ll also have the opportunity to take part in, or observe, teaching by professional leading practitioners as well as attend a range of research seminars, conferences and public workshops. You’ll be performing and studying in an inspirational, specially converted Victorian building that houses excellent facilities including three adaptable theatre studios, supported by the latest technical equipment. We have state-of-the-art multimedia projection equipment, large studios with excellent sprung dance floors that allow large cast theatre/dance productions and professional technical staff whose ‘can-do’ attitude allows our students to try new and exciting ideas in a safe and supportive environment.

Opportunities to take part in our student-run, award-winning Doodle Theatre Company who perform and tour to external venues and festivals. * Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching. ** Percentage of students from this subject area who go on to work and/or further study within six months of graduating (Destinations of Leavers Survey).

Drama with Creative Writing BA(Hons) The two subject areas of Drama and Creative Writing have a natural affinity with each other. They are interrelated in terms of theory, practice and sensibility, with the world of drama providing one outlet for the work of creative writers and the writers often providing the raw material that supplies the structure for performance. The Drama team have all worked professionally and will help to increase your skill level in acting and performing, directing, creative use of technology and other theatre and performance related areas. The Creative Writing team are all published and performed writers who will encourage and help you to develop your writing across a whole range of creative media: theatre, film, television and radio; fiction; poetry; life-writing and other non-fiction categories.

Together, the academics and practitioners you study with will provide you with a highly creative and deeply investigative degree, where you not only develop your practice but also deepen your understanding of this combined subject area. We’ll help you to become a creative and reflective individual who can leave university with confidence in your abilities and, just as importantly, the knowledge and understanding to keep developing your creative practice throughout the rest of your life.

My student journey so far

Flo MacLennan Drama BA(Hons)

Flo knew Huddersfield was the university for her after coming to an Open Day and meeting the lecturers, “They were so welcoming and even reassured my mum that I would be in good hands. They have a genuine open door policy and really do put their heart and soul into their teaching. There is a mutual respect which makes it feels more like a family than a student lecturer relationship.” A lot of courses focus on individual styles and genres but here you study every aspect of theatre and performance with an even split of theory and practice.

Talking about the course she explains, “The lecturers take on board whatever you have to say or want to try and with their diverse range of specialisms they open up your mind to new ideas. I started out wanting to go into teaching but now I have discovered I love directing and that is what I would like to pursue as a career.” Flo loves the drama facilities, “The Milton building is an amazing place for us to study and there is never a shortage of space to rehearse and perform.” “By far my most memorable moment was taking part in the two week intensive where we worked with international theatre company, Duende. We spent two weeks intensively working on a production based on George Orwell’s ‘1984’ novel. It gave us the opportunity to experience working in the industry and I felt so proud when our families came to watch the final performance.”

Discovering who you are

Dr Ben Spatz Senior Lecturer, Drama, Theatre and Performance

Caught between his love of performing and enjoyment of alone time reading and writing, Ben struggled to find a career path which would satisfy both impulses. “For a long time I couldn’t find a situation in which I could be physically and vocally active and also intellectually stimulated – until I discovered academic theatre departments.”

You can come here and really focus on discovering what kind of theatre you want to make.

Starting out in musicals and summer camp acts, Ben explains, “I started to understand what is most important to me in theatre, it’s not the fancy lighting, big sets or dramatic scripts, it’s about discovering who you are and what it means to be human through combining body, voice, memory and imagination.”

choose to study drama at Huddersfield? According to Ben, “We are a team with diverse interests and truly care about our students. We have a wonderful drama building with three beautiful studio spaces. Essentially, you can come here and really focus on discovering what kind of theatre you want to make.”

Asking Ben about his area of expertise he explains, “First, using physical exercises, games, songs and character-based scenarios, I teach people how to develop precise performances that Originally from Massachusetes become more and more dynamic. Second, I help and since living in New York people understand the City, Poland and Germany, importance of embodied Ben came to Huddersfield knowledge in performing arts.” and describes it as “a great home for me.” So, why should people
