Music BMus(Hons)
This course offers a balance of musicological research, practical training in performance or composition, and vocational options. During the first year you’ll study a number of core subjects designed to give you a solid foundation. In the second and third years you'll have the opportunity to develop a specialism as a composer, performer or musicologist or you can maintain a broad range of subjects. Second and third year options are often geared towards careers, through the opportunity to study music’s role in the community, education, and the professional marketplace for music. Creative options include orchestration, songwriting and scoring and arranging for brass and wind.
Research-based options include historical performance, experimental music, film music, opera and musical theatre, analysis, music before 1600 and many more. You can also opt to take a year-long placement to broaden your skills and experience. You’ll have the chance to take part in a number of classical and popular directed ensembles – for example, Symphony Orchestra, Brass Band, Chamber Choir, Big Band, Symphonic Wind Orchestra, Opera Group and New Music Ensemble. Solo performers will receive individual tuition on their instrument in all years of study, except during the optional placement year.
Aimee Storton, Music BMus(Hons), placement at Opera North, Leeds My placement at Opera North was a fantastic opportunity for me to use skills which I developed on the course. It gave me the chance to explore roles within a music company and work in areas which I wouldn't have had chance to otherwise.

Music Performance BMus(Hons)
This course is aimed at performers with exceptional skills and potential in practical performance. Many students will undertake both solo and ensemble-based training over all three years, focusing on developing high-level technical skills and an ability to communicate expressive and imaginative ideas effectively in recitals. The course offers many opportunities for refining public performance, for example, through individual tuition, workshops, master classes, informal recitals, and chamber-music coaching. Complementary performance skills options allow you to learn conducting, improvisation, singing with movement, early music, and to work with small and larger staff-led ensembles, such as Brass Band, Wind Orchestra, University Choir, String Orchestra, Folk Group,
Big Band, Zappa Band, or Early Music Ensemble, amongst others. Modules supporting your core practical activities are drawn from a range of options, for example in research relating to medieval song, film music, opera and musical theatre, historical performance, orchestration, or music analysis. In the second and final years, most students will undertake a major recital on their instrument, as well as performing in other contexts. An optional placement year and vocational modules with guest speakers provide wide-ranging experience of careers options in music, including music education, music and law, studio work, session musicianship, events management, music in therapeutic contexts, or community music.
Christopher McElroy, graduated BMus(Hons) 1999, now Director of Music at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. The excellent teaching and training I received in the music department at the University of Huddersfield helped me to gain the skills necessary for my job today. In addition, the extensive resources of the music department provided me with a wide range of opportunities to explore a variety of different courses and extra-curricular activities.

Options are available in a range of areas, including computer composition, film music, and music education, amongst others.
