I love the diversity that Huddersfield students bring to our e-commerce operation; from textile and fashion, to brand management and even graphic design students, we have greatly benefitted from the enthusiasm and fresh ideas that students have brought. Whether it’s upcycling, styling photoshoots, providing content for our social media channels or processing the wide array of donated fashion we stock, students have made hundreds of thousands to help fight poverty all over the world!

The live projects I have taken part in have been genuine design-led experiences. We meet up with other students and academics to solve a problem and apply our skills to a brief. I have been able to add extra projects to my portfolio and gained recognition for these from the University and special guests who have been brought in. I have learned how to develop ideas, how to present them and how to produce an end result quickly when dealing with very tight deadlines.

P L A C E M E N T Y E A R A placement year during your undergraduate degree, is an excellent opportunity for you to gain first-hand experience in the industry of your creative field before you graduate. The placement year is for third year students and consists of either finding employment with an established company or setting up your own business, also known as the Enterprise Placement Year (EPY). You are not limited to one placement, but must complete a minimum of 36 weeks. Professional Practice Year The Professional Practice Year is for Architecture/Architecture (International) (RIBA Part 1) graduates who wish to continue on to the Master of Architecture. As part of the process of becoming a professionally-qualified Architect in the UK, graduates are required to complete a period of supervised practical training, 12 months of which is normally undertaken as the first year of the Master of Architecture course. Try working for yourself Instead of an internship or placement with an employer, why not think about setting up your own business or working for yourself? Enterprise Placement Year is an alternative placement where you can spend the year exploring, researching and starting in business or self-employment. You don’t need an earth-shattering new idea – this isn’t Dragons’ Den – just enthusiasm and ambition! Throughout the year you will have the support of The Enterprise Team, who’ll work closely with you to help you develop your ideas and make a success of your business.

My first placement was as an Assistant Photographer in Northumbria and my second was in Palma, Spain where I was the only photographer for a gallery. I would highly recommend people to take the opportunity to do a placement year.

During my placement at Paul Stott Design, I worked with clients and briefs to create new furniture ranges for dining and bedrooms. The designs were for a range of companies including John Lewis, Bensons for Beds, international suppliers and prisons. I saw projects right from the initial sketching stage through to Solidwork models, sampling and eventually the final product. Knowing how design works in the real world and directly influencing companies and designs gives you such a proud feeling. Especially when you see your creation in major stores worldwide.

Mohammed Nazmul Islam Studying Product Design BA/BSc(Hons)

On my placement year I worked as a Trainee Lingerie Buyer at Primark. The company didn’t just treat me as a student; I was able to contribute and present at meetings, voice my opinions and work on product development. My year at Primark has been extremely valuable and has taught me a lot regarding buying and the fast-paced fashion industry.

Placement Year

Taking a placement was the best decision I have made. It is an opportunity to explore multiple areas you are interested in without the pressure of needing to jump into a career. You experience a working environment and can build up valuable contacts for the future. Over the course of the year I worked at sportswear company Helly Hansen in Oslo and Carrington Textiles/Pincroft Dying and Printing. I’ve seen directly how the projects I have undertaken have been beneficial for both companies as certain ideas have been implemented based on my presentations.

Hannah Russell Studying Textile Practice (Surface Design) BA/BSc(Hons)

During my placement year at FaulknerBrowns Architects, I worked on a wide range of projects and design stages. I also enhanced my graphic skills, working on visuals and presentations for clients. I attended CPD training and got involved with a volunteering project. My year in industry helped me to develop a better understanding about life in a big practice and gain more experience in the field of architecture.

For most of my placement year I worked at Asher Levine’s New York studio where I started as an unpaid intern and, after seven months, I was a full-time employee in charge of a group of interns. At Asher’s studio I worked on a very wide range of projects from cruise ship costumes, to custom outfits for Nicki Minaj, to producing textiles for a high-end fashion line and assisting making a custom art piece to be displayed in the Museum of Modern Art. I also worked at Lee Paton’s studio as an embroidery intern working on items to be featured in Russian Vogue and at James Taylors and Son where I refined my skills as a cobbler. Because of my placement experiences, I am now applying for jobs with a full resume and portfolio with a vast range of work. What I learned on my placement year is invaluable and I am very proud of what I accomplished, physically and mentally!

Placement Year

Throughout my internship with Urban Nu, I was given an enormous amount of responsibility and gained masses of experience. I operated at the level of a professional interior designer – managing projects and presenting my designs to clients and contractors. The placement gave me the opportunity to improve my communication, professionalism and organisation. I was given the responsibilty of organising weekly professional development events with RIBA certified suppliers and ‘Lunch and Learn’ sessions with contractors, strengthening the companies links within industry. I made several strong links myself during this process and hope to keep these throughout my career, as my time at Urban Nu taught me that maintaining professional working relationships is essential to successful project management.

My placement was in four parts. I worked on garment construction at Me and Thee, which included creating patterns from design briefs and sewing garments - working on all elements of the garment from initial concepts to shipping. I spent the year helping Women’s Centre attendees with sewing projects that would help them communicate their emotions and learn a new skill, this in turn helped me to develop my confidence in leading and teaching classes and taught me key interpersonal skills when dealing with vulnerable people. I spent six months preparing made-to-measure jacket alterations at the Carl Stuart factory and made the main outfit for the Huddersfield Carnival Queen which took centre stage in the procession. Overall I feel that I have grown into a more rounded adult, ready for the fashion industry.

Placement Year

Whilst on placement at NestlĂŠ in Germany, I supported the Packaging and Design team through a variety of projects using my design skills and knowledge. My role was split between communication design, aiding with graphic design based resource for the international Research & Development Centre, as well as packaging design where I assisted with rapid art working and prototyping of exciting new packaging concepts for their International Ambient Culinary brands. Working with NestlĂŠ gave me a bigger perspective of working with an international company to a strict standard due to their acclaimed reputation. The role came with a lot of responsibility but with guidance from my fellow team members I was able to learn how to apply my design practice in a professional and consistent way.

The School of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Huddersfield was like a family to me. While studying and working here, I have made a lot of friends who are now some of the most important collaborators for my recent work projects. What I have gained is not only knowledge but also confidence, friendship, new skill sets and a lot of fun. Scott Le Digital Designer at Intermarketing Agency* Contemporary Art and Illustration BA(Hons), 2017

The lecturers were always on hand whenever you needed them. The tutors and the lecturers come form industry so you are getting up to date knowledge. The main thing that impressed me about Huddersfield is that everyone around you is happy to help.

James Orchard Senior Technical Analyst at GL Hearn* Architectural Technology BSc(Hons), 2014

During my four years at the University of Huddersfield I have gained a lot of experience which has helped me to understand exactly what I want my career to be. I can say a massive thank you to the tutors who supported and advised us throughout the years. University helped me to work outside of my comfort zone and boosted my confidence, especially during placement year.

As I was looking for a career in textile design, the Surface Design course at the University of Huddersfield was the perfect option as it allowed me to pull together my interests in both textiles and fine art/illustration, leading me down the path to become a commercial print designer. I now work as a Designer for Wilko where I am responsible for the design of cushions, bedding and wallpaper ranges.

Laura Ensinger Junior Print Designer at Wilko Textiles with Surface Design BA(Hons), 2016

My time studying Illustration at the University of Huddersfield allowed me to grow as an artist, helping me to learn about different career paths and creative outlets. It was during my time here that I was able to experiment with styles, gain an insight into the industry from my tutors and make valuable friendships. Now working as a freelance illustrator under the name of Happy Mouse Studio, I’ve been able to use the skills I learnt during my degree to further my work in the industry.

I look back on my five years at Huddersfield School of Architecture with great affection. The School gave me a fantastic grounding in drawing and designing. Readily available tuition also built up my confidence. The School’s emphasis on understanding context has proved invaluable to my later success within the profession.

I was a Fashion Design with Marketing and Production student at the University where I found my passion for designing and had my final collection used in a Vidal Sassoon photoshoot. I loved being a part of such an amazing University and I’m still in touch with some of my tutors who were there through thick and thin to offer advice and support. Through hard-work and dedication I received a first in my degree and went on to set up my own online swimwear brand sianmarie.com furthermore becoming the winner of The Apprentice 2018! Sian Gabbidon Winner of The Apprentice 2018 Owner of Sian Marie Fashion Design with Marketing and Production BA(Hons), 2014

My university experience was great, it taught me about the early stages of design thinking. Design thinking is important as a creative, it’s how you show value in design from the discovery phase all the way to delivery. Being able to show the process and the story behind how the idea evolved is how you can get buy-in from not just your tutors, but future stakeholders and clients. Think storytelling but done visually, have pride in your ideation and creative thinking as much as your final delivery piece. Growing up as a design practitioner when interviewing new upcoming talent, I care more about designers thought process, also how does he or she apply design principles to their work and show value. At adidas, I’m in charge of the practice of User Interface Design across adidas’s digital touchpoints globally. Imagine a style guide but at scale. Everything from how design is used across our digital channels including our design principles and how motion is applied, working closely with our experience design and brand strategy teams. I’m currently living and working in Amsterdam but often travel to Germany, London and Portland for business and most recently, Calabasas, Los Angeles to work with Kanye West and the YEEZY team.

Alumni My time at the University of Huddersfield has shaped who I am today, both personally and professionally. Throughout the course, I had weekly tutorials with the Course Leaders, allowing my practice to develop rapidly. There was no particular box that we had to fit in to; we were encouraged to explore our own interests freely. This freedom and quality time is what made Huddersfield such a great place to study. I have been working in a curatorial role for almost five years and am part of the British Art Network’s Early Career Curators Group with Tate and the Paul Mellon Centre. Previous to my current role at York Art Gallery I have worked at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle and the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull. Becky Gee Curator of Fine Art, York Art Gallery Contemporary Art BA(Hons), 2012

My time at the University of Huddersfield has rewarded me with great memories, a bigger brain, personal development and professional skills in the fields of fashion and business. Thanks to the strong industry links of the University, I was fortunate enough to experience a year in industry working at Go Outdoors as a Product Development Assistant, improving my professional skills further. On completion of my degree, I was able to land a job at one of my favourite retailers - size? where I have begun a two-year graduate scheme. Huddersfield was my first home in England and I couldnt be happier about that. The University was an excellent place for me to get prepared for the industry of my career. In addition to having excellent facilities available for my use, my tutors advised me to push myself to work in other areas of photography which led me to create my best work. I am very thankful for everything the University of Huddersfield offered me. I chose to study Surface Design at Huddersfield because it was a varied course that gave you an opportunity to do a year in industry. I got the chance to work at places such as Liberty, Marks and Spencer and Jonathan Saunders. This invaluable experience made me realise what the commercial industry was like. Since graduating, I now work as a Print Designer for Joules. Dan Matthews UK Winner of the Society of Dyers and Colourists International Design Competition 2014 Print Designer at Joules* Textiles with Surface Design BA(Hons), 2014

I’ve always enjoyed fashion and wanted to turn this into a career, but was unsure which career path I wanted to go down. Fashion Communication and Promotion enabled me to learn about different areas and find my strengths. The placement year as well as University resources only fueled my confidence and knowledge, not only about my field of study, but how I work best as an individual, within a group, and leading a team. I’m confident in my role as a Brand Communications Assistant for Kurt Geiger and I can’t wait to see what the next steps bring! My time at the University of Huddersfield was an amazing experience. Studying Costume, I was able to gain insight into many different areas of this sector which has allowed me to understand where my passions lie and where I want my career path to take me. The facilities are excellent and the tutors support, advice and feedback enable you to push and develop your ideas. The placement year is a fantastic opportunity and the knowledge, connections and friendship that I gained during this year enabled my creative practice to improve and progress. I have met so many fantastic people throughout my time at Huddersfield and I have made brilliant friendships, gained excellent skills and knowledge and developed my confidence within my practice.

Studying at the University of Huddersfield allowed me to take part in projects all over the world including Barcelona, India, Brazil, Berlin and Venice. After graduating, this experience really helped me to stand out from the crowd. The academic staff are second-to-none. With their guidance and motivation they inspired me to produce work on a level I never thought I’d be able to achieve. Now I work for one of the most highly respected design studios in the country and I owe it all to the dedication of the teaching staff at the University of Huddersfield.

Architectural technology is something I always wanted to do - all my options at college were based on me doing architecture at university. I was interested in the detailing and the technical side of buildings - I undertook an Architecture and Interior Design foundation year from 2006 -2007 before moving on to Architectural Technology BSc (Hons). The University of Huddersfield Interior Design course is highly recommended in terms of industry standard. The staff are extremely supportive whether that be delivering to a year group or on an individual basis, you are enabled to have the freedom of your own creative outlet. When I first visited the course on an Open Day I knew I was going to settle here, one of the deciding factors being the University’s pre-existing relationships within the industry and placement opportunities. The main and most important thing I have learnt during my time on the Costume with Textiles course at the University of Huddersfield was to go beyond my limits. I remember being once told by my tutor during our weekly one-to-one meetings, that now is the time to let my imagination run wild and be as experimental and innovative in my work as possible. I learnt that the limits can always be pushed and you should never settle for the first idea. The course gave me a great amount of artistic freedom whilst still providing expert teaching and guidance in creating and making costumes. When working with small or medium size companies it is very important to be versatile. Thanks to various skills I learnt during the course I am able to work at all the levels of costume production, from designing, through pattern making, textile printing and making the costume. Karolina Luisoni Costume Designer and Maker at the Opéra de Lausanne, Switzerland Costume with Textiles BA(Hons), 2013

I never thought I would find myself designing and working on the spaces that helped me prepare for the very career that I’m currently in. As a friend of mine once said “Just go for it. The worst thing they can say to you is no.” University is the one place to make as many leaps of faith as you need to before the real work begins.
