The Professional Practice Year is for Architecture/Architecture (International) (RIBA Part 1) graduates who wish to continue on to the Master of Architecture. As part of the process of becoming a professionally-qualified Architect in the UK, graduates are required to complete a period of supervised practical training, 12 months of which is normally undertaken as the first year of the Master of Architecture course. Try working for yourself Instead of an internship or placement with an employer, why not think about setting up your own business or working for yourself? Enterprise Placement Year is an alternative placement where you can spend the year exploring, researching and starting in business or self-employment. You don’t need an earth-shattering new idea – this isn’t Dragons’ Den – just enthusiasm and ambition! Throughout the year you will have the support of The Enterprise Team, who’ll work closely with you to help you develop your ideas and make a success of your business. Moving abroad for my internship at Nestlé was a big step but adjusting to life in Germany was much easier than I expected. The social side was really fun as a large group organised hikes, bike rides, meals and nights out. I was also able to continue with a passion from home – ice hockey. I did my research and found a local team that were happy for me to join up and we’re even arranging a game between my new team and my home team in Bradford. Being close to Lake Konstanz and a short drive from the Swiss mountains, there was always so much to do with new friends. Together we hiked to Seealpsee Lake and cycled to Stein am Rhein but one of my favourite experiences was Fastnacht (Carnival). It was incredible to see everyone dressed up in amazing costumes and masks parading in the streets. My experience at Nestlé was incredible, I learned so many new things and worked with many different people from other departments within the NPTC (Nestlé Product Technology Centre). I have made many memories which I will cherish forever. Moving to Germany has given me an insight into living and working in another country and has made me think about the possibility of living and working abroad when I graduate.

My industry placement year started in Delft, the Netherlands, working with woven textile designer Aleksandra Gaca. It was a dream come true to see behind the scenes and in the studio of such an inspiring Dutch designer. I worked as Aleksandra’s assistant, overseeing the logistics of several commercial design briefs, as well as her latest collection ‘BRAIDS’ which was debuted at Dutch Design Week. My second placement was with Botany Weaving Mill in Dublin, Ireland. Specialising in aviation fabrics and carpets, Botany allowed me to see the workings of a busy, successful textiles business. Having looms on site meant I got to see both the design studio and industrial mill. Throughout my time in Dublin, I was involved with trend work, colour work, digital design and overseeing the jacquard design for several commercial airline projects. In addition, I was lucky enough to have the chance to weave some of my own designs which were put forward for their annual collection. I would definitely recommend a placement abroad, I got lots of support from the University and it is a great chance to absorb other cultures and therefore such a great source of creative inspiration. Doing a placement year has made me feel more confident about starting my final year with a whole host of new skills and knowledge about the textile industry.

Placement Year
For my placement year I was fortunate enough to work in two different firms. Initially, I worked as a Product Design Placement Student with the Paxman Innovation and Research Centre, designing a medical product aimed at helping cancer patients to reduce hair loss during chemotherapy as well as several other projects. We followed the design and development process diligently and I was able to learn new software and improve other skills such as communication and organisation. I also worked in commercial design development with Brewfitt Ltd. This was a different experience and I was able to explore faster paced product development, creating technical drawings and designing graphics for products and the website. Placement year gave me a real understanding of the work environment and what would be expected of me when I graduate. I was able to work on different kinds of projects and learned how to use and improve the tools we are taught at university. I would recommend taking a placement to all students as it gives you a clear idea of what we are working towards.

My placement year was spent at S+SA Architects in Harrogate where I was taken on as a Junior Architectural Technologist. During my placement I have worked in a variety of sectors including retail, residential and logistics, I have learned a great deal about the built environment, from building design and detailing, masterplanning/site planning and also the more formal side of the job, such as communicating with other professionals, how to organise and file my projects properly and how an architectural practice operates. I would recommend to any student to seek out a placement. It has benefitted me in many ways, setting me up for a fantastic final year and start to my career. I am fortunate that, after a successful year, my placement firm would like me to work part-time during my final year and return full-time after graduation which shows just how beneficial a placement can be and how it provides a fantastic start to your future career.

Placement Year
The main highlight of my placement year was working alongside such esteemed professionals at companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company, Black Country Living Museum and the Birmingham Royal Ballet. It gave me such a great insight into how the industry is structured and how costume construction can vary between company practices. I also got to dress for the West End tour of Priscilla Queen of the Desert and that was incredibly fun! It gave me the knowledge of working on a running show and coordinating with professional performers. I couldn’t recommend the placement year more. Though my placement year was unfortunately cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I still made excellent industry connections and learnt an immense amount of new skills and practices that I might not have achieved without the experience of working within the industry. Not only has it greatly enhanced my CV, but it has given me the confidence that I am an ideal candidate for similar graduate roles due to this experience. The University of Huddersfield offer great support and guidance surrounding the placement year and I believe that the year out in industry is one of the courses greatest assets.
I had the opportunity to complete my placement at The Way we Build – an architectural office in Amsterdam. Working in a small office environment was a really good experience because I was able to be hands-on in numerous projects. I was given tasks such as developing plans and elevations for projects, assisting in different design stages and model-making. I have learned a lot through working on diverse projects and working in another country exposed me to different design and building styles and disciplines. The advice I would give to students looking to take a placement year is to ask a lot of questions and to make the most of it, enjoy every minute as it goes by fast!

Isabelle Miners, Costume with Textiles student, entered The Society of Colourists and Dyers Competition, and the theme this year was ‘Colour and the Universe’. Being a student who enjoys both print and embroidery, Izzy decided to include both within the fabric designs that she created. The final fabric design is made up of a collection of Isabelle’s drawings and embroideries that she put together in Photoshop and then had digitally printed. The fabric Isabelle made she then turned into two garments, a kimono style garment and an asymmetric dress. Fidelia Florentia
In June 2020, Architecture final year Fidelia Florentia was awarded top prize at the Women in Property Yorkshire and North East Student Awards 2020. The National Student Awards programme was established to seek out top built environment students each year and raise awareness of the many amazing and diverse career opportunities offered across this industry. The Women in Property team asked each of the 15 finalists to submit a oneminute video showcasing themselves and their work, which they loaded onto YouTube. An award ceremony took place over Zoom. Fidelia, along with one other regional winner, will represent the Yorkshire & North East region at the national final, which will hopefully be held on 16th September in London.

The Campaign for Wool Student Design Competition is a year-long event bringing together leading brands and retailers with universities from across the UK, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa. Companies task the students with creating innovative products made out of wool with the hope of raising awareness about the benefits of wool and to grow the industry. This year’s brand challenges included the creation of an overcoat inspired by the architecture of London’s South Bank for Anderson & Sheppard, with Textiles student Emma Herst taking home the prize. Fellow Textiles student Louisa Knapp also walked away as a winner, having designed and developed a new design for a Margo Selby interior and accessory cloth in collaboration with Alternative Flooring. The Offspring Photo Meet awards was a brilliant experience. I was given the opportunity to talk about my current photography work as well as listen to contemporary practitioners from around the country. It was inspiring to gain constructive feedback from the reviewers who also offered insights into their practice. Alongside this, I was selected for a mentorship with Rachel Brown (Photography Director at Harper’s Bazaar) who has been offering me professional advice and support towards expanding my career in photography.
In the second year of Graphic Design we were introduced to YCN Live Briefs, which are put out by real companies such as Stance and hmv. I jumped at the opportunity to take on a live brief! The hmv brief was to reimagine their stores and build a new branding campaign for them. I took it upon myself to create a campaign which will drive new customers into their stores; while also being suitable across all forms of media. Taking inspiration from Camper, I reimagined hmv’s store layout so each shop would be unique whilst keeping the same colour palette throughout, particularly using hmv pink which is seen as an indication of hmv today.

Natasha Henderson
Interior Design student Natasha Henderson entered the RetailEXPO Student Design Awards this year, opting to take on the Berghaus brief. The brief called for a full-price retail environment that could be a permanent flagship or a pop-up store, but should present the Berghaus brand is an engaging way, encouraging repeat visits and bringing the products to life. Students were asked to consider how the store could be the centre of a community, and how it would connect to the digital world. Natasha’s design concept centred round a campfire, and put the customer at the heart of the store. “The customer journey is very well considered, as is creating an appropriate experience. The retail aspects are resolved in a way that would work commercially,” said the judges. 30 Art, Design and Architecture | Huddersfield
Two of our Fashion Design 2020 graduates were selected as the University winners of the TikTok x GFF Design Competition. TikTok looked to the Class of 2020 to design a line that is distinctly TikTok. Emily Harper and Claire Flower were invited to London to participate in a 5-day TikTok residency in July, where they produced items from their design concepts for TikTok to gift to their influencer community. During the week of their residency, Claire and Emily brought their ideas to life and had the opportunity to showcase the final garments to the TikTok team and Henry Holland.

Choosing to study at Huddersfield was the best decision I have ever made. The Textiles course shows the possibilities of the textile industry and provided hands on practical experience with fantastic tutors. I loved it! During my time at University I met amazing people both on my course and in halls of residence. I made incredible memories with my friends during my University years and continue to do so after we graduated.
My time at the University of Huddersfield has been invaluable. These last four years have taught me so much and allowed me to grow as a person and in my profession. The Product Design course is very well structured and the lecturers are amicable and eager to help, while also wanting to get to know you as a person. I will always be grateful for their time and the time I have spent at Huddersfield. I would highly recommend the course and the year in industry that comes with it as they are great preparation for what the industry has in store.

Studying at The University of Huddersfield gave me a competitive edge in the creative industry. Through work placements, live briefs and projects that challenged our way of thinking - we were guided to explore and create innovative design solutions, that would be sustainable and engaging in professional environments. With amazing tutors and lecturers, there was always someone available to help you through the highs and lows: from managing workloads and deadlines, to succeeding with awards! I have and will always highly value the experiences that have built such a strong foundation for the strategies and methods of working that I use today. Studying Graphic Design at the University of Huddersfield was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I look back on my time here with very fond memories and have gained a bank of experience for which I cannot thank the University enough for. The facilities available to you and the dedication and support of the academic tutors are second-to-none. Links to industry and opportunities available to you are also very impressive. My optional placement year took me to Germany to work as a Design Intern with Nestlé, which I loved and played a huge part in my personal professional development.

After my time at Huddersfield I have been left with many fantastic memories, but the most memorable part of the last three years for me would have to be the international trip to Malaysia and Singapore. Having never left the continent before, this trip was a big eye opener for me where I learnt about different cultures, their ways of life and, of course, their architecture. Being able to experience this with my course-mates and best friends was a truly unforgettable experience. Other than the obvious architectural skills and new found confidence that university has given me, I have met some of my best friends, seen some amazing places and made lifelong memories. University has been the best three years and I cannot thank the amazing staff enough.

My time at the University of Huddersfield has shaped who I am today, both personally and professionally. Throughout the course, I had weekly tutorials with the Course Leaders, allowing my practice to develop rapidly. There was no particular box that we had to fit in to; we were encouraged to explore our own interests freely. This freedom and quality time is what made Huddersfield such a great place to study. I have been working in a curatorial role for almost five years and am part of the British Art Network’s Early Career Curators Group with Tate and the Paul Mellon Centre. Design thinking is important as a creative, it’s how you show value in design from the discovery phase all the way to delivery. Being able to show the process and the story behind how the idea evolved is how you can get buy-in from not just your tutors, but future stakeholders and clients. Think storytelling but done visually, have pride in your ideation and creative thinking as much as your final delivery piece. Growing up as a design practitioner when interviewing new upcoming talent, I care more about designers thought process, also how does he or she apply design principles to their work and show value. At adidas, I’m in charge of the practice of User Interface Design across adidas’s digital touchpoints globally. Imagine a style guide but at scale. Everything from how design is used across our digital channels including our design principles and how motion is applied, working closely with our experience design and brand strategy teams. I’m currently living and working in Amsterdam but often travel to Germany, London and Portland for business and most recently, Calabasas, Los Angeles to work with Kanye West and the YEEZY team.

I learnt so much whilst at Huddersfield, and I was really able to nurture my skill set and find out what I really wanted to do after I finished. I love the fact that you’re able to try a lot of different things and run with ideas you may not ordinarily be able to do in the real world of work whilst at uni, and for that I am really thankful. It helps you to fine tune your approach to things and you quickly learn how to tackle briefs and projects. I definitely learnt a lot about myself too, in that I could handle the mounds of work and tight deadlines I was faced with, so long as I kept believing in myself; and it really did pay off as cliche as it sounds! University is never plain sailing and there’s always ups and downs, but I am so grateful for my time at Huddersfield, the people I’ve met and the work I’ve created. I’m definitely a stronger person because of it. Rachel Langan Digital Marketing Executive at Impression Fashion Brand Marketing BA(Hons), 2020

Huddersfield was my first home in England and I couldnt be happier about that. The University was an excellent place for me to get prepared for the industry of my career. In addition to having excellent facilities available for my use, my tutors advised me to push myself to work in other areas of photography which led me to create my best work. I am very thankful for everything the University of Huddersfield offered me. I chose to study Surface Design at Huddersfield because it was a varied course that gave you an opportunity to do a year in industry. I got the chance to work at places such as Liberty, Marks and Spencer and Jonathan Saunders. This invaluable experience made me realise what the commercial industry was like. Since graduating, I now work as a Print Designer for Joules. I’ve always enjoyed fashion and wanted to turn this into a career, but was unsure which career path I wanted to go down. Fashion Communication and Promotion enabled me to learn about different areas and find my strengths. The placement year as well as University resources only fueled my confidence and knowledge, not only about my field of study, but how I work best as an individual, within a group, and leading a team. I’m confident in my role as a Brand Communications Assistant for Kurt Geiger and I can’t wait to see what the next steps bring! “Studying Architecture at Huddersfield has been an experience that opened my eyes to new possibilities and career opportunities. The diversity of experience from the tutors and their own work inspired me to strive for bigger and better goals for my career and gave me direct access to the best industry practices and skills. The emphasis on peer review and collaboration in the studio pushed me to improve my work and skills too. The trips abroad, learning about other cultures and places have been the highlight of my studies and an aspect of architecture I want to continue learning and practicing. I was also able to win a number of different competitions as well as exhibit my work around the UK, due to my tutor’s support and industry knowledge. Studying at Huddersfield prepared me for work as I was prompted to learn a number of different tools and develop the right skills such as learning software, model making, and presentation skills. These where essential to setting me apart from other candidates to gain the position I now have. I have been working for a multinational practice for over a year, working on international and UK architectural projects and the skills I developed at University are being used daily.”
Niza Nyimbili Part II Architectural Assistant at BDP
The University of Huddersfield was, for me, more than a place to study and learn about architecture. The academic staff have been an inspiration to me. They have always guided and motivated me to produce my best work and prepared me for my future career in practice and I will always be grateful to them. The people I met here became my family from away over the years and one of my best memories were made at University of Huddersfield. For my year out, I undertook a placement at FaulknerBrowns Architects where I enjoyed working on a wide variety of projects, in particular sports and leisure buildings, which was exciting and challenging as I’ve never worked on this type of building before. I enjoyed taking part in volunteering projects throughout the year and attending events organised by the firm, which were always a good networking opportunity. The year in practice gave me a taste of the life as an architect in a big practice and challenged me to develop my skills in a professional context, preparing me for my future career as an architect.

The School of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Huddersfield was like a family to me. While studying and working here, I have made a lot of friends who are now some of the most important collaborators for my recent work projects. Architectural technology is something I always wanted to do - all my options at college were based on me doing architecture at university. I was interested in the detailing and the technical side of buildings - I undertook an Architecture and Interior Design foundation year from 2006 -2007 before moving on to Architectural Technology BSc (Hons).
The main and most important thing I have learnt during my time on the Costume with Textiles course at the University of Huddersfield was to go beyond my limits. I remember being once told by my tutor during our weekly one-to-one meetings, that now is the time to let my imagination run wild and be as experimental and innovative in my work as possible. I learnt that the limits can always be pushed and you should never settle for the first idea. The course gave me a great amount of artistic freedom whilst still providing expert teaching and guidance in creating and making costumes. When working with small or medium size companies it is very important to be versatile. Thanks to various skills I learnt during the course I am able to work at all the levels of costume production, from designing, through pattern making, textile printing and making the costume.

I never thought I would find myself designing and working on the spaces that helped me prepare for the very career that I’m currently in. As a friend of mine once said “Just go for it. The worst thing they can say to you is no.” University is the one place to make as many leaps of faith as you need to before the real work begins.

The University of Huddersfield Interior Design course is highly recommended in terms of industry standard. The staff are extremely supportive whether that be delivering to a year group or on an individual basis, you are enabled to have the freedom of your own creative outlet. When I first visited the course on an Open Day I knew I was going to settle here, one of the deciding factors being the University’s pre-existing relationships within the industry and placement opportunities. Student profile “I chose to study Graphic Design in my final year of sixth form. I knew I was good at art and design, but I never really understood what graphic design was until one of my sixth form tutors introduced me to the works of Stephan Bundi and David Carson. The fact that it was someone’s actual job to create visuals and posters that communicate through a balance of type and image captivated me, and it was at that point I knew that graphic design was the route for me. Apart from the lifelong friendships, what I’ll take away from university is the ability to think creatively and conceptually; not only about my work, but in all aspects of my life.” Jack Freeman Graphic Design BA(Hons), 2020
