Chemical engineering delves into how chemical reactions can be scaled up for industrial manufacturing. This course gives you the chance to become fluent in both areas of chemistry and chemical engineering and set yourself up for career opportunities in a wide range of industries that rely upon the ability to integrate both disciplines.

Our Chemistry BSc(Hons) is taught by academics in specialist areas of chemistry who are all educated to doctoral level in their subjects and involved in forward-thinking research. This course covers the core areas chemistry, as well as giving you the chance to explore more specialist options during your studies. In the third year of the course you’ll have the opportunity to benefit from a work placement. This could help you to gain relevant real-world experience and give you a head start in your chosen career. In the final year you’ll have the chance to develop and hone your independent research skills as part of the research project module. We also firmly believe in ‘learning through doing’ and since fieldwork is an integral part of any environmental scientists training, we’ve embedded field-trips throughout all years of study. Where this four-year undergraduate Master’s course differs from the Pharmaceutical Chemistry BSc(Hons) is that the third year is a compulsory UK placement year in industry, a government agency or academic research group, where you can combine in-depth academic study with gaining valuable real-world experience.

If you don’t have the appropriate qualifications for direct entry to one of our science based degrees, you can apply to our Science Extended Degree. Getting stuck into the four main disciplines of biology, chemistry, maths and physics, you’ll have the chance to get a grounding in the scientific knowledge you’ll need no matter which route you eventually decide to take.
Course length: Year 0 of a 4–5 year degree
Guided by teaching staff, who are all educated to doctoral level in their respective areas of expertise, you’ll get to grips with subject areas through lectures, tutorials, seminars and hands-on practicals in modern chemical sciences labs. From day one you’ll be supported to build up your knowledge, develop your logical reasoning skills, establish an imaginative approach to solving problems and practising the skills that are sought after by a wide range of industries. All of the aspects of this course are designed to boost your employability in a wide range of roles and industries once you graduate.

B in Chemistry at A Level. *The endorsement for practical work is an essential part of Science A Level study, and is a requirement for entry to our degree course. **Alternatively a BTEC Health and Social Care/Medicinal Science is acceptable but must be accompanied by an A Level in Chemistry at a minimum grade C.

Progression onto Chemical Engineering MEng is dependent on achieving a minimum pass mark of 60% in the Maths and Physics module, plus an overall pass mark of at least 70%. ***Progression onto Optometry BSc(Hons) and Pharmacy MPharm is dependent on meeting stringent performance levels in the Science Extended Degree. You must pass all modules with an overall pass mark of at least 70%. Plus at least 70% in the Chemistry in Action, and Math and Physics modules. You must also successfully undertake an interview with the Optometry or Pharmacy admissions staff.

We have invested £18.2m in new science facilities and laboratories for Applied Sciences students. In the Joseph Priestley Building you’ll study in a modern learning environment using professional standard equipment, supported by staff with a blend of industry experience and research excellence.
Whether you have come to university straight from school or college, after some years in work or raising a family, you may find that the required skills are different. Academic Skills Tutors in Applied Sciences are here to help you understand what is expected. They provide a secure and confidential space to discuss any academic skills issues you may have or even just to confirm you are on track. You’ll have the opportunity to develop and build on the skills you need to succeed, whatever challenges you may face throughout your course.

Changes to a course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment. Changes to your course after you enrol as a student We will always try to deliver your course and other services as described. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below: Changes to option modules Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year. Major changes We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum. For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. If this is your first (undergraduate) degree and you want to study a full-time course, then you’ll apply via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) at ucas.com
If you want to start your course in September 2022, you can apply through UCAS any time from September 2021 onwards. Please make sure UCAS receives your application by the first application deadline in January 2022. Please see hud.ac/faa for more information.
If you’re at a college or school right now, it’s probably already registered with UCAS. The best thing to do is ask your teacher or careers adviser to help with your application. Once you’ve applied we’ll keep in touch with you throughout the application process, so you’re up to speed with what’s going on.

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.
