Nursing associates work across all fields of nursing including adult, children’s, mental health and learning disability, alongside healthcare support workers and registered nurses to deliver care for patients and the public. In the role you’ll discuss and share information with registered nurses on a patients’ condition, behaviour, activity and responses; support individuals and their families and carers when faced with unwelcome news and life-changing diagnoses; undertake and record clinical observations including blood pressure, temperature, respirations and pulse, as well as recognising issues relating to safeguarding.

This course is designed to equip you with the necessary skills, abilities and knowledge to meet the rapidly expanding and changing environment in health and social care. From looking at how to assess needs to being introduced to law, social policy, assessment and care planning. You’ll explore your own values in relation to working with diverse groups, and engage in becoming a reflective practitioner.

BSc(Hons)

You’ll learn how to respond to the physical, cognitive and mental healthcare needs of all patients and service users across their lifespan. Supported by a team who really understand what it’s like to be a nursing associate, you’ll learn through face to face and online lectures, seminars, group work, simulation and role play. Through clinical placements you’ll practise and develop your skills in a range of statutory, private and voluntary services, in order to prepare you to pursue your career.

You’ll be taught by a supportive and experienced teaching team who have worked in a range of health and social care roles. They’ll use their expertise to bring their teaching to life with real-life case studies. Personal and professional development, leadership and international perspectives are keen components of this course, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills and putting you in a good position for both the UK and international jobs market. There is an option to study this course as an integrated Master’s degree, combining both undergraduate and postgraduate study into a single four-year degree.

After successfully completing the course you’ll be eligible for entry on to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) professional register.

Taking a hands-on approach, you’ll have the opportunity to put your theoretical skills into practice through undertaking a work placement. This will support and enhance your learning, increase your future employability prospects and give you the chance to make useful contacts in industry so that you can reach your full potential.

Placements are a compulsory element of the course where you’ll experience 24 hours and 7 day care. You’ll spend 50% of your time on the course on placement in a variety of settings providing care across the lifespan. Whilst undertaking your clinical placements you’ll work alongside qualified supervisors and assessors who will provide any help and support you require.

Your future Once qualified the course offers you a wide variety of career opportunities to work within the NHS and wider sector. This could include working in GP surgeries, hospitals, primary care, hospices and nursing homes. In addition you could also undertake further study and join the second year of the Nursing BSc(Hons) course.

Your future This course aims to give you the knowledge, understanding and core skills required to pursue a wide range of careers in a variety of statutory or non-statutory, community or residential health and social care settings. Graduates might go onto work for drug and alcohol services, housing agencies, domestic violence services, disability and wellbeing services, teaching, and relevant Master’s courses such as Social Work and Nursing.

Medical Engineers play a vital role in the healthcare sector from maintaining, developing, and improving the components in medical instruments, to identifying the best materials to use in prosthetics or joint replacements. So if you’re looking for a rewarding career that really makes a difference to people’s lives this course could be for you.

Medical Engineering Technologies BEng(Hons)

Our Midwifery Studies degree is designed to help you become a competent, confident and autonomous practitioner with the knowledge and skills to pursue a successful career. Learning from experienced midwives and gaining real-world experience in a variety of healthcare settings will prepare you to make a difference in the lives of women and their families.

Course length: 3 years full-time

The course begins by covering the fundamentals of mechanical and electronic engineering, so you’re confident in the basics. You’ll learn the necessities but from a healthcare perspective, learning about mechatronics and robotics. Then in your second year we’ll introduce you to anatomy, specifically gait analysis, which is the study of joint biomechanics and the movement of the legs and feet during walking and running. You’ll look at material properties, learning how materials are selected to operate in the challenging environment of the human body. You’ll also learn how medical imaging technologies work, with hands on experience of X-Ray machines, CT scans and Ultrasonic technologies, which brings together both electronic and mechanical engineering. Human disease and injury will be covered in the final year, we’ll get you thinking about the consequences and potential diagnosis options. You’ll also look at the range of individualised medical devices, and their mechanical design techniques, which includes 3D printing solutions.

Your future During your studies you have the chance to take a placement after your second year. You could work in the industry and put what you’ve learnt into practice. We’ll also give you the opportunity to join our student teams who take part in national events like the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Formula Student, Railway Challenge, and Unmanned Aircraft Systems Challenge competitions (or comparable design and build competitions). You’ll work alongside fellow students from different engineering disciplines, which reflects how you’ll work in industry. Careers you could consider after completing your degree could be a medical device specialist, medicines and healthcare regulatory official, manufacturing engineer, or a bioengineer, to name a few.

We know just how important it is for midwives to learn about midwifery in context, gain a broad perspective on the delivery of care and be supported by enthusiastic lecturers who know exactly what it’s like to be a midwife. Across all areas of teaching, we focus on the promotion of normality, health and the safe management of pregnancy to ensure the best possible outcomes for parents and the newborn. We’ll also help you learn how to provide individualised care for the mother and baby throughout pregnancy, labour, childbirth and the early days of parenthood.

Placements Gaining clinical experience is key to your professional development. It’s also vital to develop an understanding of how to work in a team alongside other healthcare professionals. That’s why the course includes clinical practice, where you’ll work across a range of settings including midwife-led units, birth centres, labour suites, antenatal/postnatal wards, as well as in the community.

This course provides the opportunity to study either adult, child, learning disability or mental health nursing in a flexible way to fit study around work and life. Regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), with strong partnerships with National Health Service (NHS) Trusts, private and voluntary organisations, as well as teaching and support from experienced lecturers, practice supervisors and assessors, this course could be a great place for you to take the first steps towards making a huge difference to people’s everyday lives.

In our fully equipped simulated ward, you’ll have the opportunity to put what you’ve learnt into practice in a safe environment using our range of patient simulators. You’ll explore all aspects of nursing, from the fundamentals of providing care to more advanced topics such as complex needs and leadership and management. The course uses mainly digital technologies and also includes practical, hands-on experience. Although the theoretical component is predominantly delivered online, you’ll attend the campus in Huddersfield (or similar venue close to your home) for a maximum total of four one-week blocks for simulation and skills training. You’ll do this in each year of the course, providing the opportunity for you to practise skills in a safe and controlled environment.

Learning disability nursing involves supporting people from a range of backgrounds to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. They provide hands-on care as well as emotional and educational support in order to promote an individual’s independence. Learning disability nurses work in a number of settings including people’s homes, schools, respite units, hospitals and secure services. They work independently and in multidisciplinary teams, learning how to respond to the needs of someone with a learning disability.

You’ll learn and develop both practical and theoretical skills in order to achieve your full potential as a children’s nurse and meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) standards. You’ll get the chance to develop your practical skills in a safe environment in our fully-equipped simulated children’s ward using our patient simulators. Occupational therapists work collaboratively with people to help them engage in those activities (occupations) which they need or want to do, enabling them to lead fulfilling and healthy lives.

Mental health nursing involves working with people, carers and family members who experience the impact of mental health problems, typically when diagnoses such as psychosis, bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, and personality disorders are made. Our mental health nursing team will support you to develop the intellectual, personal and professional skills you need to practice in this challenging and rewarding field of healthcare. After successfully graduating from the course you’ll be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and work as a Registered Nurse in Mental Health.

Occupations are practical, meaningful and purposeful activities that allow people to develop a sense of identity for example self-care, work or leisure tasks. Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) work alongside surgeons, anaesthetists and other medical staff to provide care for patients at all stages of the surgical process.

Get ready to take your first steps on an exciting journey towards a career in Optometry. We’ll give you the opportunity to gain the knowledge and practical skills you’ll need to complete your professional training and become highly employable.

On this course you’ll explore what’s involved in the three interconnected aspects of the role: anaesthetic, surgical and post anaesthetic. You’ll have the opportunity to practise your skills in our simulated operating theatre, enabling you to experience the operating theatre environment.

Our three year course provides theoretical, practical and placement learning opportunities across a range of practice environments. Placements You’ll required to complete 450 hours of practice placement for the paramedic skills modules in each year of the course. Both ambulance and non-ambulance placements will be undertaken providing you with exposure to a comprehensive and diverse number of experiences. Ambulance placements may include the Emergency Operations Centres, NHS 111, and other specialist roles within the ambulance service. Non-ambulance placements may include working in hospital and community settings including Accident and Emergency, medical assessment units, critical care, care homes, hospices and labour/birthing ward, as well as in acute elderly care and mental health.

This undergraduate Master’s degree is designed to offer a varied learning experience and give you the chance to gain a strong foundation in pharmaceutical sciences. You’ll be able to combine studying science theory with developing your practical and professional skills, while focusing firmly on medicines and patients. As you progress, you’ll have the chance to work in our formulation laboratory, where medicines are made, and get to grips with aspects of the profession, from prescriptions and patients, the development and design of drugs and the role of Pharmacists in society.

Podiatrists are allied healthcare professionals who assess and treat the lower limb and foot. They work in a number of specialist areas with people of all ages including musculoskeletal podiatry, sports injuries, biomechanics and gait assessment, orthotics, wound care, tissue viability and nail surgery. Podiatrists contribute to improving quality of life for patients with diabetes, rheumatological, vascular or neurological disorders. Our course provides you with the opportunity to build the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need whilst learning in specialist clinical facilities. You’ll gain vital experience using our fully equipped onsite podiatry clinic, surgical theatre suite, biomechanics gait analysis equipment and orthotics laboratory.

This four-year integrated Master’s degree in social work is a professional qualifying course, designed to equip you with the necessary skills, abilities and knowledge to succeed in a future career in social work.

Speech and language therapists work alongside children and adults who have difficulties with speech, language, communication, feeding and/or swallowing. Through holistic assessment and management, speech and language therapists collaborate with the individual, their family and/or their carer to provide person-centred care that encompasses health, wellbeing, participation and quality of life. Speech and language therapists work with neonates, babies, infants, children, young people, the elderly and those who may require palliative care and/or are approaching the end of life.

The course is part of an accredited social work Teaching Partnership, managed and delivered by long-standing partnerships between the University and local social work agencies including statutory, voluntary and service user-led organisations, and aims to produce practitioners who can critically reflect on their practice. The partnership delivers innovative and creative approaches to social work education, ensuring social workers are confident and creative practitioners with the skills required for working in statutory social work. You’ll be introduced to anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice within a complex and multi-cultural society, and within the context of professional and agency standards and requirements.
