“Language is central to history: sources are made up of words, but the meanings of those words change over time. But language also has a history, which reflects relations of power between different people, different countries, at different moments. How did English emerge as a global language? Is it about empire? Or is there something about the language itself which has made it so adaptable?” Dr Lindsey Dodd, Admissions Tutor (History Pathways) For more detailed course information visit courses.hud.ac.uk

Global Professional Award

Film Studies and History BA(Hons)

Your course

Course info

Whether the emphasis is on silent, classical or more contemporary cinema, studying film always involves trying to make sense of continuity and change – complex processes that take place at the level of society, art, culture, technology and economics. The same is true of history, which teaches us about the connections, people, institutions and events that led to the society we now live in.

Course length: 3 years full-time 4 years inc. placement year

Our combined Film Studies and History degree gives you the opportunity to study two different but highly complementary subjects. We will encourage you to think critically about the ways in which our past and present have been narrated, represented and (re) constructed over the centuries. On our course you will also try your hand at researching and producing these stories yourself. You will apply your understanding of how our past shapes the present, of the role of film in creating the past, and the way our past shapes film today.

Example modules • Video and Audio Production • Hands on History: Voice, Film and Material Culture

• M ethods in Media, Communication and Journalism Research • History and Myth: Writing and Re-Writing the Middle Ages

Your future Not only do you get to study two subjects you love instead of one, but you will receive a thorough grounding in research methods, and digital research methods in particular. We also emphasise the importance of transferable skills, such as communication, analysis, argumentation, and problem solving – all vital skills that employers in a wide range of industries are looking for. A selection of organisations that have employed Huddersfield graduates in recent years include the Civil Service, the Royal Armouries Museum, the House of Commons, the British Red Cross and the British Library.* *LinkedIn

“This course is not just about watching films. We look at many other areas such as sociology, media, politics/ geo-politics, advertising, philosophy and business. I believe the variety of subjects that you cover throughout the three years opens up a wide number of job opportunities. Huddersfield has the friendliest atmosphere you will ever get within an academic environment and the staff are always friendly and very helpful.”

Entry requirements: BBC inc. B in History/DMM/112 inc. B at A Level in History

At Huddersfield we’re proud to inspire global professionals, which is why you’ll study the Global Professional Award alongside your undergraduate degree.* The Award is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (Level 5), meaning you’ll graduate with an additional internationally recognised qualification which will help to set you apart from other graduates, and develop valuable qualities that we know employers are looking for.

Three areas of focus The Careers and Employability focus of the course helps you understand your own aspirations and ambitions. You’ll learn how to turn these into a really powerful tool when it comes to getting a job after you graduate. Going to university can be a transformative experience, but it can also be a little scary. The Wellbeing focus of the course is about giving you the time and support to reflect and transform, from meeting and developing relationships with new people to mental strength and resilience. Through the Enterprise focus you’ll gain new viewpoints to consider and perhaps challenge your current perceptions of the world and how you can have an impact in the future.

Becoming a highly employable graduate Completing the Award will support you to transform into a highly employable graduate who is: • Self-motivated • Enterprising • Resilient

• Able to collaborate with others • A confident leader • Globally and socially aware

How do I complete the Award? We make it as simple as possible. You’ll complete the Award through a mixture of online and face to face workshops and self-directed learning activities. This will take approximately 1 hour per week, so you’ll still have plenty of time to focus on your degree and your social life. A key aspect of the Award is that each year you build a portfolio of experiential learning activities by engaging with opportunities within the University and the local community. You’ll be supported to complete the Award by staff who are specialists in the three areas of Careers and Employability, Wellbeing and Enterprise, plus the lecturers on your course and your PATs will help you to understand how you can get involved. Find out more about the Global Professional Award at hud.ac/gpa *Full-time, undergraduate first degrees with a minimum duration of three years. This does not include postgraduate, foundation, top-up, accelerated or apprenticeship degrees
