Computers enhance our quality of life and aim to meet the challenges that ongoing advances in technology create. This course explores a range of topics, such as, programming, software engineering, mathematics and mobile computers. We’ll look at the theory and the practical side of things to help you develop your abilities.
Computer Science BSc(Hons)
Your tutors will encourage you to identify tough problems, and then work out how to solve them through software. You might get involved in developing software solutions using the latest artificial intelligence techniques. Or perhaps you’ll look at how to use computer applications in engineering or scientific experiments. You’ll be taught through a combination of formal lectures, tutorial groups, practical laboratory work and seminars. The course is accredited by the British Computing Society (BCS) and gives you the chance to apply your skills in the real-world with an optional one-year placement.

Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence BSc(Hons)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming our everyday lives, from virtual assistants in our homes and workplaces, to self-driving cars. This course gives you the opportunity to combine a core computer science programme with knowledge and skills in modern AI technologies, it is designed to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to be at the forefront of this technological revolution, and will teach you how to build intelligent systems, which are in high demand across different industries.

We aim to provide you with the fundamental principles of computer science and the skills on which AI relies, as well as giving you the opportunity to specialise your knowledge around various AI themes, for example, robotics, knowledge graphs, and deep learning.

In your first year you will follow a core computer science programme aimed to give you a broad understanding. Then from your second year onwards you will take a number of specialist AI modules, covering symbolic, sub-symbolic and statistical AI and their applications in natural language processing, speech and image recognition. You also have the option to spend a year on placement. You’ll gain that all-important industry experience, broadening your horizons and your prospects.

Computer Science with Cyber Security BSc(Hons)

There are many reasons why cyber security is fast becoming one of the most hot topics in society today. The monetary value of data has led to an increase in cyber-crime, meaning computer professionals with cyber security knowledge and expertise are in high-demand. This course aims to prepare you for an exciting and impactful career in the industry.

Many aspects of cyber security rely on the fundamental principles of computer science, for example, designing secure software systems, implementing cryptographic techniques for secure data transfer, and auditing systems for vulnerabilities. On this course you will be taught both theoretical and practical aspects of computer science and cyber security. Many of the big challenges in the cyber security industry need the use of computer science and software engineering techniques to develop the next generation of security products. Your tutors will encourage you to tackle challenging problems, and particularly those at the forefront of research, to ensure you are in the best position to make a real impact in the sector. In Year 1 you will follow the core computer science programme to give you a broad understanding. Computer Science with Games Programming BSc(Hons)

Computer games development is an innovative and thriving industry in the UK. This course aims to help you develop and gain the core knowledge and skills to become a well equipped graduate for this exciting sector.
Course length: 3yrs full-time 4yrs inc. placement yr
Your course is built on the core topics of computer science and software engineering that apply across the computer games and general software industry. In addition, you will study both theoretical and applied topics underpinning the development of modern computer games.

These topics will progress from fundamental games programming techniques to developing various core game sub-systems and game production processes. Our game specialist topics will cover computational mathematics, game engine architecture, real-time computer graphics, advanced game development techniques and artificial intelligence. And to help develop your abilities and your team working, we’ll get you operating with other students to complete a computer games project. During your third year you have the opportunity to take a year-long placement. Thanks to our links with a range of employers, you could end up working for a big name. Previous students have taken placements with Sega Europe Ltd, Rebellion Studios, Rockstar Leeds and Red Kite. Or you could have the chance to take a placement at the University’s Canalside Studios, working as part of a team researching and developing games for a range of platforms. Our Enterprise Placement Year* scheme also affords you the chance to set up your own company (individually or in a group). You’ll have support from business advisors and a games industry mentor.

Computer Science with Internet of Things BSc(Hons)

Course info
What is the Internet of Things (IoT)? Simply put, it is the connectivity of any device to the internet, and to each other, via a network to share data to make processes easier. For example, it could be your alarm clock wakes you up and notifies your kettle to start boiling ready for your morning tea or coffee, or your printer knowing it is running out of ink and automatically re-ordering more. The IoT is going to completely revolutionise how we live and work.

In the workplace – especially in manufacturing digital technologies can improve the efficiency of logistic supply chains by tracking parts, helping to optimise production by collecting data on the operation of the shop-floor machinery. It can even prevent costly unexpected machine failures by predicting when machines are going to fail, so that maintenance can be scheduled when it will not impact production. On this course your tutors will encourage you to tackle challenging problems, and particularly those at the forefront of research, to ensure you are in the best position to make a real impact in the IoT sector. You’ll be supported in developing the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to recognise challenges that occur in IoT systems, and to provide solutions. In Years 1 and 2 you will follow the core computer science programme to give you a broad understanding of the underlying principles, with the project activities giving you the opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding of IoT systems.

Businesses are looking for graduates who have an in-depth knowledge of computing. They want people who know their way around information technologies (IT) – but they also want people who know about business. This course aims to help you develop your understanding of both disciplines and how they are interlinked, and to build up your skills for future employment.

To become a computing professional in a competitive and fast-paced environment, you need a range of skills and a good understanding of business, so we’ll look at both areas. We’ll give you the chance to design and develop computer systems and websites – and we’ll get you thinking about the issues that a business has to take into account when developing new information systems. We’ll look at finance systems, how user-friendly a system should be, and the strategic business needs of an organisation. You’ll spend most of your time studying in the School of Computing and Engineering, but some of your modules will be provided by our Business School too. This course aims to give you the knowledge and skills to help organisations identify their IT needs and then design, produce and operate computer-based information systems. During your studies we’ll give you the opportunity to gain a thorough grounding in the principles of IT, you’ll also study advanced skills in developing database-enabled applications. Our focus is on giving you the skills to perform in a graduate level information systems position, and prepare you for a career in this dynamic area of computing. You could also spend a year on placement, which could really help you develop your experience and your contacts.
Top-up Option If you have studied Information Technology for at least two years at university or higher education level, this course helps you build on your knowledge and skills to gain a degree. This one-year top-up course aims to give you the knowledge and skills you need to help organisations specify, design, implement, operate and exploit information systems. On the course we’ll give you the chance to work with software tools to develop information systems for people. It could help you develop your creativity and imagination as well as your technical competence.

Any subsequent changes to information will be published in the course information listings on our website courses. hud.ac.uk, and you should check this for the latest information before you apply. Changes to a course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment.
For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff ; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment.
Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year.
Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.
Major changes
Termination of course
We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.
In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.
