Your course This course will help you to gain the skills and knowledge you need for a future career working with offenders, victims, criminal and social justice organisations or advising organisations on the steps they can take to reduce crime.
You’ll study a wide spectrum of criminal behaviour and you’ll be encouraged to investigate why people commit crime, ways to reduce the crime rate, how to prevent people being victimised and assess the effect of organisations within the criminal justice system, such as the police and the crown prosecution service.
Another aspect of this course is the chance to hear from guest speakers such as police officers, drug outreach workers and criminal justice staff. You’ll be taught by tutors who have a wide range of research specialisms, many have worked in the criminal justice system or the voluntary sector.

Previous students have worked with youth offending teams, in prisons, police stations and courts, as well as in voluntary agencies supporting offenders and victims in the community. You could also have the opportunity to study abroad for a term in your second year, previous students have studied in America, Italy and Spain.

“I chose Huddersfield because the modules stood out over other universities. The course opened up a lot of avenues for me to gain confidence in my academic ability. The lecturers were interesting, genuine and honest people with real-life experience, which offered something that books and journals simply could not.”
