Your course Our Midwifery Studies degree is designed to help you become a competent, confident and autonomous practitioner with the knowledge and skills to pursue a successful career. Learning from experienced midwives and gaining real-world experience in a variety of healthcare settings will prepare you to make a difference in the lives of women and their families.
We know just how important it is for midwives to learn about midwifery in context, gain a broad perspective on the delivery of care and be supported by enthusiastic lecturers who know exactly what it’s like to be a midwife.
Across all areas of teaching, we focus on the promotion of normality, health and the safe management of pregnancy to ensure the best possible outcomes for parents and the newborn. We’ll also help you learn how to provide individualised care for the mother and baby throughout pregnancy, labour, childbirth and the early days of parenthood.
Placements Gaining clinical experience is key to your professional development. It’s also vital to develop an understanding of how to work in a team alongside other healthcare professionals. That’s why the course includes clinical practice, where you’ll work across a range of settings including midwife-led units, birth centres, labour suites, antenatal/postnatal wards, as well as in the community.
Your future
Our graduates have gone on to work as midwives within the National Health Service (NHS) in a variety of roles, including community and hospital-based midwifery.***

Your course Whether you’d like to provide care for adults in the community or an acute setting, this innovative nursing degree is designed to provide a great foundation for your future career.
Supported by a team who really understand what it’s like to be an adult nurse, you’ll learn through lectures, seminars, group work, simulation and role play. In our fully equipped simulated ward, you’ll have the opportunity to put what you’ve learnt into practice in a safe environment using our range of patient simulators.
You’ll explore all aspects of nursing, from the fundamentals of providing care to more advanced topics such as complex needs and leadership and management. You’ll develop a range of specialist skills including communication, team working, decision-making and upholding professional values, as well as practical and theoretical skills in order to help you achieve your full potential as an adult nurse and meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Standards.
Placements You’ll have the opportunity to put the skills and knowledge you’ve learnt into practice through clinical placements in a variety of healthcare environments. Your course From the very start of this course, you’ll get the chance to develop the vital skills, knowledge, values and confidence you need to care for children, young people and their families whatever their circumstances, including those with acute illness, long-term conditions or those who need help to maintain their health.
You’ll learn and develop both practical and theoretical skills in order to achieve your full potential as a children’s nurse and meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) standards. You’ll get the chance to develop your practical skills in a safe environment in our fully-equipped simulated children’s ward using our patient simulators.
After successfully completing the course you’ll be eligible to apply to register with the NMC and work as a Registered Nurse for Children. You’ll also learn how to respond to the physical, cognitive and mental health care needs of all patients and service users across their lifespan.

Your course Learning disability nursing involves supporting people from a range of backgrounds to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. They provide hands-on care as well as emotional and educational support in order to promote an individual’s independence. Learning disability nurses work in a number of settings including people’s homes, schools, respite units, hospitals and secure services. They work independently and in multidisciplinary teams, learning how to respond to the needs of someone with a learning disability.
You’ll have the opportunity to develop a high level of personal and technical skills to help improve the quality of life of people with a learning disability and their ability to live as independently as possible. You’ll also learn how to work in partnership with service users, their families, carers and other professionals to promote health and wellbeing.

Placements You’ll have the opportunity to complete your practice learning experiences in a diverse range of health and social care settings, reflecting the diversity of the services accessed by people with a learning disability. The career opportunities within learning disability nursing are constantly evolving and our graduates are now working as nurses in healthcare trusts, charities and short-term care providers.** After qualification there is an extensive range of training and career opportunities available, where you could provide person-centred support in specialist roles such as epilepsy, safeguarding, autism, behaviour, forensics, palliative care, mental health or complex needs. Other roles could include working as a manager, prescriber, educator, policy maker and consultant nurse.

Mental health nursing involves working with people suffering from various mental health conditions across the lifespan, and their families and carers, to offer help and support in dealing with the condition. This could include anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorders, psychosis and obsessive compulsive disorders.

This may include forensic services, assessment teams, in-patient treatment units, rehabilitation centres, community teams, respite services, crisis and home based treatment, liaison services, child and adolescent mental health services and prisons.

Our graduates have gone on to work in local healthcare trusts, private hospitals and in the community.** Other specialist career opportunities could include working in child and adolescent mental health services, forensic settings, substance misuse, accident and emergency liaison, self harm, criminal justice system, youth offending, management of violence and aggression, as well as specialist roles such as admiral nursing and nurse consultant.
