Course info

Whether the emphasis is on silent, classical or more contemporary cinema, studying film always involves trying to make sense of continuity and change – complex processes that take place at the level of society, art, culture, technology and economics. The same is true of history, which teaches us about the connections, people, institutions and events that led to the society we now live in.

Course length: 3yrs full-time 4yrs inc. placement yr Entry requirements: BBC inc. B in History/DMM/112 inc. B at A Level in History

Our combined Film Studies and History degree gives you the opportunity to study two different but highly complementary subjects. We will encourage you to think critically about the ways in which our past and present have been narrated, represented and (re) constructed over the centuries. On our course you will also try your hand at researching and producing these stories yourself. You will apply your understanding of how our past shapes the present, of the role of film in creating the past, and the way our past shapes film today.

Example modules • Video and Audio Production • Digital Victorians

• Methods in Media, Communication and Journalism Research • History and Myth: Writing and Re-Writing the Middle Ages

Your future Not only do you get to study two subjects you love instead of one, but you will receive a thorough grounding in research methods, and digital research methods in particular. We also emphasise the importance of transferable skills, such as communication, analysis, argumentation, and problem solving – all vital skills that employers in a wide range of industries are looking for. A selection of organisations that have employed Huddersfield graduates in recent years include the Civil Service, the Royal Armouries Museum, the House of Commons, the British Red Cross and the British Library.* *LinkedIn

“This course is not just about watching films. We look at many other areas such as sociology, media, politics/geopolitics, advertising, philosophy and business. I believe the variety of subjects that you cover throughout the three years opens up a wide number of job opportunities. Huddersfield has the friendliest atmosphere you will ever get within an academic environment and the staff are always friendly and very helpful.” Santa Nekrasova, Film Studies and History BA(Hons) For more detailed course information visit courses.hud.ac.uk
