Your course If you’re interested in society and you want to explore what makes people commit crimes, and how crime may be prevented, this course is a highly fascinating combination of sociology and criminology.
You’ll be taught by experts who have a range of research specialisms in both disciplines. You’ll learn from sociology tutors who specialise in areas such as gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, the body, nationalism and identity. Within criminology you’ll look at the causes of crime, disorder and theories about how to reduce crime, you’ll also benefit from tutors who have experience working with offenders, victims and crime-prevention agencies. On both aspects of the course, you’ll be able to choose topics and develop your understanding in areas that interest you.
You’ll also have the opportunity to go on a 30-hour work placement in your second year, giving you hands-on experience. You may also have the opportunity to study abroad for a term in your second year, previous students have studied in America, France and Italy.
