Get ready to take your first steps on an exciting journey towards a career in Optometry. We’ll give you the opportunity to gain the knowledge and practical skills you’ll need to complete your professional training and become highly employable.

Course length: 3 years full time

Course length: Year 0 of a 4-5 year degree

This course is aligned to the requirements of the General Optical Council (GOC) and as a new course, currently has provisional approval** from the General Optical Council www.optical.org

AAB* which should include two of the following Science subjects, Mathematics, Physics, Biology or Chemistry, plus a third A Level in another subject excluding General Studies/DDM in Applied Science or Health and Social Care combined with a Science A Level in Mathematics, Physics, Biology or Chemistry at a minimum grade B.

If you don’t have the appropriate qualifications for direct entry to one of our science based degrees, you can apply to our Science Extended Degree. Getting stuck into the four main disciplines of biology, chemistry, maths and physics, you’ll have the chance to get a grounding in the scientific knowledge you’ll need no matter which route you eventually decide to take.

As one of the UK’s newest Optometry departments, we are committed to offering you a learning experience that’s second-to-none, and small class sizes mean a personal approach to our teaching where you’ll be well supported to reach your goals. What’s more, in your final year, you’ll have the chance to gain real-world experience through placements in local hospital eye departments and seeing patients with a variety of ocular conditions in our purpose built, state-of-the-art University Eye Clinic here on campus.

Your future Optometry is a regulated profession requiring registration with and adherence to the General Optical Council (GOC) registration requirements. You can find out more about careers in Optometry on the College of Optometrists website www.college-optometrists.org and registration requirements from the GOC at www.optical.org As a graduate of this course you may work in corporate optometry, in private independent practice, where you can start your own business, in hospital optometry working with other ophthalmic colleagues or in research and teaching.

Entry requirements: A Levels/BTEC/UCAS points CCE/MMP/80 inc. entry test and interview.* *As part of the selection process applicants are normally required to complete an entry test and interview. **Progression onto Chemical Engineering BEng(Hons) is dependent on achieving a minimum pass mark of 60% in the Maths and Physics module. Progression onto Chemical Engineering MEng is also dependent on achieving a minimum pass mark of 60% in the Maths and Physics module, plus an overall pass mark of at least 70%. ***Progression onto Optometry BSc(Hons) and Pharmacy MPharm is dependent on meeting stringent performance levels in the Science Extended Degree. You must pass all modules with an overall pass mark of at least 70%. Plus at least 70% in the Chemistry in Action, and Math and Physics modules. You must also successfully undertake an interview with the Optometry or Pharmacy admissions staff.

Please note, many of the courses offered by the School of Applied Sciences are offered ‘with a research placement’. If you wish to progress on to a ‘with research placement’ degree, you’ll be required to achieve an overall pass of at least 50%.

Changes to a course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment. Changes to your course after you enrol as a student We will always try to deliver your course and other services as described. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below: Changes to option modules Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year. Major changes We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum. For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Now all you need to do is apply. necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. When to apply

If this is your first (undergraduate) degree and you want to study a full-time course, then you’ll apply via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) at ucas.com

If you want to start your course in September 2022, you can apply through UCAS any time from September 2021 onwards. Please make sure UCAS receives your application by the first application deadline in January 2022. Please see hud.ac/faa for more information.

If you’re at a college or school right now, it’s probably already registered with UCAS. The best thing to do is ask your teacher or careers adviser to help with your application. Once you’ve applied we’ll keep in touch with you throughout the application process, so you’re up to speed with what’s going on.

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.
